Art project #5
I love this! Not only is it durational, but your very activity is centered around time itself. It allows for another level of self-awareness on how we use every second of our days!

ART 1531 - Performance Art
For my performance piece, I decided to film myself experiencing old videos. I wanted to include honesty and what it looks like to go back in time. When I was creating my verb list, I thought about what we do that brings out all of the emotions I listed. My idea was solidified when I watch the documentary about Marina Abramovic. I donāt know that performance art is my forte but I liked my ability to honestly show emotions and experiences.
This is amazing! I can see you thinking every single time someone says something, and while I canāt experience the emotions of the event, it is heartwarming to have the privilege of being allowed to see your emotions connected to your memories!
Project #5 Performance Art
For this project I was leaning more towards reading, but decided to write instead. I have always found a release in this, and Iām finding it now in photography. Using cursive, I wanted to convey part of the past slipping away, and part of the present arriving. The black and white was used to convey mood, and with the music I was hoping to create nostalgia.
I like that you chose writing. It can be oddly relaxing to watch and like you mentioned, itās a throwback to something that is becoming less and less common. Great work!
It is sad to see cursive becoming less and less common. While I still struggle a little with writing in cursive (letters wonāt stop rearranging themselves) itās a skill that I was taught when I was young. Itās amazing that even in the l 4 years separating me and my brother the complete lack of education in such a beautiful art form!

I gotta say, I have been insanely jealous of you all semester. This is a fantastic idea and like that it challenges people (me) to personify the things around us and think about them as more than just objects. Great work!
I love the creativity of this! The contrast between the dark and the light is very powerful!

I like that you chose such a personal kind of outlet. Many of us look in the mirror and ask the same questions. The environment may be different but the feelings are the same. Great work!
I love your use of a mirror in a non-traditional way. It reminds me just how inaccurately we see our own selves even in a clear reflection. Thank you for the reminder weāre all an (art)work in progress!

Project #5: The Artist is Present.
I decided to choose the verb painting. I have always had a love for painting. I decided to paint on a piece of wood using acrylic paints. I had fun making this video. I have never recorded myself painting something before, and I really loved watching the process of me doing it. I decided to time-lapse it so that it was not a 30 minute video. I like the time-lapse better because it looks cool as the painting comes together.
LOVE that you added the time-lapse!! ⦠and that you added music & typography to this video. So cool! and it reminds me of those videos you see when someone is either doing something creative with screen printing, or pancake batter ā we know it takes time, but the artist makes it look so much easier than it is.Ā Good job!
I love that you were able to so fluidly use time lapse videography! Itās tough!!! This is also very calming to watch, great job!
Project 5:
For this last project I really wanted to do a dance. Iāve always be interested in dance and how body movements can create emotion and tell a story. I wanted to show a story of self empowerment. A story of how you can be with someone and be so in-sync with them than you start to be the same person, and loose sight of the real you. You can be so depended on someone you become unsteady, until you find your strength to leave them. I put this dance together with my friend, hope you enjoy it.
Great video! I love the environment and dancing. Great work!
You were able to convey such a range of emotion with your dance! Very beautiful!
I love the symbolism you used in the video! I agree that clothing can be used to either define your identity or hide it- a choice each person has to make each and every day of their lives.
Project #5: Performance Art
I have never been very comfortable in front of a camera, let alone an audience. When I leaned the last project was going to be performance based, I froze- what could I do? But I remembered back to when I was young. I have always liked to sort things, especially when it wasnāt necessary to do so. One of the most common things I used to sort was my candy on Halloween. I would separate not only the pieces of candy by brand, but when I would open the candy I would sort the candy inside the bags as well. M&Mās are practically made to be sorted- their bright colors making easy categories. So I went back to my childhood and brought my affinity for categorizing to performance art and sorted as many M&Mās as I could in 60 seconds, stopping immediately when I reached the 60 seconds mark. I hope you enjoy!
Reading and film screening #5
Response to Marina AbramoviÄ: The Artist is Present
It amazed me how many of Marinaās works I had heard of, but never connected together under the name Marina AbramoviÄ. Her ability and willingness to push her body to the edge is inspiring. There are many days, especially study days, where I hardly move from my seat for hours on end, but never with the stillness and rigidity that Marina can put hers through. Each one of her performances, from the bow and arrow one with Ulay showing the power dynamic between men and women to her solo exhibition showing the power of a single women sends a powerful message that portraits cannot replicate. I also felt it was important that we got to see the administrative side of performance art. So often when we are on the consumer side of media we tend to forget the hours, days, weeks, months, and even years it takes to not only put the piece together, but to have the green-light to show the work. Such an inspiring woman, Marina AbramoviÄ.
Ā Response to Performance: A Hidden History
By looking at the origins of performance art, it becomes easier to understand why people would have decided to do performance art, and how the performance could both be use in a more āhigh-browā way or a direct contradiction to the very notion of āhigh-browā art. As a piece of art that can be anywhere at any time, performance art is nearly limitless. The Futurists and the Dadaists both had their own way of approaching the form of performance art, but their goal was the same- change the way people view art. Its is interesting to see the formation of such an expressive field over both of the world wars, further convincing me that Dumbledore was right- āHappiness [or in this case, creativity] can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.ā
PSA for Reading #5
The movie- Marina AbramoviÄ: The Artist is Present is on Hulu! Hulu also has a month free trial right now so Iām watching it there! A good option if youāre low in funds like I am!!!
Exercise#5
Hereās my verb list and my 3 favorites with my video ideas! Iām really torn between to organize and to eat especially!Ā
PROJECT #4
Song: āMan of the Yearā by Thee Cool Cats
I was excited for this project because Iāve been doing a lot of video art on my own lately and learning how to VJ. I chose the song because itās tempo is 120 beats per minute, which makes changing effects to the beat much easier.
Nice job with the vanishing shapes. The shapes appear to dance to the music, which makes it very interesting to watch.
I love the use of symmetry combined with abstract shapes! It makes the dance to the rhythm almost synesthetic!
Vanishing and Becoming
I think this is a beautiful video. I feel you on not being that experienced with the software so it can be disheartening to not be able to fully express whatās in your head. I think itās beautiful and I love how, even though melodic, the song is faster than the video and creates a pleasing dissonce.Ā
beautiful use of time-lapse video!Ā
ART 1531 - Project #4 - Vanishing & Becoming
I decided to do my video on a little diddy I created recently and included the piece of are reading that stuck out to me. Although all of it was insightful and provided the idea that television and projection is a form of art, the piece that specifically stood out to me was when the author mentioned the hand of the caveman. They might not have thought it was art at the time but they understood light and shadows and took the time to mark it. Iām not great with the video software, but Iām proud of how this turned out.
I think this is a great example of our reading while combining the hand and the light and the manipulation of the images to create the imagery of shadow. I like the changing tempos of the music and was trying to decipher whether you mixed music or all one piece.
Very calming and beautiful! I love the beats forming together to create the colorful display!
Dark times all around but there are still people out there who love you
Do not hurt yourself, do not hurt others, get help, talk to someone, anyone. Humanity has survived before and we can do it now if we all just support each other. My country and my people let me down and endangered my life but thereās nothing I or anyone else can do about that so letās try to spread the love that is so clearly lacking.
