Here’s a Stranger Things modern music taste headcannon that no one asked for!
Will: Mostly listens to Boy Genius, the Clash and the Cure (obviously). Huge fan of Smashing Pumpkins. Listened to MCR only when Mike was really into them, but lost his mind when they did a cover of “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” with Billie Corgan.
El/Jane: She’d definitely adore the pop girlies of modern day. I feel Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter would be her favorites. Her goto albums are Lover and Short ‘n Sweet. Her, Lucas and Max will go on drives screaming pop music at the top of their lungs. Hopper surprised her with tickets to the Eras tour for her birthday.
Dustin: Claims he listens to everything, but also hates emo music with a passion (no one really knows why). Has a love for show tunes because of Suzie, and was a top .01% Living Tombstone fan for three consecutive years. He gets weezered by Max every 5 - 10 business days. Secretly pissed when Jane didn’t drag him to the Eras Tour, and complained to Steve for about a week.
Lucas: I think that Lucas would be the one that truly listens to everything. His playlist is whiplash to everyone (except Max) because it goes from Megan Thee Stallion to Green Day. He knows every word too. Absolutely adored Chromakopia when it came out, and was also a little upset when Jane didn’t bring him to the Eras Tour, but he’s glad she had a great time.
Mike: Mostly listens to Charlie XCX and Billie Eillish. Despised Chappell Roan when “Good Luck, Babe” came out bc it hit too close to home. Definitely had an emo phase in middle to early high school, and dragged the party to the Long Live The Black Parade Tour as a result. Will and Lucas didn’t really mind, Dustin complained the entire time though. (“Why did they play I’m Not Okay and not Cubicles!?!?” “Because no one knows that song Michael!”)
Max: Based on her love of Kate Bush in the show, I feel she’d like artists like The Crane Wives, Olivia Rodrigo, and Pheobe Bridgers. Was the one Jane dragged to the Eras Tour. Really liked Man’s Best Friend, but refuses to tell Jane that.
Nancy: Huge boy band/girl group fan. Her favorites are Big Time Rush and the Pussycat Dolls, but still respects the classics like Backstreet Boys. Grieved the One Direction breakup. She told Mike about Joe Jonas leaking the MCR reunion, he didn’t believe her.
Robin: Simultaneously a huge fan of both K-pop and Rock music. LOVES Straykids. Nerds out with Will about Smashing Pumpkins. Adores Katseye and has the fattest crush on Lara. Saw them live and Steve had to stop her from fainting.
Jonathan: Really only listens to punk rock bands from the 2000s, but still has a love for the Clash like in the show. Was the one that got Will into Smashing Pumpkins in the first place. Developed an appreciation for the Jonas Brothers after taking Nancy to see them over the summer.
Steve: Mostly listened to rap and pop music in high school. Robin forced him to expand his taste. He’s now evolved to listening to artists like Noah Kahn. Will never admit it, but is a huge Lady Gaga fan, and was fighting for his life in the TicketMaster cue for the Mayhem Ball. Also very invested in the Drake vs. Kendrick beef.
Erica: HUGE K-pop fan. Twice is her favorite and forces Lucas to learn the dances with her. BEGGED her brother to take her to the Katseye concert and was shocked when he knew “Internet Girl” while she didn’t. Lucas once picked her up while blasting Dolly Parton’s entire discography, she proceeded to side-eye him the entire ride home.
