the train station scene was extremely jarring to me as well: the way stack was looking around in paranoia; the way she kept going at him even when he tried to calm her down. hearing delta slim takinh about his friend that was lynched at the train station, just imagine what would have happened if they saw a black man arguing with a white woman.
and i know some people feel contrary. i seen folks talk about how she isn’t white cause of the one drop rule and stuff, but that doesn’t mean that she’s not operating in a way that a white woman would in black spaces. because she was ALSO a white woman in white spaces. that was her everyday experience. the surprise when cornbread notices her goes to show that she’s barely around, and when she does come back, she acts as if she owns everything.
how she kept calling sammie “boy” and pushing him aside. it truly disgusted me.
there’s a lot of nuance in her character that i can acknowledge, but that train scene really made me feel unsavory toward her.
i know that stack, his family, and the juke probably offered her a community that she could find herself within. she probably felt the most comfortable in her identity EVEN THOUGH you can still see that she has a certain level of insecurity about her role in that community—her relationship with stack, how her mother’s death has impacted her, her feeling betrayed because the twins didn’t come to the funeral.
I ALSO WANNA SAY i picked up on how cornbread apologized for him not being able to make the wake because he and his PREGNANT wife were WORKING IN THE FIELDS. i think that so wonderfully showcasing their societal positions. she doesn’t have to work, so she has luxuries not available to others in her community.
anyway. i like her character because there’s a lot to delve into and analyze, but she really be irking my nerves.
