The three-day learning journey organised by @themusiqueloft and @natstudio_1985 received a standing ovation with a concluding concert at the @salasudasirisobha performed by all the aspiring pianists. It’s heartwarming to see how like-minded children get to know each other to a deeper level, building friendships, support and cheer one another at each practice and performance. It’s not just about the goal, but the process, the determination, and the joy that come with it. I asked my son, “shouldn’t the song be played a little slower?” , and he said “I want to play it fast… “. “Sure, but when it’s too fast, it may go out of control…” , but then I restrained myself from talking too much of what I believe… because I am supporting a child to his fullest potential, not creating a product to fit into a mould. He is a spirited child; so am thankful to Ms Shann from @thepianogardensg for choosing music that suits his character, otherwise, he loses interests in music because of the need to intentionally practise. At the end of the day, the music therapist in me constantly reflect, and ask “what is the function of music in his life?”. Only if. This is based on my personal understanding and observations in children’s natural musical development . It is a bit different from how we teach children to play an instrument though, perhaps it’s because it involves more than our innate musical abilities, and that certain level of musical aptitude is diminished due to the lack of musical exposure when a child is ready for formal instrumental instruction. Time to submit CPD points. Did You Know that Australian trained music therapists are required to clock hours for continuing professional development (CPD) to upkeep our skills and be updated with the latest research every year? We need to provide evidence for CPD in three out of four categories to renew our certification. It may sound super cool to be a music therapist but there is SSSSOOOO MUCH to be involved. This was printed by my 2 year old student using his fists. In music therapy, children are not limited by their disabilities. Rather, they and their families are often shown and reminded of their potentials. In this little activity, we introduced the colour of the paints using the scarves, brushing the child’s hands with paints to provide tactile sensory experiences, stamping the fists onto the white areas for visual satisfactions. The songs I used? 1. What’s the colour? 2. Icky sticky icky sticky bubble gum 3.
