Einsteinâs Brain   (âŠand the neuroscientist who studied it)
Marian Diamond began her graduate work in 1948 and was the first female student in the department of anatomy at UC Berkeley. Â The first thing she was asked to do when she got there was sew a cover for a large magnifying machine (?!?!?!?!).
"They didnât know what to do with me because they werenât used to having a woman. They thought I was there to get a husband. I was there to learn."
Such challenges were not uncommon. Years later she requested tissue samples of Albert Einsteinâs brain from a pathologist in Missouri. He didnât trust her.
"He wasnât sure that I was a scientist. This is one thing that you have to face being a woman. Â He didnât think that I should be the one to be looking at Einsteinâs brain."
Marian persisted for three years, calling him once every six months, and received four blocks of the physicistâs brain tissue (about the size of a sugar cube). Â
Her research found that Einstein had twice as many glial cells as normal males â the discovery caused an international sensation as well as scientific criticism. Â
What are glial cells? Â Previously, scientists believe that neurons were responsible for thinking and glial cells were support cells in the brain. Â Now Researchers believe the glial cells play a critical role in brain development, learning, memory, aging and disease.

âRyoji Tanakaâs photographs may look like alien landscapes, but they are very much of this world. The organometallic chemist at Sagami Chemical Research Institute in Kanagawa, Japan, snaps pictures of everything from iodine to silver using a system of Nikon digital SLR cameras with macro and ultra macro lenses.

Breathtaking Drawings of Greenlandâs Changing Arctic Landscapes
Chasing the Light is an art expedition led by artist Zaria Forman that draws inspiration from breathtaking geography to create equally striking art. The project began in August 2012 when Forman sought to fulfill her late mother Renaâs wish to take an Arctic voyage similar to the one American painter William Bradford took in 1869. In fact, it was Formanâs mother, a painter herself, who originally conceived of the artistic journey.
Forman kept her promise and traveled up the northwest coast of Greenland, documenting the spectacular views through her pastel drawings. Besides carrying out a vow she made to her mother, the artist also sees the expedition as a way of âdocumenting the rapidly changing arctic landscape.â Her mission is to creatively record the effects of climate change on these awe-inspiring landscapes.
The artist says, âMy hope is that these drawings bring awareness, and invite viewers to share the urgency in a hopeful and meaningful way. Art can facilitate a deeper understanding of any crisis, helping us find meaning and optimism in shifting landscapes.â As a continuation of her work addressing climate change, Forman is currently in the Maldives for the month. She explains, âAs the lowest-lying country in the world, the Maldives will likely be the first nation submerged by rising seas.â
Part of the proceeds from the sale of Formanâs Greenland 2012 drawings go to 350, an organization dedicated to solving the global climate crisis.
Lifelong Love of Science
The fact that one can have a life-long love affair with science, and spend endless years studying any and all fields but still realize that you know so little when focusing on the big picture of things is astounding to me, and is what personally keeps me going on this infinite quest for knowledge.Â
