I am begging people who still say “Manifest Destiny” for any reason to understand that it means, very literally and without exaggeration, “White Power”

Like it isn’t an inspirational quote. It’s not just something you can say to mean you’re following your dreams. Manifest Destiny is a phrase created and used to mean that God gave the earth to White people and all other races exist to serve them.

Manifest Destiny was the chant that said “God says White people should rule over other races, so I’m doing what He wants”. To say that when a White person displaces or enslaves a person of a different race, they are MANIFESTING the DESTINY laid out by their God. Manifest Destiny is a philosophy and an order to others to “take what’s yours”.

And yeah, I know a lot of you don’t mean that when you say it. But you wouldn’t yell “white power” after winning a chess game. You wouldn’t brand a light-wash laundry bleach as “white power ultra”. Do You Get What I Am Telling You

And since I know Tumblr can be more of an art crowd than a history crowd, let’s analyze this painting that is kinda the symbol of the ideas around manifest destiny that they use in the article.

Some things worth noting:

The woman in the center is Columbia, the personification of the US. Notice how she’s holding a wire connected to telegraph poles. She’s also holding a schoolbook for the time.

Notice how the Native people and the wildlife are grouped together, shadowed in darkness. See how industry and technology are contrasted against the Native people, as if those two are mutually exclusive.

Notice the skin tones of the settlers and the Native people. Now notice their clothing. I find it particularly interesting that the indigenous woman on the left is completely shirtless, while the fabric on Columbia’s dress (reminiscent of Ancient Greek clothing, likely a reference to the origin of democracy) is pulled upwards unnaturally to cover her breasts.

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

And here's the whole series. I'm kinda proud of myself - when they all put together I can see the amount of work - and I love my characters a lot. :) Now, I wonder, which one is your favorite? My personal favorite is 2nd - I think I did Lyra justice with those wings. Since this is gonna be a long post anyway, I'm gonna add a few sketches for some of them below.

Last one was an alternative variant for the 10th piece but I imagined that people would misinterpret it BAD so I decided to draw another one. I still like this sketch, however, maybe I'll finish it with lineart or sth like that. And another sketch also had Devil in it but since this piece was more focused on emptiness, I just erased him. Well now you know he was there. And about the knife... now you know who did that, too. After holidays I want to update my lore post a bit so stay tuned for that :]

Just saw a post for The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish that someone had tagged SVSSS because they'd mixed up Ye Qinghuan and Yue Qingyuan.

Is this an understandable mix up? Absolutely. Their names are literally two letters off.

Is it hilarious to imagine Yue Qingyuan suddenly in the fish romantic comedy? Oh very much so.

Nicolas Cage is an incredible actor who is very bad with money so he has to act in terrible movies because otherwise they will repossess his dinosaur skull collection.

But even when he is in terrible movies with terrible writing he refuses to phone in his performances. And sometimes when you are acting your ass off while saying some of the dumbest dialogue ever conceived it can give the appearance the acting is the issue rather than the writing and story.

Hayden Christensen knows that feeling all too well.

So next time you see Nic Cage in a B movie acting a fool, just know he probably bought some new shrunken heads and forgot to pay the mortgage on his volcano island.

Nicholas Cage is kind of a test of a director's mettle, because if he is allowed free reign, he will run and run and never come back and trample right over every part of the movie. He's one of those guys with a huge personality and many directors tend to either be caught up in Nic's ideas for his role, or unable to muster a push back on them. Really good directors know how to let him have the leeway to blow up the screen, and when to reign his excesses. That's when you end up with something like Mandy or Vampire's Kiss or Raising Arizona or Wild at Heart. He is always set to maximum, and it turns out that's a great litmus test for directing.

The true problem with being an artist and drawing all day (as I wanted my whole life) is that human backs are not designed to hold that position, so it is very common for artists and designers to have really stiff shoulder blades, creating a chain of muscle strain towards the arm AND the back… and a lot of pain.

These are some physical exercises for artists and honestly anyone who works at a desk.

really not a fan of entire (mostly black) music genres being compressed and confined to being seen as "video game" music to be totally honest

acid jazz isn't acid jazz anymore, it's persona 5 music. new jack swing is just sonic cd music. jungle is the latest victim of this and is being relabeled as "ps1/n64" music even when the genre exists well beyond the confines of a couple dozen games from that period. and it sucks because the composers/artists who worked on these songs obviously adore those genres and where they come from. it's not their fault. but it just makes me sad seeing these genres effectively being whitewashed by people with zero interest in learning about their origins

For those who want to learn about which genres were used in different video game soundtracks, I'd recommend using RateYour Music. Tools for browsing genres via spotify really suck because it categorises them by shared listeners, while on RYM it's done by user consensus.

Here's what it has for Persona 5 and Sonic CD, as an example. It does still include that they're VGM, but there's a lot more detail about the genres used.

People really sleep on how good Shen Yuan is at acting.

At this point in the series, Shen Yuan has been coerced into returning with Binghe and practically locked up. In his mind he thinks telling his captor "I don't want to see you" is the cruelest thing he's ever said in either life, because he dotes on Luo Binghe that much.

Multiple times in the series, he describes Luo Binghe's distress making him feel physical pain. This is a man who carried an unconscious Binghe around the Holy Mausoleum while two other heavenly demons chased him and he didn't have access to cultivation at the time!!! Actual nightmare. There is nothing Shen Yuan won't do for the sake of Binghe's happiness and safety.

And for that whole arc?? Binghe thought his shizun hated him!!

Because Shen Yuan is a poser! He says so multiple times! He acts like an aloof and untouchable peak lord, and he's really good at it. He's good enough to make people think that's who he really is, even if his inner thoughts are the exact opposite.

The way he tries so hard to pretend he's an unfeeling and selfish scum villain is almost as tragic as the fact that he's talented enough to make people think it's true.
