Worldwide Wizarding Schools

Okay so I woke up this morning and decided to do this (I know I know it’s fine) and statistically, mathematically, logically, compassionately, I would like to ask JKR what she was thinking because

Here’s the math I was thinking about, take care of yourself, don’t look if math triggers you lol

In 1991, there were about 5 billion people in the world. Now there are 8.142 billion people. That’s a huge change, and a lot of the population growth we’ve seen has happened in India and China in terms of absolute growth, but in terms of percent increase it’s a whole different story. Even in 1991 (the year when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone takes place), India and China’s population dwarfed that of the UK. Despite that fact, JKR didn’t write in her official wizarding schools thing that either one had any schools for magic, which is suspicious. Hmm.

In 1991 the UK had 57.42 million people, and right now it has around 69.6 million. Assuming we’re talking about 2025 and the UK hasn’t added any more magic schools, that means that 69.6 million humans includes around 1000 magical children, as was JKR’s estimated total of students at Hogwarts, and therefore is equivalent to one school which fits 1000 children. So dividing the population of each region or country by 69.9 million gets us the following totals:

India should have 21 magical schools

China should have 20 magical schoolks

The US should have 5 schools

Indonesia should have 4 schools

Pakistan and Afghanistan should have 4 schools

There should be 7 West African Schools, and 3 in Nigeria alone

3 Brazilian Schools, and 7 South African Schools in total

There should be 5 Central American schools and 2 Mexican ones.

The Polynesian Islands and the South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand, should have 2 schools.

Southeast Asia should have 3 schools

Bangladesh alone should have 2 schools

Russia should have 2 schools

Eastern Europe should have 4 schools + Durmstrang for the Nordic regions

Italy and Spain/Portugal/Catalonia/Basque Country need one each

One in Central Europe

Japan needs two

The Koreas need one

The Philippines need one

North Africa needs 4

Egypt alone would need 2

The Middle East as a whole would need 5

Ethiopia would have 2 schools, and East Africa would have 7

There would be 2 schools for the countries which border the Adriatic/Aegean Seas

Worldwide, there should be around 114 magical schools.

And considering the fact that I’m no mathematician and I’m sure I missed some parts, there might be more (hence why I added one in Canada, because they’re possibly friendly enough to let everyone in). Also, some areas don’t have enough for a full school, like Caucasus, who only have enough for 1/4, but then where do they go?

Of course, this is a purely objective total not taking into account the likelihood that children in the particular region would go off to school at all vs being taught by their parents or communities, which was JKR’s argument. Of course, schools also aren’t all the same size, so it’s very possible that there could be 5 huge schools in India or twenty tiny ones in Scandinavia. But considering Hogwarts as an average, with a sort of middling teacher-to-student ratio, a lot of these numbers are pretty incredible to me. If you get too many kids per student, like that one post I saw about Ilvermorny (the American school) being a baseball stadium for lectures, it becomes really hard to focus on each individual student and how is anybody supposed to learn anything, then? You also have to take into account that the ratio of Magic to Muggle students in a given area might vary throughout the world, and the global conflicts that we have that would cause areas such as, for example, the conflict between the Koreas which would make it so they probably don’t want to share a school.

Non-sequitur, but I’d also like to point out that Ilvermorny is supposed to be in a huge castle in Massachusetts. Look, I don’t know who’s been to Massachusetts, but for those of you who haven’t, there are definitely not huge, baronial-style castles just sitting around. It’s much more likely, therefore, that Ilvermorny would be in a sort of colonial architecture-based style if its founders really came on the Mayflower in 1620. It could be the sort of thing where it started out like that, and then got added onto and added onto again, so it’s in a myriad of clashing architecture styles. Honestly it’d be most likely of all that Isolt Sayre was teaching kids whose parents were off hunting behind her log cabin.

There are just so many possibilities for different kinds of wizard schools around the world from a million cultures, and the assumption that they all have to be castles is really stupid. Come on! Imagine the possibilities if you’re a wizard who’s studying directly on the Mediterranean, would their school be half in the water? Or in the middle of Tokyo on the 500th floor of some building? The possibilities!

And the cultural divides, too. Like arguments between schools on teaching and magic. I just think it’s a cool idea. There’s a big world!

I commend your efforts! Really, this is the kind of canon analysis I thrive on. That said, I would recommend paying a bit more attention to the canon if you’re intending on doing analysis of this level. I don’t mean to stifle your enthusiasm or anything, but you have some errors in there. This post is in the spirit of stimulating quality analysis, I'll try my best to keep to that and I hope you'll take it in the spirit it's written.

First off, you forgot to factor in the population of Ireland into your initial calculations. Hogwarts canonically takes in students from what in the muggle world is the countries of UK and Ireland. So already the numbers need to be redone to have any kind of accuracy. I would also criticize your decision to base your calculations on pre-2000 number of Hogwarts students but current world demographic data. We do not know and can't be sure that Hogwarts hasn't expanded in the decades since Harry's time there, or whether the extra students have enrolled in a small regional school (possibly a new one, possibly an enlarged older one). As you correctly point out, UK population has seen quite a boost in the time between. It's this kind of inaccuracies that introduce errors into calculations. We cannot in fact just presume that Hogwarts population has stayed the same and expect the numbers to be correct, and we cannot presume that Hogwarts has stayed the only educational institute worthy of notice in the decades since then, if it ever even was the only one instead of just the only one with a stellar reputation. When you do the numbers this way, with one comparison point from the nineties and another from thirty years later, you're potentially grossly inflating the number of schools required.

But then we also need to take into account that not all schools are going to be the same size, even within the Elite Eleven. We know that Uagadou is the biggest and "Mahoutokoro"* the smallest, but we don’t know the actual numbers there. So the best we can do when playing with the numbers is to calculate how many Hogwartses worth of students could be expected out of any given region. Not how many actual schools there would be. For all we know Hogwarts could be the second smallest and the average size of an Elite Eleven school is drastically larger. That’s not something that can be helped since we don’t have enough info on the other schools, calculating Hogwartses is the limit based on that particular bit of data. There is no basis whatsoever for presuming that Hogwarts is any kind of average. It's a school that only serves one tiny island group, after all. Every single other school we know about serves a region with much more people than that. Again, calculating Hogwartses worth of students is the absolute limit of what that particular data can actually offer. If going for calculating the number of schools required worldwide, I'd recommend factoring in Durmstrang and Beauxbatons and their service areas. With three datapoints you'll get a much more accurate look at how big an average magical school of the Elite Eleven can be expected to be.

*there are no words for how much I loathe that name. I have decided it's a descriptor, like "School of Witchcraft and Wizardry" is for Hogwarts. I shall not hear otherwise.

But wait, there’s even more. The schools we know by name are only the known ones among eleven that have international recognition. Which is why I persist in calling them the Elite Eleven. We do in fact get confirmation that there are eleven total Hogwarts-level schools of international renown in the world, even though we don't have names for all of them, and we do get confirmation in the very same Pottermore writeup that there are also lesser known schools out there. Aside from the six Elite Eleven schools with names we know that there's one in Australia and one in China - there might not have been any way to know where the Chinese one is exactly, but I see you also failed to mark a single school in Australia. Additionally, we also know about a school in Russia, called Koldovstoretz, but we don't know whether it's one of the Elite Eleven schools or whether it's a lesser known regional school. In fact, we know it's more or less where you erroneously marked Durmstrang to be - I see you've tried to go for accuracy at least on this point but the map graphic with the fancy school markings originally seen on Pottermore has the schools sometimes in wildly different positions from where they're described to be. From the description we know Durmstrang must in fact be in Norway, possibly Sweden. I see you've marked a random smaller school in its actual approximate position.

Also do note that even with China and Australia factored in (and possibly Koldovstoretz), that's still only 8-9 out of the eleven large internationally renown schools we know exist. You specifically point out India (and China, but I've already pointed out we know there's an Elite Eleven school there, although granted that info came out long after the Pottermore article) as somewhere that desperately needs magical schools, but we don't actually know if there is or not. We're still missing the locations of those 2-3 other Elite Eleven schools, not to mention all those smaller regional schools that we already know exist in canon. Again, from the same source that introduced the concept of the other large schools after just Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever bothers reading the source before they complain. I've never seen a single complaint post about the lack of schools from people who've bothered looking it up instead of just listening to some rando posting online and then adding to the heap. (there's still plenty of reason to complain, I just never see canon-based complaining about them) Sorry, allow me this one genuine moment of frustration, we'd have so much more quality discussion about the schools if people checked their sources!

Here, I'll link it to you even. The first sentence of the first non-bolded paragraph tells us that there's eleven of the large internationally known schools. The first sentence.

Moving back to the numbers, I trust this is enough to point out why this kind of calculation is not already done to death. We simply don't have enough data to come to firm conclusions. Any calculation must by the mere fact of that lack be relying on assumptions that introduce the kind of errors that not many are willing to accept. Even when doing the math with the correct numbers those necessary assumptions will move the results from the nature of canon analysis to fanon and headcanons.

Don't get me wrong, there's definite value in that! We're fans, it's just natural that when we find a gaping hole in canon we attempt to fill it. But raging at the 'canon' for what you see as lack, because of those assumptions that must be made to crunch the numbers, is not actually raging at the canon. It's raging at the fanon you yourself created or possibly what others online created and then you presumed to be canon instead of checking sources.

There are definite things wrong with the canon. Those regional schools the Pottermore article so denigrates must be quite common indeed. The lack of any acknowledged historical schools that have since fallen (nobody will believe that Egypt or the Mesopotamian empires or the various Chinese dynasties etc didn't have their own schools. Nobody.) only makes the canon seem more lacking than it potentially is. However, and I find myself pointing this out in this kind of debates over and over again. There is also no sense in falling for fanon sensationalism and dismissing what's actually there in canon. To do actual analysis, you must first know and acknowledge what's actually canon.

I could go on a tangent here and draw up a red thread board about the effects of the Statute of Secrecy on wizarding geopolitics and the countries that wizards acknowledge exist, since we know (also from Pottermore) that it's canon that wizarding governments completely separated from muggles at the time the Statute was implemented, but I'll spare your eyes this time. Let's just say I don't agree that the Koreas ever separated in the wizarding world. But that truly is a separate subject entirely.

Happy canon checks and lots of quality meta to you! I hope you'll continue to write analysis, just with a bit more care towards what is canon and what isn't.

Thank you so much for the follow-up on my analysis (analysis of analysis if you will)! You’re totally right about my calculations from pre-2000s and now being incompatible, and about Ireland. I’ve failed by boy Seamus Finnigan 🤦. I’d need to do the math over again, but in rereading and considering school size differences and such I think it might be too complicated to get an even close to accurate number— it’s not fair to assume that they’re all the same size, even for quick mathematical estimation. I stand by my original statement that if schools get too big they are simply not able to teach students properly and fully, but there’s a long way to go between Hogwarts and that situation.

I haven’t read any Pottermore pages in forever, so you're definitely right about me needing to check canon! Most of what I was reacting to is the bit about JKR not being able to “vouch for the quality” of these other schools which aren’t official, which seemed strange to me. But I’ll be the first to admit that due to the fact that I really, really don't like that woman, I do read her works with an especially critical eye to her mistakes and Anglocentrism. I will be on board with criticizing her probably too easily, and did first see this idea online, not in canon. Again, I stand by the fact that there must be more schools, but that doesn’t contradict what she says or what you say. They could just not be part of the ‘Elite Eleven’.

If I get time for fun math one of these days, I might rework these calculations with all this in mind— if I do, I’ll let you know and I’d love to know what you think.

okay y’all, I’m roughly rewriting Ninjago now. Buckle in, here’s my plan for

Pilots - Season 2

This chunk is staying almost exactly the same, bc I personally think these two seasons were perfect, and the real pure vibe of the show concentrated in one place.

Small changes would be:

More emphasis on Lloyd being aged up

More references to the return of the overlord in later seasons. Planting the seeds for his return in Crystalized

Tournament of Elements

THIS IS WHERE THINGS GET CRAZY.

I have decided to move rebooted. I’m so very sorry if y’all were very attached to it, but I’ve decided that for everyone’s best interest it needs to be combined with Prime Empire.

Reasoning:

I dont like how Rebooted starts with the ninja as teachers, implying they’re grown; this was their first season back after trying to conclude the show with season 2, so of course it isn’t great, but with my 20/20 hindsight, I’m taking all the fun stuff with retirement and putting it in with Forbidden Spinjitzu. Bc I do like that they randomly became teachers lmao but I don’t know why they put it there when they’re all fourteen years old 😔

Also, I don’t think the Zane death thing should happen so soon! I like the idea of a more subtle build up to character death, and putting Zane’s sacrifice in the prime empire area makes it feel more impactful to me.

How Does It Work Now?

Great question!

We open on tournament of elements, now technically season 3 (ie taking place after season 2), to find the ninja in a very similar place to that which we see in season 11; very childlike, complacent.

They initially hear about the tournament from a mysterious invitation, and they get excited because it would be a chance to meet others like them, but Wu and Garmadon obviously find it suspicious (they know about Chen and the evil nonsense but the chuds don’t tell them that), and want to keep them safe.

They DO go, however, when Ronin captures Zane and brings him to Chen, as both a matter of coincidence (ronin runs into him and just yoinks him) and as bait for the other ninja.

From there it’s very similar!

One difference is that PIXAL is now introduced when Zane sends out a signal with his robot brain (idk) and Pixal happens to intercept it. She is currently working a routine job for Cyrus Borg, and when she hears from a fellow robot, but one with emotion (something she has never experienced), she is incentivized to go help him.

She finds her way to the island, tries to save Zane, helps out a bit and interacts with the ninja a little bit, but inevitably is captured and scrapped.

Pixal is presumed dead when Zane finds her like this, and refuses the offer to be kept alive inside his mind. (I hated that so much it drives me nuts so I got rid of it)

And Pixal is “dead”.. that is, until she returns as samurai X in hands of time!

Okay goodbye, back with more soon (bc I need to do all of this now unfortunately)
