i've always wondered what human speech would look like visually in the POV of eridians in the same way eridian speech is written as music notes in the book and my favorite version of it i've seen in fics is when words are written as phonetics in rocky's POV :-) oh and also that one post about rocky and grace figuring out random words they can say in the other's language

grace couldn't teach rocky any english swear words because he knew if he did his life would be full of shit like "grace being bitch because no coffee yet, question?" and he'd have to live with knowing it was his fault

its on Erid, long after Grace and Rocky figure out how to hug and snuggle. Eridians dont really do full hugs like humans because then you can hear everyone's internal organs that close so its a little weird, maybe tapping/hand holding is the usual affection. Everyone assumes the constant cuddling is purely for Grace's human needs benefit, and while Grace obviously does love and need the touch, Rocky being driven to space madness and having every form of ptsd means he is equal if not more in need of constant full body hugs because he likes feeling how alive Grace is.

So random Eridian scientists are talking to Grace and are like, absolutely no disrespect intended, but very interesting Rocky overcame the cultural weirdness and sensory disgust of "hugs" and does them despite no benefit to himself because he cares for your needs! Its sweet!

Grace: actually Rocky freaks out if he cant press himself against my lungs and heart through the thinnest xenonite possible until he can hear every muscle cell in my body moving at least once a day.

Scientist: ok cool so hes kind of a total pervert then okay

still loving how simple and yet effective the framing of stratts and graces first meeting is. she comes in and is already elevated into a higher position (figuratively and literally) because hes sitting and has to physically look up at her. then they stand across from each other and talk like equals. then she chases him down (figuratively and literally) and the shots get tighter and more and more claustrophobic as she (and then carl) close in on him and the trap snaps shut. and obviously the vans pulling up and cutting off all the exit points - because she's only "asking" to be cordial. the same way she's "asking" for his help in their final scenes together.

Something interesting I realized on my last re-watch is this is also one of the two scenes where we see Grace tipping towards the "fight" part of the "flight or fight" reaction during the Earth flashbacks. His default is almost always "flight".

He starts to get snappy when he talks about his paper, after Stratt has walk-chased him. "I don't know why that makes me such a nut!" His expression and tone are both sharp.

Then, the vehicles pull up. He's been trapped in a corner, with no exit, and he starts very subtly to claw back. Eventually, something gives. His backbone, a bit? The very real astrophage threat? "The sun's really dying, isn't it?" "Yeah."

It's their first meeting. Grace, Stratt, and Carl.

We see this again, in Stratt's office at the end, when security and the doctor enters. "Sit down and we'll do this differently!" He panics.

He throws a chair. He raises his voice. He's ready to fight. Then, he sees the door, an opening, and he defaults again into flight.

This is their last meeting. Grace, Stratt, and Carl.

The bookends are immaculate. Ryland Grace, flight expert, has to go to space to learn to be brave ... in order to fight ... and he does it in part by learning to fly.
