I don’t know much about the SJW themes in the new movies, but I think the reason so many people are against most of the new Star Wars movies, is due to the way they handled the source material.
I think most people would agree that The Force Awakens was an all right movie, with some interesting new characters who could have been built into great ones with the right writing, however the movie didn’t feel like it tried to build on the original trilogy. It felt more like it wanted to re-establish a status quo, with the good guys being rebels and the enemy a big empire, despite these factions having ran their course, and finished their arc in episode six.
The biggest offender among the new movies is undoubtedly The Last Jedi (and I’m gonna go into spoilers here). A movie which disregarded any sort of established characters (both from the old and the new films), continuity, in universe rules, and lore.
The movie was all over the place, with poor writing for the characters and the story, and building almost 100% on subversion of people’s expectations.
Replacing interesting ideas, not with other, unexpected, interesting ideas, which might even make more sense, but with either less original, less interesting concepts (Luke just wanted to run away to die, and Snoke just wanted to get his hands on Rey to kill her), or just no concepts at all (Rey’s parentage being brought up again, just to turn out to be irrelevant, and Snoke dying without his backstory being explored).
Old characters are robbed of their dignity (Luke is a coward now, who at some point contemplated killing his nephew because he showed sight that he might be influenced by the dark side, Leia is space Mary Poppins and spends most of the movie in a coma), and new ones are either robbed of their purpose for existence in the movie (Finn’s plot line ending up being pointless), or of their humanity (Rey becoming a fully fledged marysue).
The newly introduced characters are either portrayed as incompetent (Admiral Holdo failing to share her plans with her crew, and causing the conflict in the movie, then being portrayed as a hero) or preachy and out of place (Rose’s “rich people are evil” subplot and final action in the Crait battle, causing the victory of the First Order).
But yeah, despite being rather wordy here, I’d suggest that if you are truly interested in having an irrefutable answer to your question, and you have the time and the patience to, watch these three videos by MauLer detailing the unbelievably long list of flaws The Last Jedi has, and refuting some of the defenses fans made for them.
Anyway, it’s not like the new movies are all bad. Like I said, The Force Awakens was an all right movie, and definitely better than any of the prequels
And I personally thought Rogue One was great. Probably the best Star Wars movie to be made since the original trilogy.
It has interesting, relatively well developed characters, both on the Rebel and the Empire side.
An interesting plot, which ends up improving upon the original trilogy by plugging up an infamous plothole in episode four.
And all this without relying on what makes Star Wars what it is for most people; like light saber battles, or constant, forced references to the old movies.
And the references which do show up generally make sense, or are brief enough that they don’t feel like they are taking valuable time away from the movie’s own plot and characters.
Of course it’s not a perfect movie, but I think it was handled as well as a movie of such a scale, with so many characters, and in such a limited time-frame could have been.
So it’s not like they can’t make good Star Wars movies with a “diverse” cast, it’s just that they are not truly trying. Hiring people who are either not skilled enough for the job, or simply don’t care.
And I haven’t seen Solo yet, so I can’t speak for whatever is in that movie, but I’m guessing there probably was a reason why it ended up having the worse box office of all Star Wars movies to date :I
