She leaned against the counter as she watched him move before her, tenderness in her eyes despite his disapproval.

“I’m not finished fighting you yet,” said James with a small smile. “I’m taking a break. You’re a lot of work.”
He drained his glass. “Tell me about the job. You’ll be handler to some muppet in the London office? What if there’s trouble with this agent? Does your job have arbitration?” He chuckled at his own joke, before turning serious again. “Does the agent get to know where you live, and all that?”

“Stop. You know I don’t care whether you want to be home or working. You know that. Don’t try to turn this into something it’s not.”
James sighed, giving in to her question.
“Martin is haemorrhaging money and won’t listen to me, so I don’t know why the fuck I’m his CFO if whatever I say is bloody meaningless. I’ll probably leave him sort it out himself.” He leaned forward for more champagne.
“When would you go back.”

“I wouldn’t put it past them,” James muttered. “I thought once you were out, you’d be happy. Haven’t you been happy? What’ve the last five years been for you, house arrest? There are a million other jobs, Enora.”
He took a breath against his rising anger. “Look, I don’t want to fight. I’m tired; it’s been a shit day. I am happy that you’re happy. It’s nice to be wanted. Just not by them.”

“Hey, don’t be like that,” she pulled him close. “Be happy for me.”
“Oh yeah, sure. Please go back to working for creepy murderers. Not at all an issue.”
He tilted her chin up, running a thumb along her frown. “Bring the smile back. You want a job? Then get a job. You want to go on a trip? We’ll go on a trip. No deaths necessary.”
With a shrug, he took another sip of champagne. “I have no idea why you’d want to work there, Eno.”

“I have good news,” she ran her tongue wickedly across her teeth as she smiled. “It seems like I’ll be getting back to work at last.”

“The ICA e-mailed me to tell me a position was available in London again,” she winked at him. “No more housewife for you.”
“You’re joking, right?”
James set the glass on the table, pushing it away. “That’s what this is? And you’re happy about it? Jesus, Enora. You escaped.”
With a grunt, he went back to pulling off his tie. “It’s been what, five years? C’mon. They took their time. Long enough that I thought we were done with them.”
He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “Email them back. Say no.”

It was around 4 pm when she finally heard the good news.
Five years of unemployment and it was over now, she could already see herself jump on a frantic shopping spree without guilt twisting her stomach. Énora had never, in a thousand years, seen herself as a stay at home wife but the conditions the ICA had presented her ages ago with were impossible to meet at the time. She would never leave her husband’ side, regardless of her pride and independence. They had been through too much.
But years later, her gauntlet had finally passed and tonight, she would greet her James with some average delivery food and a whole lot of champagne. Standing in the kitchen, she spoiled herself with the first glass of bubbly delight as she awaited her husband to come back home.
Things were about to changes at last.

James pulled into the driveway with his fingers clenched around the steering wheel. It had been a frustrating day at work, and he was around a 7 on the 10-point scale Rose once devised to measure just how pissed off he was about something.
Stepping into the kitchen, he pulled at his tie before the sight made him stop dead.
Champagne. Celebrating? Celebrating what? Oh crap. Her birthday? No. What anniversary was it? Not wedding. Valentine’s Day? No, that’s February.
James flashed Enora a winning smile before raising a glass. “Happy dfghjye...” He let the sentence trail off as he took a gulp of champagne.

The kind of masculinity this is advocating doesn’t help *anyone.* What is Morgan looking for here? Carry the baby in your arms, which is tiring and means you’re not going to be able to carry them as long? Push them in a stroller? Which means you need to take a big-ass stroller everywhere and you don’t share warmth and can’t just glance down to check on them? Make sure it’s only mom carrying the baby, so that dad doesn’t have the same bond and relationship with his children, leaving him isolated and the kids distant from a source of support?
Men. Guys. My dudes.
You deserve parental leave. You deserve to have have changing tables in the restroom. You deserve to be able to take time off work to pick up your kid from school when they’re sick or to leave work early to go to their school play. You deserve to walk down the goddamned street carrying your infant child, a tiny person whose entire life depends on you, without getting shamed or laughed at.
You deserve to be cuddled and to cuddle people you love.
And the fact that this jackass is implying otherwise is revolting and I’m so sorry you have to deal with this bullshit.

Christmas Gathering
The Burnwood estate was twinkling beautifully for Christmas. Tasteful lights adorned the trees in the driveway, while a huge Christmas tree could be seen sparkling from a downstairs bay window.
James pulled up outside the door with four children in tow, and a headache. The journey over had not been easy, with Charles and Evie complaining the whole way. Rose - now doing her best to appear grown up - joined in whenever James tried to cheer them, whereas Sally was more concerned about Santa knowing where to bring their presents this year.
“Diana and Emershan better be here already, I’m not in the mood to deal with Mum alone.” James thrust Charles onto Enora once out of the car, before taking the bags out. Rose and Sally dashed to the front of the house, ringing the doorbell maniacally as Evie ran after them.
“My darlings!” Nancy opened the door almost immediately, clearly delighted to see her grandchildren. “Come in, come in - it’s cold! Run along into the front room, there are treats waiting for you.”

Inside the house, Emershan had been sitting down for nearly an hour, watching Emma be amazed by the Christmas tree, pulling each decoration to take a better look at them.
“Honey, can you grab Emma?” He asked his wife, interrupting the small talk she was having with Henry. “She’ll tip the tree over her.”
Diana picked Emma up, handing her a soft ornament to look at before she could complain. “Just look, love. It’s to look at.”
Olivier was playing with toys near the fireplace, trying to get Henry’s attention as he spoke to Emershan over a glass of port. The room soon erupted with noise as Sally and Rose came running through, followed by James, Evie, Enora, Charles and finally, Nancy.
“Full house! Just like when you were all babies,” she beamed. “Enora dear, how are you? Would you care for a drink? Tell me, how’s work?”
“Work is as always, repetitive,” she quickly dodged the question, exchanging a look with her husband. “The house looks nice, so warm and yeah, I could use a drink, the road to here was a challenging to say the least.”
“Henry, get the girl a drink,” admonished Nancy, before ushering Enora to a chair. “And tell me, dear, what’s all this about Singapore? James says you’re to be shipped off for a while? What sort of nonsense, really - a terrible shame.”

The man threw one quick glance around, seeing for himself the opening before he pushed the group forward.
“One of the last time I came down these stairs, my upper lip was open and blood was pouring.” Emershan leaned over his wife’s ear. “Your ex was right behind me, looking like an angry lost puppy as the entire room witnessed the scene. The drama of it all.”
He chuckled, shaking his head as they swiftly ran upstairs, leaving the busy crowd to continue the night as if they had never been there to begin with.
“I remember.” Diana rolled her eyes with a grin, slipping her hand into her husband’s. “You decided I was worth it.”
James and Enora followed behind them, James visibly impressed by the beauty of the house. “It was just you living here, Emershan? Lot of space for one guy. They give this much room to all the department heads? It’s like your company doesn’t know how to spend its money,” he added, winking at Enora.
They reached the office, and Diana was delighted to see that Torres had kept the liquor cabinet dutifully stocked. “My, my… what to choose from.”
“Di, there is literally a tonne of free champagne downstairs,” scoffed James.
“Sneaking is more fun.” Diana smiled, glancing about the room before her eyes settled on Emershan. “We made some memories here.”
James scoffed again. “Spare us the details.”
“Yeah, I’m not planning to find out every place you guys di it in here,” Énora laughed as she ventured further into the office, stroking James’ back as she passed him by. “So, what is the deal with this place? I knew it was huge but what’s the story here? Why didn’t you get a fucking castle in Belgium?”
Diana shrugged. “I’m all for the extravagance, but it seems… unnecessary. More suited to an embassy than a family home. Besides, it’s a bit old-fashioned for my taste. I prefer a modern design… perhaps because of where we grew up,” she added, glancing at her brother.
“Bigger house means more ways to avoid Mum,” chuckled James as he raided the bar.
Frowning slightly, Diana turned to look at Emershan. “You prefer the place in Texas now. I mean, over this one.”
Emershan shrugged, opening up the liquor cabinet to pick up a nice bottle of scotch, cracking it open.
“No house is good without you in it,” he threw a wink in his wife’s direction before pouring her a glass. “I’ll send him a better bottle when we are back home, to replace this one.”
Diana glanced back at Énora and James, seeing they were distracted with each other before she turned to Emershan, her voice a whisper. “I want to talk to you. About Texas. It’s not… I’m not happy about it.”
Emershan shook his head, glancing briefly around the room before pulling his wife slightly on the side.
“You want to talk about this now?” He said, keeping his voice low.
“There’s never a right time. And I always feel wrong for saying anything, or not saying anything…” She paused, taking another sip of champagne. “You’re right. Now’s not the time. Forget I said anything. Let’s just have some fun.”
“I don’t like being away too,” he said, leaning closer to her and squeezing her arm gently. “I think we can have a deeper conversation at the hotel maybe?”
He exhaled softly, looking at her with mixture of worry and sadness on his face.
“We can talk about it now too if it’s spoiling your fun.”
“I want you to come home,” she said simply. “I don’t want to be the kind of wife who gives an ultimatum, so understand that’s not what I’m doing.”
She noticed James glance in their direction, and shook her head. “You’re right, we’ll… talk later.”
“I love you,” he rested both hands on her shoulders. “We’ll fix this, I don’t like being away from you guys either.”
He also noted James and Enora’s curious glare on them.
“Let’s continue the tour after we all stock up on alcohol.”
“Yes, let’s.” Diana drained her glass and tracked for another, while James turned to Énora with a shrug.
“Alright, let’s see what we’ve got here. Nice whiskey, some gin… the receipe for a hangover tomorrow, that’s for sure,” he chuckled, winking at Énora. “What do you feel like, baby?”
“Why don’t you choose, love?” She asked with a smirk, nuzzling her husband’s neck. “What will get me drunk and promiscuous?”
“Yo,” Emershan said to his sister. “We’re still here.”
James laughed loudly. "Fuck, water would do that." He laughed again, ignoring Emershan. "Here, I’ll mix you something and then we’ll check out the rooms in this place. What was that you said about an indoor pool, Emershan?"
