안녕하세요 ____! This is super cool. I've been more interested in international affairs recently, so I wonder what he thinks of the US having wartime command over the SK military. They've been trying to switch it back for a few years now. You should check out the K-Drama D.P. or the movie Good News if you haven't, they're really good!

안녕하세요 ___! Milkis is definitely an acquired taste, when I first tried it, I couldn’t decide if I liked it until it was almost gone lol. Also, I thought it was for hangovers because it was mentioned in an interview between RM and SUGA called 슈취타. But it’s not, I misremembered. It *is* used for making So-Milk cocktails though, you might want to try it!

안녕하세요 ____! I've never had 요뽀끼 (?) or 젤리 before. Your post inspired me to check out a short article on Korean packaging. Fun fact: the Binggrae banana milk packaging (not the box) is pear-shaped to resemble traditional moon jars! It's interesting thought that I've only seen the box shape in the places they sell it in ____.

Reflection on Council on Foreign Relations article about the declaration of martial law in S.Korea in 2024.
I read an article called “Separation of Powers Defeats Imperial Presidency” in South Korea earlier in the semester. It’s about the previous President Yoon who declared martial law in S.Korea in 2024. I didn’t know much about what happened and was wondering what that meant compared to the US. Apparently, our gov’t can’t declare martial law to the same extent that can be done in S.Korea. In 2024, President Yoon declared martial law claiming the opposition party that leads the National Assembly (like a unicameral Congress w/ a liberal majority at the time) was a threat to the ROK though there was no threat of war which is required to declare it since 1987. It was interesting to see that in the process of impeachment we have similar questions of bipartisanship and if there will be some sort of boycott in sessions.Also there are 9 constitutional justices like our nine 9 in S.Korea but only 8 decided he’d be impeached due to a vacancy. So for impeachment the judicial branch oversees what the legislative branch presents which is a contrast to the US where the House votes for impeachment and the Senate holds the trial (impeachment is entirely up to the legislative rather than judicial branch).What was awesome is that the impeachment was unanimous where as for P. Trump’s impeachment trial for insurrection was 57:43 and then he was acquitted. Another similar thing was that a small fraction of law makers (190) were from the President's party (18) (300 in total but only 190 could make it to the floor) that voted to invalidate martial law. What was also cool was seeing protest culture in S.Korea (a super iconic thing as that an Assembly member jumped a fence to evade the police and get inside the National Assembly building) though it wasn’t clear the scale of its impact on the end of the boycott in the legislative branch. Learning about the democratic culture of S.Korea was very cool.
Reflection on some grammar/speech things I noticed in a Chuu Can Do It vlog.
Formal, informal and casual language is more complicated than I think I initially understood. I noticed when I watch vlogs or sometimes in dramas, there is a mixture of 반말 and 존대말 which in my mind shouldn’t happen so I wrote down some lines from a vlog to try and track what is said in 반말 vs. 존대말.
Turns out, what I’m noticing isn’t entirely 반말. Using endings like -다 and -네 are often used to make an observation or exclamation so using them kind of bends the rules. But it is still described to be a form of 반말 by Hyuno from TTMIK.
In the first minute of the vlog I was watching and writing down, now I could catch that they weren’t expressing closeness as much as I thought they were. The younger person in the video actually only uses textbook 반말 once to say “당연하교 (as written in subtitles)” of course. I thought the younger person and the older friend were using full on 반말 freely.
I also noticed Chuu in particular sometimes does not finish her sentences and I thought that was 반말 but it technically isn’t. For example, she says “드레스 입으라고…(as written in subtitles)” to express like “eh I don’t know (about the choice Yves made to wear a dress to a casual gathering)”.
Back to mixing 반말 and 존대말, it is an obvious sign that two people are close or one is older than the other, yes. But adding in 반말 when you’re mostly using 요 adds a layer of letting someone else know you feel closer or want to. It is also an observation by Hyuno from TTMIK that mixing the two is more common amongst women than men especially the use of -다 and -네 to make exclaimations in his experience.
Another fun fact is mixing like 나…입니다 can happen in like Presidential speeches and is in the pledge of allegiance but otherwise shouldn’t and don’t happen. This is according to Billy who runs Go!Billy Korean.
A second thing I wanted to know more about is elongated lengthening. Chuu does this a lot when she doesn’t finish a thought or sentence; Yves does it as well but it sounds like she’s thinking and usually finishes the sentence.
The words mostly lengthened are adverbs and adjectives to intensify them according to a Korean language Youtuber Your Korean Saem. The sources I read and listened to never mentioned connectors being elongated specifically buuut I can understand why it’s being done.
In another video comparing the dialects of 4 Korean women (Busan, Seoul, Jeollado, & Jeju), I noticed Chuu’s intonation sounds most similar to the Seoul dialect but the elongating sounds she uses reminds me of how SUGA of BTS talks sometimes which is Gyungsando. This was from a video by Dave’s World.
I now have more questions than answers and I can’t seem to find a source that explains it all cleanly. Haha.
But essentially I learned that some verb endings or just sentence endings occupy a unique place in terms of formality. I should also pay closer attention when I’m casually watching things that are in Korean so I can make better observations later. Also the ending -니까 isn’t 반말, I didn’t know that! I assumed anything without 요 or 입니다 was casual.
Also, the video I was watching is this one (link). Chuu is entertaining and I like how expressive her Korean is! I hope to be that expressive eventually.
Reflection on first episode of a K-Drama called D.P.
I watched the first episode of a drama called “D.P.” . I chose this drama because it’s about the military and I’ve never watched a K-drama involving characters actively experiencing enlistment and service. The plot is about a new recruit who gets assigned to catch deserters. It was a stressful watching experience; almost every scene was dark, though it was occasionally funny.
I like the main character and I was excited to see the actor Hong Kyung make an appearance. The only thing I didn’t like was the music chosen for some of the emotional moments. But when I think about it, the show might be too intense without it and probably unbearable to be honest.
I also really enjoyed the color grading. It felt like watching a movie rather than a TV show, which I’m realizing now is probably a universal practice for thriller/dark TV shows. Like Barry’s (HBO show) last season is basically 7 movies and Breaking Bad does a similar thing as the seasons progress. Also, other K-dramas like As You Stood By, Somebody, and Juvenile Justice use the same technique but it’s cinematic for every episode.
I recognized a few vocabulary words which was exciting. I also learned a few new words: 민간인 (civilian), 구인이 (soldier), 심심하다 (to be bored)! I also remembered I could use a thesaurus and not just the dictionary for words. Didn’t cross my mind for some reason just because I’m not using English. Just thought that blip was kind of funny enough to share.
I enjoy vague dialogue/meaning. I don't like it when the movie has a lot of explanatory exposition.
I like heavy/emotional subject matter in films/TV. They tend to make me think more (idk how true this is).
That's all I can think of right now. Just thinking when I get the opportunity to talk about TV in Korean what sorts of things I'd focus on.
I went to a gathering recently where friends were focusing on the actors, their resumes, costume design and the actors attractiveness. I think of these things as well but not for The Fifth Element, particularly haha. Though, I do like the movie.
