Jessica Días, 30, Shapeshifter (Grey Fox)
Jessica Días was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico to a family of shapeshifters from Nicaragua. With two older brothers, it’s safe to say that Jessica was spoiled from birth, and spent most of her childhood trying to keep up with the rough and rowdiness that ensued between her brothers. As a result, Jessica grew to resent her conservative parents and their strict rules placed upon her. She longed for the days when she could shift into the fox her family was known for and skulk around with her brothers throughout the desert. She wanted nothing more than to have the freedom to make her own choices, to choose her own path in life, to do what she wanted. It was no surprise that when she turned eighteen, Jessica left Albuquerque with nothing more than a pocket full of one-hundred dollar bills she’d saved up, waiting for the chance to make a break for it.
Quickly adapting to a nomadic lifestyle, Jessica found herself moving from place to place, absorbing as much information as she could from each stop. Culture, folktales, history, whatever anyone had to share with her, she wanted to know. Her thirst for knowledge was never fully quenched, and so she found herself leaving after three to four months to her next destination - California. It was there that she met the people who would transform her life into something more meaningful, the people who would help her center herself and develop her shifting abilities. She never stayed long enough in a single place to discover if there were any other shifters or supernatural creatures like herself, so imagine the surprise when she found herself face to face with a pair of shifters almost as soon as she arrived. The two shifters invited the younger girl into their home, an RV of sorts, with the promise of teaching her everything she needed to know about her abilities and more. Within a matter of months, she’d learn to embrace her inner fox, to truly understand and appreciate the gift she was given. She’d never felt more at home than with her new family and learned to make the most of each day she was blessed with. Every good thing must come to an end, however, and after sending Sheamus on his way, the trio decided to go their separate ways themselves, promising to keep in touch. As much as Jessica tried her best to keep her friends updated on her travels, she too found herself drifting, altogether forgetting to send any sort of correspondence. She told herself that as a nomad, it would be impossible to track them down anyway.
Even though Jessica left Alberquerque as soon as she turned eighteen, she did return to her home year after year to celebrate the holidays with her family. She found it easier to tolerate them in small doses, and the fact that she’d only visit them once a year seemed to make her parents forget that she ran from everything they ever had planned for her. She found joy in showering her nieces and nephews with trinkets and tales from her travels across the country, but most importantly, she got the chance to do what she always wanted to do - shift with her family as a leash of foxes across the desert. This year, however, Jessica wouldn’t get the chance to do any of that. She returned to New Mexico, more eager than ever to see her family, only to arrive at an empty house. It had become overgrown, almost lifeless - a clear sign that her parents hadn’t been home in+ some time. It wasn’t until she knocked on a neighbor’s door that she learned their fate - her parents had been murdered, along with the rest of her family. Feeling completely helpless, there was only one person Jessica knew she would be able to find who could help her, protect her, and try to make some sense of what had happened to her family - Sheamus Vale.
Making the trek to New York should have been fairly easy for Jessica, however, she couldn’t help but feel paranoid since the incident. Who had killed her family? Were they targeted because of their supernatural ability? Was she next? All of these questions and more lingered in the back of her mind, making her even more cautious as she traveled across the country. Now, working as a housekeeper at The Hellion Hotel, a whole new world has been opened up when it comes to the occult. Finding out who or what happened to her family will always be her number one priority, however, Jessica finds herself more and more intrigued by the mysterious happenings and different supernatural creatures who call the city of New York home.
+ strong-willed, observant, versatile, curious
– restless, evasive, moody, unpredictable
Ever since Jessica was a child, she’s refused to let anyone walk behind her, if possible. She chalks it up to her skittish nature, thinking it makes her feel calm and at ease when she’s the one following, but in reality, this is due to her strange quirk of gawking at her surroundings like a tourist, even in well-known places.
Coming from a family with deep Central American roots, and wanting to keep the bloodline alive, Jessica’s parents planned an arranged marriage for her to another family of shapeshifters in Nicaragua. It was decided that when she turned eighteen, she would make the move to be married and live with her betrothed. However, Jessica’s thirst for adventure and her stubborn nature led her in a different direction.
Jessica will begin speaking Spanish whenever she’s angry or upset. It’s something she’s done since childhood, picking it up from her parents (especially her mother) and older brothers.
Jessica is constantly changing locations, staying no more than a few months at a time. She stays long enough to experience her surroundings, learn new lessons, form meaningful friendships, and earn enough money to support herself in her travels and lifestyle. She doesn’t form attachments easily, and the constant process of change is her teacher.
While she’s impulsive by nature, Jessica does have a part of herself that likes to maintain the balance in her life. For every adventurous, impulsive choice she makes on a whim, she tries to balance it out with something calming, like an afternoon of meditation or relaxing in a hot bath.
