He knew the older man had been a little hurt when he hadn’t come straight back to Redning Falls when he’d been discharged from the VA Hospital, but he also knew his father would give him the space he needed to come around. But they would have to talk eventually. It was a conversation he kept putting off. Sy felt like he’d failed everyone, especially his dad, who he still idolized just as much now as he had when he was a kid.

Clearing the land himself was cathartic in a way. Every tree that fell took him further from the chaos of war, away from the desperation of a thirst that could never be quenched and closer to mentally being home. Closer to finding himself again. Every log he added to the pile was a plea for forgiveness to those he’d lost. Needing to keep his hands busy, something inside of him was telling him to build this cabin, that he needed to do it with his bare hands as a kind of penance. A monument to them and the ultimate sacrifice his men had made that had resulted from his decisions.

Thwack.

Thwack.

Lost in memories he couldn’t quite leave behind, he stripped the branches methodically from the fallen tree. Hefting the log onto his shoulder, he placed it on the growing pile that would be the walls of his new home. Heading back to the trees, he selected his next mark. Raising his ax, he said a silent entreaty to whoever or whatever would be willing to listen to him, having the same conversation with some imaginary diety that he’d had a thousand times over in the last ten months since he’d stepped back onto the soil of his homeland.

Did I really do the best I could have? Made the only decisions I could have with the information I had at hand? What did I miss? Did I not notice something I should have? It doesn’t matter. It wasn’t enough. I failed them. I should have died with them. Instead of them.

Please.

He swung hard at the tree.

Thwack.

Please. Send me a sign.

Halting his next swing mid air, Sy tilted his head, his ears straining in the silence following his last strike.

I’m hearing things now. Great.

Sighing, Sy geared up for one final swing that would fell the large oak tree. Then he heard it again. The softest, gentle moo, just barely louder than the breeze that ruffled through the leaves. Glancing around, he didn’t see anything.

Maybe the wind is carrying the noise from the farm. I thought it would be quieter here in the valley.

The clearing was only a ten minute walk from his fathers dairy farm, but this wasn’t the low of a fully grown cow and none of the farm's cows had any calves at the moment.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw something brown moving through the brush at a glacial pace. Slowly, with unsure steps, a small, emaciated calf came wobbling out of the thicket. Letting out a soft moo, she stopped and eyed Sy.

We’ll I’ll be damned. This is my sign? A fucking cow? Poor thing is wasting away.

Crouching down, he held his hand out to her, gently murmuring “Now where on earth did you come from, Sweet Girl? I know you’re not one of ours. Come on over here, I won’t hurt you.”

Still eyeing him warily, the little calf raised her head in a way that reminded him of a queen, surveying one of her subjects.

“Is that it? Are you a Queen Bee, baby? Come on over, your majesty. I swear, I’m a nice guy.”

Slowly making her way over towards him, stopping just out of his reach, Sy got a better look at the poor thing. She was skin and bones, probably only a month or two old. Reaching into the chest pocket of his flannel, he pulled out the granola bar he’d been saving for his walk back to the farm later. Unwrapping it, he held it out to her, dropping it at her feet when she wouldn't take it from his hand.

“How long you been wandering around out here, Queen Bee? You’re so brave. That’s right, eat, baby.” He cooed at her as she took dainty bites of the granola until it was all gone. “I know you’ve had a really hard time. It must have been so scary out here all by yourself. But you’re safe now, darlin’. I’ll take care you now, if you’ll let me?”

Finally she stepped close enough for her head to rest against his outstretched hand, and as she leaned against him, he could feel the tension leaving both their bodies. She was giving in and allowing herself to trust him, and he felt like he had found someone that needed him to still be here.

Is this my reason? A cow? She needed someone… and I hadn’t been here…

Flopping down into his lap, she curled up into a little ball and let out a long sigh as he ran his hand over her bony back. After a few minutes of letting her get comfortable with him, he pulled her into his arms and stood. “Come on, Sweet Baby. Let’s go get you fixed up.”

As he walked the well worn path back to the farm, he looked down at the half asleep calf, amazed at her sudden appearance. Shaking his head, he spoke quietly her.

“I don’t know who sent you to me, but I think they just saved both of us, Baby. What do you think of Baby as a name? I had a dog named Baby once.” She let out a irritated moo in response. “Is that so? Dont like a secondhand name? Hmm. What should I call you then?”

The calf raised her head, that regal eye watching him closely. “Queen Bee? Eh. There’s already a Queenie in the herd. Bee? Could call you Bee. Or what about Bea, with an A like Beatrice?”

Snuggling her head back down onto his shoulder, she let out a low moo.

“Beatrice? You like that? Bea?” He smiled. “Bea. That’s it.”

He knew it was wrong.

You shouldn't invade a person's privacy, especially if said person were merely an innocent civilian enjoying a night out with her lady friends.

But doing things you shouldn't was part of who August Walker was and he was too stubborn to change his ways. So that's why he had found himself lurking in the shadows of a cocktail bar and now, a nightclub. The ‘Revival’ club wasn't as bad as he had anticipated, it was 90s night and the club had been invaded by thirty-somethings, like himself, looking to relive their youth. With, as a gentleman at the bar had said, ‘songs that were actually in tune’.

He wasn't wrong.

Although, August wasn't completely convinced Britany’s ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ could ever be described as ‘in tune’.

He had been at the bar for fifteen minutes before he had spotted her; his maid. The reason he had braved the dank world of nightclubs. She was sitting at a table up in a raised section of the venue. She, along with three other women, kept coming and going from their table. Alternating between, dancing and drinking cocktails. He could tell they were cocktails from the little umbrellas attached to random pieces of fruit.

In the almost three hours he had been watching ‘The Help’ with her friends she had drunk five drinks, this was her third cocktail and she'd had two green coloured shots.

A barman reaches their table with what looks like another tray of shots. He points over to the other side of the bar to where August was standing and points to a group of men in their late twenties and the women shout and wave their thanks and down the red coloured liquid.

The ladies then get up and make their way down the stairs to the dance floor and start to dance to a song August was familiar with from his youth, a dance track. He had no clue who the singer was, but the heavy dance beat and the tune he was familiar with.

He watched as lights hit the dance floor, covering the object of his spying in a technicolour of fluorescent colours.

Her hips swayed to the beat and August could see the outline of her buttocks, covered in the flimsy material of her dress. His eyes roamed higher to her pert breasts. They weren’t the largest but the way they bopped up and down as she moved made August’s cock twitch in his pants.

The lyrics of the song made her all the more tempting. The description of electrifying touches and desire echoed his own feelings and the more she moved the harder the urge to touch her and the harder his cock became.

As the beat of the chorus got faster so did the movement of her hips and the more attention she and her friends were gaining from the men in the room. August sees the men who had paid for the three women's shots start to approach.

The sound of the music and the beat seem to somehow get louder and the ever-moving lights confuse his eyes, making it harder to follow the interaction. The spotlight falls onto her and he sees one of the mystery men’s hands on her lower back and August snaps.

He strides out of the shadows and prowls the short distance, finding himself in front of the man and his maid in seconds. The music pounds through his ears feeling louder now that he was at the heart of the dancefloor, adding to his anger.

“She’s mine.” He says in a growl placing a hand on the man's shoulder.

The guy tries to shrug his hand off him but August squeezes. The younger man swallows and removes his hands from August’s lover’s hips and cleverly walks away not saying a word.

“What the fuck August!” his maid screams over the music, shoving him in the chest.

Unnerved by her reaction August takes hold of her bicep and tugs her away from the centre of the dance floor and backs her up against a wall in the semi-dark of the room.

Maybe the song that was blaring through the sound system was right… There was something about the way they touched, even the simplest of gestures, the electrifying feeling he got when his hand touched her arm, ignited something in him.

An urge to claim her raged through his soul and he lifted his bulky arms placing one on either side of her head, making her back into the wall of the club.

She looks at him, confusion and lust in her orbs.

He leans in so their noses are touching.

“Aug...”

August doesn't let her finish.

“Mine.” He says with authority, his lips crashing into hers in a fierce kiss.
