"Wh— I wasn’t—! I was, wasn’t I? I was doing it again."
“Damn.”
Nori's lips cracked into a smile, "I mean, I ain't goin' to blame you. I am a wonderful thing to stare at."
"Did ye' need somethin'?"
"Ain't polite to be starin', ye' know."
....
"Guess who's back from caravaning?"

His steps were slow, relishing in the company of an old friend. He didn’t miss the looks that followed after Nori, but found nothing but amusement in the acts. Glancing over his shoulder, Thorin chuckled softly. “I’ll have to look into it, I suppose. Any creature comforts are welcome when I have dozens of appeals and complaints a day.”
"Oh, aye. An' I know a terrific place to stea-- Er, buy 'em from." Nori looked vaguely sheepish for a moment but then it passed and he was smirking once more, "Dori has been askin' 'bout ye'. Worryin' like the ol' mother hen he is. Always tell him yer fine as a king can be." Though Nori was all but a Lord, he still often stole and even lived in Dale, outside the mountain. Stone had never agreed with him, "Ain't it ever get stuffy in here?"

"I'm packin' fer a caravan trip. Don't look at me like that. Ye' know I get restless."
Truth is, I didn’t expect to get this attached to you.

Everything was in shambles.
Metaphorically and literally speaking. Were he in a better mood, it might’ve been amusing to him, but there was nothing akin to that in the Miner’s head at this moment. No, instead his feet remained where they had been planted for what felt like the last half hour- in the precarious space between the doorway and the rest of their home, trying to find it in him to make the movement one way or another.
Saying his heart ached would be putting the situation lightly- no, it radiated well beyond his heart, through every vein and nerve and into the marrow of his bones…. everything in him reeled against itself, conflict and indicision down to the basest levels. Eyes cast downward to the scattered shards on the floor as his partner speaks, and a noncomittal noise is the only answer he can give. He didn’t know if he should be calling him by nicknames anymore. They were terms of endearment, weren’t they? Did that apply anymore?
"I’ve no idea," he finally comments, both in answer to the earlier question and the present. Exhaustion carries the words from him, tinged by his own wounds and harsher than he typically spoke. “‘Cause y’see I thought it was but—" he gestures what he is unable to say, dismissive shake of his hand going over the room. Had it not been enough for Nori to have told him, instead of keeping it to himself? Would he have ever known had none of this happened?
Did Nori trust him that little?
Blinking away the string of questions that he is not bitter enough to ask, Bofur’s hands thump briefly against his sides. There is no simple answer to this. It’s a sodding wreck and even his own optimism fails him.
"So, you tell me. Is it? "
After such a change, between he and Charade, he could feel the anger boiling just beneath the skin. Crawling and toxic, hissing words inside his head. Gritting his teeth, Nori tried to force the thoughts away. But he knew the whispers were right in this case. His... Condition has ruined everything. His home, his relationship, the trust his oldest friend had in him. Possibly beyond all conceivable repair.
Nori was ruined, and has ruined everything he touched.
It was wrong of him to hide Charade from Bofur, and vice versa he supposed. Both had a right to know about one another, but a wicked sort of cowardice kept his lips sealed. Stole the truth from his tongue, hiding it like a coveted treasure horde. Charade was his secret to keep, his burden to bear. No one needed to know, for who could know without something happening?
Nori looked at Bofur from across the room, eyes darkening, "If ye' don't know, then ye' do. Ain't no need fer nicknames then." Sorrow ached in him, radiating from his every pore. He had not meant for any of this to happen, though he knew it one day would. One day, Bofur would find out about his darker side. The monster that lurked in the darkest parts of his mind. And now that he had, Nori knew that was about to happen next.
"... I suppose it ain't then. Thought I could protect ye' from him, keep him away." Nori feels that anger bubble up again, forcing off the sorrow and fear, "I tried to keep him from ye' fer a good reason, if yer too dense to understand that! Charade is-- I am dangerous and now ye' know. See all o' this? I do this all the time. I murder an' I steal, an' I can't stop that. Ye' can't fix me. I love ye', but that ain't enough to keep him away."
Nori carded his fingers through his still loose hair, "I can't... We can't do this anymore. Charade has been 'round fer a hundred years, an' he'll be 'round 'til I finally die." He squared his shoulders back and looked evenly at his husband, the only person he ever truly loved, "Tell yer family I'm dead. Didn't come back after a caravan. They'll believe ye'. Perhaps it is better this way. Ye' don't need me, an' I sure as hell don't need ye'."
It was a goodbye, because Bofur deserved more than a hello from someone who could not stay.
