The next moment, he was ascending in the sky, the screams of terror receding, a warmth enveloping him. Suddenly, he was surrounded by a familiar scent. Suddenly, he was sitting. Suddenly, Wei Wuxian felt something spark under his skin. Something he hadn’t felt in a long time. It tried to slide through him but there was already enough clawing at him from the inside. Wei Wuxian felt like he couldn’t breathe, like the air he was breathing wasn’t reaching all the way to his core. Just like the spark that was trying to fight its way into him. “Wei Ying…” he could hear a whisper. Just like he had heard once when he was trapped in the Burial Mounds. “Wei Ying…” the voice urged him to come back, it said something about needing him to come back. “Please, Wei Ying…you’re my zhiji…” the voice turned shaky and broken. His zhiji. Wei Wuxian wasn’t sure if he was awake or asleep, unconscious or dead, aware or hallucinating, in control or unraveling. “Get lost…” Wei Wuxian’s voice came out gravelly and hoarse.

Lan Wangji whimpered as the silencing spell smothered his words. His vision was blurred as the tears welled up endlessly. He blinked them away and let them flow freely if only to be able to see Wei Wuxian properly. He was distraught, he wanted to stop what was happening, he wanted to free Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian didn’t deserve any of this. But Lan Wangji’s body was weak and he could barely hold himself up, the whip marks still fresh and raw, the blood still not completely dried. All he could do was watch helplessly as Wei Wuxian remained kneeling, something he had done often when he was in Yunshen Buzhichu back when everything was simpler. Yet now, it was different, it was unfair, it was humiliating, it was without reason. Then again, all his punishments had always been without reason. “Yiling Laozu…” one of the Lan elders prepared his guqin strings, the notes meant to subdue and inquire, “...where is the yin hu fu?” Wei Wuxian remained silent, his gaze lowered, his fists clenched by his sides, his aura red and black and murderous. “Yiling Laozu…” the other elders joined the strumming and released another blast of inquiry simultaneously, this one more powerful and potent, “where is the yin hu fu?” “I DESTROYED IT!!!” Wei Wuxian roared; everything in the room rattled, the air trembled, his energy shaking everyone to their core.

Wei Wuxian’s eyes narrowed on Jin Guangyao as Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen conversed in low voices. He could sense resentment in him, he recognized the texture, he knew the stench. Wei Wuxian’s fist clenched as Jin Guangyao strummed a whisper of a tune as if he was simply cleaning the strings or playing around with them. Suddenly, he felt a spike in his heart, a sharp, painful ache tearing through it. Wei Wuxian gripped his chest as his eyes widened, feeling like he would burst into flames at any moment. His entire life flashed before his eyes in fragments and shards – his parents, the Jiang clan, Jiang Cheng, his shijie, the Wen remnants, A-Yuan, Lan Zhan. “Lan Zhan…” Wei Wuxian screwed his eyes shut and whispered, breathing heavily now. He could almost taste Jin Guangyao’s bitter resentment in his mouth. The quiet chords were making his skin crawl, his scalp itched, his nails dug deeper and deeper into his chest. And then he felt it again – that faint wisp of resentment that was like something he knew once, the taste familiar, the shape well known. Wei Wuxian’s eyes snapped open and he snarled as he summoned the energy with all his might, his fury pulling the weak strand from the faraway distance and yanking it towards him with another loud growl. Before he knew what was happening, the wall behind him exploded open and a figure burst through. The sounds of rattling chains and raspy breaths were all they could hear when the boom settled. Wei Wuxian’s eyes blazed with red sparks, his body reinvigorated as it fed from the new well of energy and power. When the dust settled, Wei Wuxian was standing on his own feet, still inside the array, and the figure stood just outside the array, looking the same and yet, not.

Shen Qingqiu gasped and wiped the water from his face before blinking quickly. When his vision cleared, he saw a very familiar face in front of him; a very familiar and very annoyed face.

Lazing around while Lu Guang does all the work!” She snapped as she glanced over her shoulder at the white-haired boy who was going through the account book to tally the week’s business. “The studio has closed and it’s Friday,” Cheng Xiaoshi put down his phone and looked at her pointedly. “So technically, you’re not my boss right now,” he smirked as he stood up and towered over her smugly. “You!” Qiao Ling punched him in the chest before spinning around and walking to Lu Guang, ignoring the exaggerated theatrics of Cheng Xiaoshi as he clutched his chest. “Qiao Ling-jie,” Lu Guang greeted her simply, closing the thick book and putting it back in its place under the counter. “I can’t believe you’re the younger one, Guang-Guang!” Qiao Ling rolled her eyes before smiling at Lu Guang sweetly. “Pffft!” Cheng Xiaoshi cackled and joined her at the counter, leaning forward and gazing at Lu Guang cheekily. “Guang-Guang!” He cooed and reached out for the boy’s cheek with one finger. “Idiot,” Lu Guang caught Cheng Xiaoshi’s finger before it could poke his cheek, his expression still impassive and unfazed, long used to his friend slash business partner slash roommate’s antics. “Actually,” Qiao Ling ignored Cheng Xiaoshi and went on, “Shanshan had a request…maybe a potential client,” she pulled out her phone and opened the chat with her college friend. “Dong Yi and her are trying to help their grad school friends…these two guys…” she scrolled up the chat, “I forget their name…but one of them confided in Shanshan about his crush on the other guy and thinks he-”

She watched silently, utterly intrigued by the odd trio, and tried to gauge their relationship. Both men were too handsome to be regular village folk. While the blue-robed man was unquestionably from a large, well-to-do, reputable clan, the man with the red ribbon had a very imposing aura and an extraordinary presence.
