“So do something else.”
“And what do you suggest? Fishing?”
“Yeah you could get arrested for that shit. Maybe they could give you a free eye-test in prison though because I’m clearly in my twenties.”
"Clearly.”
“I’m Harry fucking Potter and Voldemort got to them so stop assuming I have some kind of fantasy about you being a drug dealer which I never even mentioned and go take some supplements that help you gain a sense of humour, okay?”
“I don’t have time to play games with children.”
“Boil them?”
“Do you not have parents? Being a drug lord isn’t a real career and I’m not going to play up this fantasy you have.”
“You really just turned my comment into something sexist?”
“Men do a lot of ignorant things. I’m not apologizing due to my previous experience.”
“That’s probably a sign, work sucks.”
“Possibly. It’s been what I’ve been doing for years.”
“When you’re cooking up the drugs?”
“I don’t cook drugs, sweetie.”
“Isn’t that quite a fun profession, though?”
“Being a chemist? Oh, absolutely. I had been out of work for a few weeks due to a break-in and can’t see myself maintaining the schedule anymore, however.”
“Quit.”
“I’m no quitter. But of course a man would be the one to suggest me leaving my job.”
There was far too much silence that met his words, realizing that he’d overshared or put too much forward for someone that didn’t even know the first thing about himself, Mason suddenly felt shy within himself. It was an unfamiliar feeling, something that he once would have swallowed with a bottle or a handful of pills, anything to make him feel more put together and stronger than he was, but he wasn’t that guy anymore. The shadow of a doubt was there, reminding him that he still had much to fix, still had a lot to do, and still had people to make up all his mistakes to which left him feeling overwhelmed by it all. His shoulder didn’t help, neither did the fact that he could feel her eyes on him even when he couldn’t meet her eyes, closing them slightly at the feel of her hand on his face, tilting his head back up again. Her lips were on his, telling him that he wasn’t as alone as he felt and that he wouldn’t always be that way, if he accepted help and let people in. She showed him that there was more than his past to define him as his good arm reached up to wrap around the back of her neck. It wasn’t until a few moments later, his lungs burning, that he broke the kiss and felt his body react to her touch more than out of the strain on his shoulder. “Don’t say anything, okay? You don’t have to say a word. I just needed to get that off my chest and let you know, up front, who I was because that’s not who I am anymore.”
She couldn’t recall how long she had her lips pressed against his. Though, she could feel her hands instinctively feel him, brushing against his cheeks as she took in his scent with each breath of air. This wasn’t like her - none of this. She was someone who would’ve suppressed feelings for any affection and pretend the world outside her lab didn’t exist. Jaqueline stuck to schedules. To a planner. A notebook. This was outside of her control, and while her mind was screaming for her to stop, she wouldn’t pay mind to it. It wasn’t until he pulled away, and she breathed heavily against him. Her dark eyes scanned his face as she pulled away so her gaze could focus. Licking her lips, Jaqueline nodded. They’d come too far in whatever this was for her to turn back on what they had. "I believe you.” She whispered, her fingers carding through his thick hair. “We don’t need to talk about it anymore.”
“I’ve been on vacation for so long, I cannot fathom gong back to work in a lab.”

He let her lead, not knowing where they were going until she set him down on the edge of the bed and went off to grab more pillows and a blanket. Mason watched her, not sure of what to say right then as he let her take the courage to fill the silence with words that let him know that there was more going on than someone helping him. They were helping each other, because he could see there was more to her than he could have even guessed when they first met, something that had him accepting her offer to help when he’d made so many turns to do the exact opposite. “If you knew the whole truth about me,” he shook his head as his words carried more weight on them than he would have liked. “You wouldn’t think the same thing. I’ve make mistakes and I’ve had to live with them and not accepting help has probably been the worst of them. I know how hard it is to let someone see what isn’t perfect and not be afraid that they’re going to walk away because I’ve been that person before.” He swallowed thickly, meeting her eyes as she pressed her fingers into his. “I’ve been the person to walk away before and I can’t look myself in the eye because of it. It’s a terrible feeling and one that I regret.”
The weight in his words caused her to pause. There was so much to them that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue accepting him in fear of how much it’ll affect her in the end. She wanted change, and she was slowly accepting the change Mason created in her life by simply becoming part of it, but the giant darkness of uncertainty was what frightened her. Yet, when he continued to speak, she couldn’t help but feel that he was actually her. They both had made mistakes in their lives, and they both had to live with the consequences due to their actions. The only difference was that Jaqueline accepted the mistakes. His words made her decide, in a silent pact to herself, that she would be there until she didn’t need him anymore. She took his hand tightly. “Mason...” She whispered, stepping forward. The petite female moved to cup his cheek as she looked into his eyes, biting her lower lip. There wasn’t a way she was able to tell him, but as she moved to press her lips against his, she hoped the gesture within itself would help tell him what she couldn’t say herself.

“And a horrible one, Jack. She asked me out, I thought I might be doing pretty well since I’ve got a date, and…nope.”
“I can’t imagine anyone asking you on a date. I mean... and... never mind.”
“ – and she didn’t even understand my Star Wars reference! Long story short, or long story long, I suppose, it was not a very successful date.”
Jaqueline narrowed her eyes. “You went on a date?”

After he’d spoken, Mason wasn’t sure that she’d take his words the way he meant them or not, but the hesitation only lasted for a moment before he met her eyes and saw a smile take over her features. Maybe she didn’t understand what he meant, not one for planning too far into the future or moving at a pace that he wasn’t ready for, not when he had plenty still left to do where he stood. His shoulder would heal, his work would take him away again, anything could happen, but he knew that right then, he enjoyed her company and he’d let himself be taken care of for a night. It was a huge step when he’d done everything in his power to push away every single person that attempted to care. Her fingers slipped into his own, tugging him along gently as he followed where she led with a smile on his face that matched her own. “One day a time,” he replied with a squeeze, ignoring the pain in his shoulder as best he could while they walked slowly. “I know, it’s just, something I need to work on about accepting help. I haven’t been the best about that before now but I want to be.”
She led him down a hall, humming as he spoke. He was just like her. She knew how hard it was to accept help from another, but she was unsure if she would want anyone to help her. There was so much going on in her life, letting someone come in with the possibility of doing the wrong thing would mess up the delicate ecosystem she spent ages to perfect. “One day at a time.” Jaqueline mimicked, sliding the dimmer on her room so there was enough light for the two of them could see. Leading him to the bed, she allowed him to pick a side. “I’m too much of a perfectionist to want help.” She finally admitted, squeezing his hand before letting go. She went into her closet and returned with an extra blanket and a few pillows stacked upon one another. “And for some reason, I’m willing to let you know all of this. For some reason, I don’t think you’ll reject me because I’m more human than I thought I was.” She finished, setting the pillows at the head of the bed and unfolding the blanket. “As far as you working on accepting help, I can tell you that you’re doing a good job.” Jaqueline said, coming back to the other and reaching for his hands. “You’re a strong person, Mason.”
johnny-boy-harris:
“Why not…” he shook his head with a snort.
She narrowed her eyes, looking at the other before proceeding to pick what she needed. “Is there a problem or do you always seem to be that irritating?”

Mason dropped his chin against the top of her head, leaning close as he wrapped his good arm around her. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this close to someone, vulnerable and open enough that he wasn’t afraid that they’d see his faults and judge him for them all. Instead she supported him, stayed by his side, and didn’t shy away when he wasn’t ready to move forward at a pace that once would have been too slow for him. There was a time when he would have jumped at the chance to end up in bed with a beautiful woman, but he wanted something more and didn’t want to lose the what he felt right then with her in his arm. “Nothing doesn’t have to mean nothing,” he pressed his lips against the top of her head with a grin. “It just means that everything will happen as it comes, later.” When he was at the top of his game, fully healed, and could use both arms to wrap around her. “Other than the fact that I have no idea where it is,” he chuckled lightly, pulling back enough to see her face again. “I’d appreciate the help.”
She paused, taking in his words. She always felt that word held so much weight. So much void. Yet, as he spoke, a new meaning formed in her mind. It doesn’t have to mean what she thought it meant, and he was completely right. The way he thought and spoke was beautiful, and it opened her up to more than just opening her past to him. Mason was changing how she thought about the present and future; something she wouldn’t have ever done had she not have met him. He made her more accommodating, and easy. Jaqueline began to allow herself at a pace that was slower than she’d wanted and it was refreshing. “We’ll take it a day at a time.” She said to him, closing her eyes for a few moments. Looking up at the other, she smiled. “Come on.” She hesitated, pulling herself away from the other slowly before taking his hand in hers, fingertips playing with his. “I’m here to help you. Whenever you need me, okay? I have your back.”
