Lynda.com
I used Lynda.com to look at a range of tutorials again. In addition, I made notes on how they were useful well as what we had learnt from them. Overall, I thought Lynda.com was a great resource to gain relevant information from as they are straightforward and simple to understand.
I did some independent research for the DryPoint workshop and really liked the work by Keeley Rose. She works with clean lines and colour. Her process involves using plastic Perspex sheets to create the linear images, then using a rainbow roll effect over the top to produce the multi colour. What makes her work unique is the use of vibrant colours as they portray the city in different ways. She is interested in the structure of the city itself, street, shops and local 'hang outs' rather than the landscape and coastal scenery.
Printmaking Workshop- DryPoint Etching
This form of printing is an intaglio technique (printmaking process involving making incisions or indents in a plate) which is usually done on copper plates as the softer metal lends itself to this technique.
Chris Keegan is a screen printing artist that I did some research on. The second image is made up of three colour layers depicting trees, branches and leaves.The inspiration for the prints comes from wondering through a forest, looking up and seeing the changing patterns and shapes as the different types of trees overlap and intersect with each other.The colours are added to highlight the layers and add extra contrast. Chris keegan’s work also reminds me of the famous ‘drip painting’ artist Jackson Pollock due to the use of colours and the abstract feel of his work.
Printmaking workshop- Screen Printing
The next workshop was screen printing, also known as silk-screen. I learnt 3 different techniques to do with this workshop. One of them consisted of converting an image to a bitmap as the photo emulsion only picks up 100% block colour when you print it. Therefore, this allows us to still have tone and gradient within the print. The second technique involved, ‘coating and exposing the screen’ which involved the photo emulsion picking up the image and placing it onto the screen. Finally, I learnt how to print the image onto paper by using a squeegee at a 45° angle to spread the ink over the screen.
Paul Peter Piech- Exhibition
Paul Peter Piech is another creative practitioner who is known for his own quirky style. of lino cutting. In addition, I visited the People’s History Museum to observe his work in detail and took some pictures of his work. One of the things I admire about Piech’s work is how he varies the thickness of his lines to express the emotion of the image. The vibrant colours and distinct features of the images create a sense of originality.
At the workshop, our tutor introduced us to some lino cutting artists, so I decided to do some independent research for inspiration. Grafica Mazatl creates unique work through the use of line, the level of detail and especially the way that he can fluidly describe areas of light and dark are incredible. His work seeks to have a voice that promotes political, social and environmental justice which highlights the issues in his native part of the world that need to be taken into consideration more. I like how his work is not restricted to a particular scale and creates a sense of belonging through the symbolism of his work.
Two Coloured Lino Print
To take this process a step further I decided to create a two coloured lino print. I used another linoleum material and picked the hair of my self portrait to be the focus of this experimentation. I used blue ink this time to distinguish between the two colours and followed the same method as the previous print.
The ink was rolled onto the linoleum and then placed onto the press bed with the registration sheet. I placed another sheet of paper on top which was going to get printed on. The pressure of the press bed was adjusted to ensure that the print transferred accordingly. I found that the amount of ink I placed onto the linoleum produced a range of vague and darker prints. If I was to do this again, I would increase the scale of the linoleum so that I can work with more space rather than being restricted to work within such small space. I would also spend more time experimenting with different chisels to create different marks.
I traced around a flipped image of myself using chunky shapes rather than small detailed outlines as it would be difficult to carve such details into this material. I then placed the tracing paper onto the linoleum and traced it again so that the markings of the pencil would transfer onto it. After that, I used a curved chisel to cut out the parts of the linoleum material that I did not want to print. Then I placed my print onto a piece of paper and drew around the edges to create a template which helped me keep the linoleum in the same place when making multiple prints.
Printmaking Workshop- Reduction Lino
The reduction lino is a method of block printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block. In addition, the lino surface is carved into with a sharp knife or chisel to create a design. The raised areas of the linoneum which have not been carved represents a mirror image of the parts to be printed. The lino sheet is then covered with ink using a roller and then embossed into paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press.
Conclusion for Web Design and Film Making
Overall, the aim of self promotion was achieved through individual research of creative practitioners which helped me gain insight into what characteristics were common for all self promotion design websites. I have learnt the basics of programmes such as After Effects and the different processes involved to make a successful website. I am happy with the final outcome of my website however, I felt abit rushed throughout the sessions and would have preferred it if there was longer time spent on the sessions.
Final Website
Through getting feedback for my first draft of my website, I decided to change it in some ways. For instance, I changed the colour of my type from blue to black so that it is easier to read. Also, I put my gallery of work into a neat layout rather than having big/small images everywhere. Overall, I am pleased with the final outcome of the website as I think it fulfils the objectives of this module.
Final Stop Motion Video
My final film clip was made in After Effects which helped me structure the combination of indvidual images into moving motion. I found making this film clip difficult compared to creating the website due to barely having experience in After Effects or Animation. After I finished the film clip, I rendered the animation, therefore I could upload the film on any social platform including my Wix webpage. One thing I would chnage to improve this video would be to use a different medium such as biro as I found the ink was not as suitable to draw details and I was not happy with the final outcome of the portrait.
Development of images using After Effects
Using after effects, I put my scanned images of my portrait to create the final film. I adjusted the timing of the film clip to ensure the duration of the film clip fitted with the portrait. I found this process the most difficult as I do not have much experience using after effects.
Development
As the aim for this motion graphics is to self promote, I have chosen to illustrate a portrait. In addition, illustration and working with different mediums is something that I enjoy doing and would like to work more with in the future.
Research
Through my research I have found ways I can film this project such as stop motion graphics and zoetrope. I like this animated drawing of a figure walking in to the corridor as it is based on the interpretation of the individual. Marcus Neiman uses watercolour paints, and combines stop motion animation techniques with motion graphics. I like how the watercolours tell a story and make the film clip look like a 3D world.
