Seeing posts about iwtv season 3 is like watching a big ass iceberg float by… would have been bad to hit that I guess. A thought I had while cutting onions: could you do cry training like cry exposure therapy where you cut onions every single day until you have tears running down your face and you become desensitized to the whole experience of crying so that you become one of those people who can have a quick sob in the restroom at work and then go back to normal instead of basically going through a 24 hour post lacrimal state where you can’t do anything for the rest of the day

it always fucks with me that before benji, ruben was widely considered a Chill and Normal guy. like yeah, at worst, if you knew him when he was younger, you think "yeah, he's a hot-head. ex-con. had a lot going on when he was a kid. but a nice guy these days!" he spit in joanna's face and she let bygones be bygones enough to hear him out. his co-workers have a nickname for him! fucking roy lets him crash at his house six months out of the year! insane. and even after benji, people are still charmed by him. probably in part because of niall massaging his image, but still! people at the wedding laugh at his jokes, converse with him freely. his chaperone at the funeral regards him fondly, genuinely seems invested in his rehabilitation. it's so fucked, man!

#I'm still utterly godsmacked by Lori saying 'he's big and fluffy underneath it all'#like she of all people should know better#but !#I think there's a certain safety in being perceived as a big stupid lump of a man#which Ruben absolutely is#he has this deceptive wide-eyed innocence that shields him from criticism#because people don't think he's capable of being conniving or abusive because he's too stupid#and because he's perceived as stupid all of his actions are just seen as sort of. temper tantrums#his childlike inability to emotionally regulate or to behave according to accepted social norms actually works to endear him to people#in the same way an unruly 7 year old gets a laugh and a 'boys will be boys!' and forgiven for being a genuine terror#he's in his 40s with 3 prison sentences under his belt and people are just like haha there ruben goes throwing his toys around again!#and I do think this is an intentional commentary on the intersection of social conditioning and intelligence and masculinity (himbos etc)#because niall - who is intelligent and educated and crucially Not masculine - is NOT forgiven for his behaviour in the same way#when he acts out like Ruben does (slamming the table at the cafe with joanna sticks out in my mind) he's swiftly told to cut it out#he's held accountable for his behaviour in a way Ruben is Not and I do think it has everything to do with their perceived intelligences#and possibly also their perceived masculinity#half man#*gobsmacked
