hear me out tomshiv baby in season 4 but like. they start off the season basically separated. neither one acknowledges his betrayal but she doesn’t come home and he doesn’t ask why. shiv shows back up a few months later, tells tom she’s pregnant, because a baby is the only thing he still cares about from her, so it’s the only leverage she still has to get back at him with. she never wanted a kid, she was going to break the cycle of horrific parenting by parents who never really wanted kids, just pawns, but here she is, unable to escape the cycle, participating in it to get back at her husband who was supposed to protect her from it. Tom’s ecstatic, he’s tied to the Roys forever, he’s done it. Baby isn’t actually Tom’s. Shiv drops that bombshell after it’s born, after tom has solidified both of their interests in whatever the company turns out to be, “wins” the marriage betrayal game, but at the end of the day, she’s still left with a daughter she had for her own selfish purposes, not because she actually wanted to parent her. the cycles complete. Shiv wins but her child loses, because the kids always lose.

I think about Shiv and her relationship with the women in her life and I am sickened by their animosity for her, so territorial for their limited spot they’ve attained in an unjust game they will kill a child who was born into it. Imagine being Gerri. Imagine being a godmother to Shiv. Imagine years ago you and your husband made an oath in front of both your God and God to guide this infant, this pink crying boneless mass. How long did it take for you to look at her and see an enemy. Did you have the suspicions of envy for the sons? Or was it reserved for the daughter? Did you know that the men you protected might hurt her? Would you have cared? Or would that have threatened you too?
