EDIT : PART 2
(sorry for grammar mistakes, as always)
I really love that when Aang reveals that he learned energybending from a lion turtle/Ancient Being Toph’s reaction is basically “lol, classic twinkle toes!”
Katara learned a firebending technique from Zuko
Recently I did a rewatch of the Avatar series (it’s been years since I watched it!) and I noticed something during the fight between Katara and Azula.
Katara did something I’ve never seen a waterbender do throughout the series, at least, not to my memory. After freezing herself and Azula in ice, she then liquified the water around herself using just her breath.
I recall waterbenders changing the state of water’s matter, whether into fog, liquid, or frozen, but they did it with their hands or feet. When Katara returns the ice into a liquid state, I don’t think she’s heating the water- she’s just doing something that’s shown to be a skill waterbenders already have. The unique aspect is how she uses her breath to execute it.
At the beginning of the series, Iroh explains to Zuko during a training lesson where fire is produced in the body.
Power in firebending comes from the breath. Not the muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body. The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire.
Essentially what I’m getting at is Katara picked up that technique from Zuko- controlling the water with her breath. I saw a post somewhere that suggested benders learn techniques from other benders and incorporate those styles into their own element. Iroh himself learned from the waterbenders, so I think it’s fitting that Katara would learn from a firebender.

Sokka wasn’t a bender but he was always ready to throw them mf hands and that mf boomerang. You have no choice but to stan.
“You must never give in to despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.”
Other things that would have made Avatar even more catered to my personal interests interesting:
Different languages.
The Water Tribes fundamentally speak the same language but because of the division they speak different dialects and sometimes they misunderstand each other terrifically. Also a lot of nuances of the Southern dialects probably got lost after it was attacked and the men left.
The Air Nomads (you know, being Nomads and all about harmony) try to teach their novices as many languages as possible and with Aang being the Avatar and bringing peace that would be very symbolic if he can communicate with (almost) everyone.
But we also know he speaks a lot of slang and stuff from 100 years ago (like he tried in the Fire Nation) so he would probably make a lot of out-dated jokes
he probably also isn’t fluent in all four languages since he’s so young and gets in trouble because he misunderstands stuff
Since the Earth Kingdom seems to consist of many smaller kingdoms and provinces which live very separate from each other, they probably have a lot of different languages and 1 lingua franca that not everyone speaks.
Their minority languages are commonly used in the resistance against the Fire Nation, because the Fire Nation soldiers cannot keep track of that.
Jet speaks like 6 languages but the lingua franca only in fragments.
The Fire Nation (consisting of various islands) probably also has several languages but being dictatorship focused on cultural purity, minority languages are probably suppressed and even the main-language is altered and adapted to fit the Fire Lords’ propaganda and policies.
Also probably with a lot of military terms and idioms because that happens in a lot of military dictatorships - and a lot of words for all the technological stuff they have that started to seep into other languages.
Sokka and Katara mainly speak the Water Tribe language, but Katara picked up some Earth Kingdom language(s) when speaking to merchants (there have to be merchants, why else would they have wood at the South Pole)
Sokka, considering his interest in becoming a soldier and fighting the Fire Nation, probably learnt some Fire Nation language but he just knows very specific terms from written (probably military) sources he got his hands on and has no basics of the informal language.
Toph learnt to speak in a very sophisticated manner at home, but tries to sound like she’s a street-kid and its the weirdest and most hilarious mix ever
Zuko grew up speaking the standard Fire Nation language in a very sophisticated way as well as the Earth Kingdom lingua franca, but probably also either knows only outdated or no slang at all and is very awkward when trying to sound informal (isn’t he always awkward).
After his exile, he started learning the Air Nomad language because he’s looking for the Avatar (but he probably has only really old and really obscure literature to do that, since the Fire Nation doesn’t publish Air Nomad literature because they’d disagree with their propaganda) him and Aang very often either doesn’t understand him or has a hard time and pretends to get what he’s saying
No one knows exactly how many languages Iroh does speak, but he kinda just finds a way to communicate with every person he meets, even if its charade or a weird mixture of various languages
Aang: Surprise, motherfucker.
Katara: Supplies, motherfucker.
Sokka: Some fries, motherfucker.
Suki: Disguise, motherfucker.
Toph: Wrong size, motherfucker.
Zuko: First prize, motherfucker.
Iroh: Some pies, motherfucker.
Ozai: All rise, motherfucker.
Ty Lee: Heart eyes, motherfucker.
Dai Li: Jet dies, motherfucker.
I just realized…
This is from the ATLA episode where the gang goes to watch a play about themselves while on Ember Island. I’ve watched this series a dozen times, and I always thought Zuko and Sokka were talking about Jet’s supposed death in the play.
But…
They’re actually poking fun at the show itself, because it was never 100% clear whether or not Jet died under Lake Laogai. The only clue we get is Toph saying that Jet is lying, and we never see Jet again. But we also don’t see Longshot or Smellerbee. So were they all killed by the Dai Li? I need to know.
yall remember the ember island players episode when zuko was watching jet’s death and he just went like “did jet just. die.” thats literally the first time he hears back about what the fuck happened to jet after the dai li took him he just learned that jet died
why are german science classes in school called “sachkunde” that is such a fucking hilarious word. Knowledge of Things.

One of the more interesting things to come out of the data on COVID from other countries is that those with higher testing rates, like South Korea, are showing a very different picture of infection rates by age than those, like Italy, who are only testing people with clear symptoms. (Note, these are from a medium article, but it pretty well sourced):
In Italy, which so far has a very high mortality rate (around 7%), and where they have so far only tested people with symptoms, the infection rates by age group compared to their percentage of the population looks like this:
In South Korea, which so far has a mortality rate below 1% of all confirmed cases, and where they’ve been doing far more widespread testing, including people without symptoms, the infection rates by age group compared to their percentage of the population looks like this:
The lower relative death rate reported in SK is at least partly the result of doing far more tests. So far SK has done almost 250,000 COVID tests, the highest of any country outside China, which means approximately 5% of their total population has been tested. Italy is next, at 86,000 tests, but has a population slightly higher than SK, so their testing rate works out to 1.4%. But the more significant takeaway is that by doing more tests, SK is identifying more cases that are either asymptomatic, or that are mild, and these are the ones most likely to occur in younger, healthier people. The fact that almost 30% of their cases are in people in their 20s, means that there are a lot of asymptomatic or low-symptomatic but contagious young adults there, and likely in other countries too, and that they are actually more likely to have contracted COVID than other groups. There are some other possible confounding factors (e.g. it might be that people in their 20s in SK are being tested at an unusually high rate compared to other groups, etc.) that we don’t know, but it’s still a very striking finding. Only people in their 50s have infection rates that somewhat exceed their percentage of the population, and the difference is far less pronounced.
Anyway, my point is, if you’re in your 20s and currently disregarding advice for “social distancing” based on the fact that you think you’re unlikely to have COVID, you might be doing a lot more harm than you think.
Ok but like... I’m still waiting for that Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog crossover with TGWDLM. I can imagine this.
