(   Matthew Lillard  +  Cis Male  +  He/Him  )     ⸻    Meet   Jasper Lapintin.  The  Medical Administrator  at  Glen Ellen General Hospital  is  Glen  Ellen's  very  own  sly fox, who  has  been  in  town  for  five years. While  they  are  only fifty three, they  can  be  very   taciturn but  if  their  friends  mentioned  them, you'd  think  they  were  more  resilient. In  a  town  where  every  one  knows  everyone,    it's  hard  to  keep  a  secret,     but  i  think  the  killer  knows  that [REDACTED], and  it's  bound  to  get  out  sometime  soon.

Jasper grew up in a small town as a troublemaker who took pride in his ability to be uncatchable by the local law enforcement. He was thought highly of in his social circle and enjoyed the carefree life of having no responsibilities. 

He was made to give up everything he loved when his unofficial girlfriend gave birth to their daughter. From then onwards he settled down and lived a largely unremarkable life. 

He and his wife grew distant as their daughter entered adulthood. Jasper preferred to be alone and his wife suffered the loneliness. 

After being encouraged to take a paternity test, Jasper found out his daughter was not biologically his. He immediately filed for divorce. 

He left his hometown and moved to Glen Ellen in a last ditch attempt to reinvent himself with no-one holding him back or directing him.

❝   gonna   buy   those   ?   ❞   dirty   blond   points   at   the   last   box   of   fruit   loops   the   guy   holds   at   hand   .   his   own   fault   to   have   gone   shopping   last   minute   before   it   was   his   weekend   of   parenting   .   his   fault   .   like   everything   always   was   .   and   yet   .   .   .   somehow   probably   still   more   relaxed   to   rush   through   the   store   within   just   half   an   hour   than   to   rush   through   the   store   within   just   half   an   hour   with   a   toddler   stopping   at   every   other   aisle   because   ‘   daddy   can   i   have   this   ‘   and   him   battling   the   big   brown   eyes   to   saying   no   because   he   knew   ada   would   not   be   happy   about   it   .

Jasper was in no rush. He had noone to answer to and nowhere to be. So, grocery shopping became a social event. It became catching up with acquaintances and toying with strangers. Sometimes he had to go looking for people to bother and sometimes they seemingly fell into his lap. Ignoring the other's question entirely, he hit him with some of his own. "Have you seen the amount of sugar in these things? Is it any wonder kids have trouble focussing in school? I think I'd be bouncing off the walls." he chuckled to himself, shaking his head as he did so. "And the food colourings, so many. It's like a testing ground for allergies. I don't believe these loops have been anywhere near fruit in their lives." he tapped the box idly with his fingertip, his gaze yet to actually leave them to address the stranger. "Can you believe people give these to kids? I mean, our most precious resource, the future, and this is what we're raising them on?"

she    can’t    help    but    laugh,    softly,    and    lacking    any    malice    as    she    enjoyed    their    little    chat.    ❝    i    don’t    know    if    he    will    stay    relevant,    they    all    seem    to    peak    in    high    school    with    attitudes    like    this    !    ❞    there    was    one    in    every    year    that    she    went    to    school    and    then    on    top    of    that,    once    graduated,    university    had    the    same    students,    like    a    revolving    door    of    the    same    thing.    ❝    thankfully    i’m    only    responsible    for    them    about    six    hours    a    day,    i    don’t    know    if    it’s    different,    i    suppose    it    is,    i    guess.    I    don’t    think    i    could    handle    more    than    one    of    me,    if    i’m    being    truly    honest    with    you,    i    am    my    mothers    daughter    and    she    hated    that,    said    karma    would    come    around    for    me    with    children.    ❞    she    laughed,    unaffected    about    karma,    because    who    cared    too    much    about    that    ?

"Ah, the old high school heroes. I wonder where they all end up!" he chuckled, idly. Quietly assuming the real answer was likely a lot less funny and a lot more 'long hours for little money'. Thankfully her conversation kept him from dwelling on the topic longer than he needed to, her thoughts and ideas captivating him. "Oh my gosh, you're so right on that one!" he smirked, shaking his head. "One of me is far too many. I have to feed and bath this thing every day and it never wants to sleep, but it's always so tired!" he played along, laughing politely. "My dad was always amazing with me growing up. I'd love to have the chance to even be half as good, y'know? Pay it forward, kinda thing." This wasn't true, but, it made for a better story. "Every year for my birthday, he'd get a load of illegal fireworks and take me down to the beach and we'd let them off together. Now, I know that's a health and safety nightmare, but, it's the sort of thing you remember forty years later, y'know?"

shaking    her    head    once    more,    the    young    teacher    couldn’t    help    but    roll    her    eyes.    ❝    oh    please    ?    that    joke    was    running    when    i    was    in    school.    i    don’t    think    it’ll    ever    get    old    to    kids.    ❞    she    shrugged    her    shoulders    slightly.    ❝    thank    you,    i    know    most    people    would    just    walk    by    so    i    appreciate    it.    ❞    hair    flicked    over    shoulder,    the    girl    smiled    in    the    males    direction.    ❝    kids    being    kids,    i    have    a    whole    class    of    them    to    be    honest    with    you,    i    don’t    think    i    could    handle    one    of    my    own    yet    !    ❞

He smiled, enjoying the other's attitude. "Well, I'm pretty sure I was schooled long before you and I know it, so, that kid's gonna have to smarten up if he wants to stay relevant." he laughed, crossing his arms idly now that they were free once again. "Of course, it's not a problem at all. I hope the same mercy will be given to me if I ever get post-it-note'd." His eyebrows raised in interest as he was able to infer she was a teacher of some description. "I salute you. I raised one and I know for a fact, I couldn't handle more than one at a time. Do you think it's different when they're, like, actually yours? People always say about that bond they get. Maybe that's the magic ingredient, right?"

" well , you're in luck , handsome . ever since the whole mystery murder , no one wants to leave their home , " evie spoke without thinking her words completely through but then again , she didn't care anyway . " take a seat . " a slight grin graced her pink stained lips as she motioned for the male to take a seat at the empty chair in front of her .

"Oh, seriously?" His brows raised in surprise for a moment. He wasn't afraid of what had happened. Sure, the concept was unsettling, but, murder usually happened to people who knew the murderer, and, he didn't know too much of anyone. Perhaps overly cocky and confident rather than intelligent, but, it was the stance he took nonetheless. "I guess it's my lucky day, huh?" Jasper took to the seat he was allocated, taking a moment to fix his shirt once he was sat down. "Okay, so, wash, cut and blow dry work for you? Like I said, nothing fancy."

UNSURE as to what was so inviting for conversation, bash offered the stranger a blank stare. suppose he was suited for small towns, able to socialize with apparently everyone. sebastian didn’t get the appeal. he didn’t even know the other’s name, let alone ready to talk about his childhood in this shitty place. he let silence fill the space, sipping on his coffee before settling it down. “ shitty , i guess . everyone knows everyone . ”

He watched the other, beginning to realise they weren't someone who was going to just open up with a few gentle prods. Luckily, for Jasper, they were completely disposable. "Shitty people make for shitty towns." he agreed, nodding his head. "A shame a few bad apples would ruin things for everyone else." He shot the other a glance to see how they reacted, but mostly turned his attention back to his newspaper, chewing on the end of his pen as he read through the next clue.

"Excuse me!" Jasper raised his voice a little as he leaned over the bar, trying to flag down anyone that was willing to hear him out. "Sorry to bother you, but, do you guys keep, like, band-aids or anything back there? I've just managed to slice my finger shuffling cards like an absolute bozo." He was keeping his hand against his chest, not wanting anything to make it worse. "Even if you've something for my battered ego, that'd be amazing."

COMICAL THOUGHT of the novel being shared in school. perhaps some did, especially back in the day. bash certainly was more into literature than history to know where and when that came about, regardless, it was a must-read when he was a teen. " well , it is beautifully written , " he recalled. and fucked up, but that's part what he liked about it anywho. " don't think school made me read it. glen isn't really known for their scholarly subjects , "

"It's very beautifully written." Jasper agreed. He hadn't read the book since he was young, but, he'd seen the movie within the past few years as it tended to rerun thoughtlessly around Easter time. "I think it gets a bad reputation for being realistic. People don't like reality, especially not from fuzzy bunnies." he chuckled to himself. "Oh, you grew up here?" he turned to see the other more clearly now they had his attention. "What's it like being a kid here? I wouldn't want to try and grow carrots where I grew up, let alone raise a family."

teenagers.    was    the    only    thought    that    moved    through    her    mind    at    the    males    words.    eyes    fluttering    closed    with    a    sigh,    she    should    of    expected    it    really.    ❝    does    it    happen    to    say    kick    me    on    it    ?    ❞    she    couldn’t    help    but    chuckle    at    the    thought,    the    originality    of    it    all.    ❝    could    you    please    grab    it,    i’d    appreciate    it    !    ❞

Jasper looked to the note. He'd already seen it, but, looking again helped confirm it was truly there. He didn't think she should really know what it said and decided to play nice. "It totally does. Have we gone back in time? I could have sworn that joke was left behind in the nineties." he chuckled lightly, swiftly removing the note off of the stranger and crumpling it into a ball before stuffing it into the pocket of his jeans. "I'm going to guess you work in a school? Either that or you've ticked off your kid."

TYPICALLY sebastian had the type of face that made it clear that it wasn't the one to approach for small talk. either that, or his reputation kept people at a distance he preferred. and yet he heard a voice chirp up in the slow coffee shop, forcing his gaze to peer away from his laptop and to jasper. he had half a mind to tell the guy to fuck off, but refrained, mostly low on energy with the lack of sleep. " watership down ? " was the solution he came up with. " by richard adams . " lucky for the other, both puzzles and books were his forte. still, he let his gaze flutter back to an article he was little about good ole' glen dale in 2013.

Jasper counted the letters from the other's suggestion by gently tapping the pen off of each square of the crossword. "Right you are, my friend." he smiled, scrawling it down onto the paper. "Haven't read that one since I was in school, and that was a long time ago." he chuckled to himself. He was just happy to be talking, he didn't care too much whether or not the other was even listening. "Are they still teaching it? Or are you a book person? Less and less of them about these days. A dying breed."

"I don't want to embarrass you or anything." Jasper leaned in beside the other in the line at the coffee shop. He was pretending to be looking at the traybakes on offer to avoid drawing attention to the other. "But, there's a post-it note stuck to your back. I can get it for you if you want, but, I wouldn't leave it there if I were you."

"Hey, man." Jasper spoke, clearly just comfortably drunk. "I know this is a weird question, but, I've got to ask." A lazily piloted index finger poked against the strawberry that was wedged neatly into the side of his cocktail glass. "Do people actually eat the fruit? Or is it just there for show? I mean, I love strawberries, but, I don't want to be that guy, y'know?"

"Hey, are you any good at puzzles?" Jasper asked, raising his voice just enough so that the stranger knew he was talking to him. He was sat at a table in the coffee shop with a newspaper laid out in front of him which was heavily adorned with all kinds of scribbles from his doodling while thinking. "Thirteen letters. Oh, it's a crossword by the way." he tapped his pen off of the paper as he spoke. "It's the title of a book that follows a group of rabbits on their journey to a new home."

"I'm sure you guys are busy," Jasper began, fighting with the front door to the Tres Beux Hair Salon as his coat caught in it as it was closing. "But, d'you think you could squeeze me in? I don't have a lot of hair and it just needs tidied up for the holidays. A wash preferably, but, whatever you have time for." He put his hands together and looked over waiting to see if he could be served.
