Zero Dark Thirty was originally about the unsuccessful decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden. The screenplay was completely re-written after bin Laden was killed.

Will Smith, Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Terrence Howard, Michael K. Williams, and Tyrese Gibson were all considered for the role of Django in Django Unchained. In one scene, in Sherlock Jr., at a train station, Buster Keaton was hanging off of a tube connected to a water basin. The water poured out and washed him on to the track, fracturing his neck nearly to the point of breaking it. This footage appears in the released film. Keaton suffered from blinding migraines for years after making this movie and was unaware of the reason, until a doctor diagnosed him in the 1930s.

John Singleton's Oscar nomination for Best Director for Boyz N The Hood made him, at the age of 24, the youngest director to ever receive the accolade, beating Orson Welles by two years. That yer Singleton was also the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director.
