Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows… compassion.
I don’t have anyone, but you. You’re all I have too, you know.
cash mercer as iron man
I shouldn’t be alive unless it was for a reason.
Jameson “Cash” Mercer || 35 years old || Werewolf || FC: Robert Downey Jr.
Traits
(+) Humorous, Intelligent, Courageous (-) Narcissistic, Non-committal, Self-centered
Personality
Cash claims he isn’t a complicated guy, and in all honesty it seems that way. For the most part he’s a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy. Completely easy going, Cash doesn’t take much, including himself, seriously. He tends to speak whats on his mind and rarely ever stops to think about the consequences of his words, much less his actions. Being a werewolf is only used as further encouragement from Cash to continue to push his limits, as well as the limits of others.
Behind the narcissistic behavior, self loathing and bottle of whiskey, Cash is actually a good guy. He has a tendency to concentrate more on his flaws and honestly believes he has no redeeming qualities…and he’s perfectly okay with that. It still isn’t enough to stop him from fully enjoying his life anyway he sees fit.
Biography
The Mercer family were one of the first supernatural families to settle in Oxford and have remained a part of the towns history ever since. Unfortunately, Jameson “Cash” Mercer has taken it upon himself to single-handedly outshine his ancestors. The only child of Edward and Katherine Mercer, James was destined to follow in his prestigious families footsteps. Unfortunately, life began throwing curve balls at James at a rather young age. Katherine passed away just days after giving birth to her son due to complications, ultimately straining the father-son bond before it even started. After that, growing up in the Mercer household was by no means normal, especially when Edward was so devoted to his work. As a child Cash was often left in the care of one of his many nannys, or would befriend the staff of the large Mercer estate. It wasn’t until he befriended Emily Waites, his next door neighbor, that life finally gave him a break.
From that moment one, the pair were practically inseparable. Cash had managed to become an unofficial member of the Waites family, often spending holidays with them and even going on their family vacations. The Waites managed to provide some sort of stability for a couple of years…and then James got older. The older he got, the more aware he became of just how screwed up his family life, among other things, were. A bright student, Cash began falling behind in school and began prioritizing in the wrong things. Having more freedom than any teenager should took its toll, especially when Cash began drinking and using drugs at only fifteen years old. The one thing that kept Cash from completely going over the edge was Emily. Despite the countless changes and reckless behavior, Emily remained the one good thing in Cashs life. And then he had to go and ruin it.
At just seventeen, Emily and Cash became parents. Scared beyond belief and completely unprepared to be a father, James stood by Emilys side the entire time. They ultimately agreed to give the baby up for adoption, even though James secretly believed they had it in them to be great parents. But they were just kids, and Emily, in particular, had a bright future ahead of her. Nine months of ups and down, arguments and constantly being reminded that he was no good for her, James and Emily welcomed a baby girl, Annalise. To this day, giving up his daughter has been the hardest thing James has ever done. Breaking up with Emily, being the second.
Not too long after Annalise was born, Emily and Cash called it quits. The entire situation was an eye opener, and Cash realized he couldn’t be responsible for holding Emily back. Finally getting the opportunity for an escape, Cash left Oxford to attend Stanford, with hopes of eventually getting into their Law program, figuring it was best to put as much distance as possible between himself and his old life, which just so happened to include Emily. Too add to the heap of the mess his life had become, Cash was in his sophomore year of college when he got word that his father had passed away. The news shook Cash more than he was willing to admit, even if he’d never had a healthy relationship with his father. After that, Cash more or less fell off the face of the planet, cutting all connections he had with his Oxford friends.
The rest of his college years went by as a blur, Cash actually dedicating time to his studies while managing to have a very outrageous social life. Then finally, six years later, Cash returned to Oxford. It was almost like he’d never left, especially after hearing that Emily has been recently hired at the local museum (which Cash later bought). For the past couple of years Cash has been alternating between spending his time in New York and Oxford, trying his best to make sure a supernatural war doesn’t break out, all while juggling his career, getting wasted with Belfronts, and most importantly, not falling in love with Emily…again.
