Talking about translation, I feel like Jun-ho's lines are losing a lot through it. I think it's because of his character. Young-woo talks in a very straightforward, literal way. Most of the regular characters are attorneys who speak in a very clear sentence without much nuance to be lost. But one of Jun-ho's distinguishing characteristic is that he is a kind person with VERY GOOD SOCIAL SKILLS.

He communicates with people in a very soft, gentle, and smooth manner. (By smooth I don't mean he confuses Young-woo. His choice of words and sentences is usually very thoughtful, and contain a lot of consideration) He leads small conversations, and when things go a little awkward he steps in and use his social skills as a lubricant and steps out right away, letting Young-woo do her work. (Just as in EP5 ATM company, and EP10 when Young-woo was talking to Ms. Shin)

This emphasizes his sincerity around Young-woo after he falls in love. He is a person who doesn't seem to struggle with communications, but with Young-woo, he is cautious and awkward. Also when MW or SY asks 'your feelings won't last long?' he blurts out his feelings, and that stands out because he doesn't usually talk in that blunt way.

Back on the track, even though KTO is delivering most of the tenderness with his acting, still the subtitle translations doesn't seem to fully capture Jun-ho's softness and smoothness. I mean they are not really wrong, but sometimes it's just too... literal. These little nuances that show he is good with conversations... are not really delivered through the subtitles.

Even in EP12, when he is talking about how he did not enjoy Young-woo's list of dates, he tries a lot to choose words that won't hurt Young-woo. (You could still see that through the acting-moments he hesitates during the conversation-, but it could be not seen because of the subtitles) After seeing a lot of reviews on tumblr worrying about their relationship and taking this conversation seriously, I felt bad about the subtitles not really capturing the nuance.

it feels very significant and important that eaw continuously shows not only junho meeting youngwoo’s needs and respecting her boundaries, but also him communicating his own needs and boundaries and her meeting/respecting them. because if he wasn’t doing that, it wouldn’t be a fair relationship. like yes, she has specific needs and he has to be okay with making maybe more compromises in the relationship, but the writers aren’t shying away from having him be upfront about things that hurt him (running away from him, not considering them official in that preview) or reminding her that his feelings also matter (can you ask if I also want to hang up, how about we set a time to talk about whales bc I’d also like to talk to you about other things). it would be easy to make him a one dimensional character who does nothing but care for her and doesn’t address his own feelings, but that’s not really how people or relationships are. he’s not just blindly accepting things he wouldn’t accept in a relationship with an allistic person, he’s treating her as a whole person who can and should learn from her mistakes. it’s not just sympathy, as his friend so eloquently suggested, it’s a relationship with participation from both sides.

i’m not autistic, so i can’t speak to how the show represents the experience, but i can speak as someone with relationships with autistic people. being willing and able to communicate your own needs and boundaries while respecting those of the other person is such a huge part of any kind of relationship, and I think that showing that communication and not treating youngwoo’s character as too fragile, cold, or unemotional to comprehend someone else’s experience is really rare and important in representations of autism. maybe you do have to explain things you as an allistic person would usually assume to be evident in the subtext (it feels disrespectful to call me just to get what you want and then hang up, it hurts my feelings when you run away from me, it helps me when you tell me stories about your experiences), but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. you’re just helping them connect with you in the same way they help you connect with them, by describing what they’re feeling.

anyway. i have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this show and no one to talk to them about. i’ll not write the full essay, but i feel like something this show is doing right is treating youngwoo’s character with enough respect to know that she is capable of being an active participant in her relationships.

Part of the vibe of Jun-ho I love so much is that not only does he get really offended and protective whenever someone talks shit about Young-woo or the idea of them dating, he also is like ???? I'm confused why wouldn’t I date her??? She's amazing??? He legit thinks she's just the coolest cutest best person and he enjoys her existence so much like a cat that's obsessed with watching a fish tank. He just doesn't get why people can't see how amazing she is and why he would want nothing more than to have as much of her attention as he can steal from lawyering and whales

Backstory from KTO's interviews

Jun-ho is from a well-to-do family and his parents are both attorneys. He especially admired his mother, and tried to be a lawyer but didn't make it. Even though it was his dream, Jun-ho doesn't have any sense of inferiority or complex watching all the attorneys around him while working as a law firm employee.

That's why KTO thought Jun-ho is a really nice person and would fall for a girl whom he can admire and respect, and then Young-woo came into his life. She did what he could not, and this newbie attorney comes up with a brilliant idea that no one could. And the wedding dress scene was a spark.

In EP3, Jun-ho counts with Young-woo when she goes into Atty Jung's office. That was KTO's improvisation. He thought because Young-woo has a routine or a habit like that, Jun-ho would also be used to that.

In EP2, Jun-ho clinks his glass with Young-woo's when she can't do it with the others. That was also a scene made by KTO. He said it's easy to notice things like that when you're interested in someone, so he did it, then the director decided to do a close-up at his hands.

KTO's favorite scene is the sunset scene in EP4. He likes how Jun-ho says "I want an attorney like you to be on my side." not "I'll be on your side."

Jun-ho always carrying a backpack = also KTO's idea. Jun-ho is a litigation staff who supports attorneys, so he thought it would be necessary for Jun-ho to carry all the materials.
