hello hello! this is like my third writeblr but we're not gonna worry about it. i'm migrating from @/jeanjwould because that blog felt insanely cluttered so if you're following that blog, come on over! this will be basically the same thing, except i'm gonna also maybe talk about reading sometimes :)

me

✧ i'm a university student from the us midwest, majoring in english and minoring in sociology! ✧ my favorite genres to read (and write) are horror, fantasy, gothic, and (as of recently) sci fi—basically, anything otherworldly and/or implausible. ✧ my favorite authors are stephen graham jones, s.t. gibson, and samantha shannon :) ✧ along with reading and writing, i LOVE watching movies and collecting cds/records. i'm a freak for any pre-2000s rock music.

my writing

✧ i have like. way too many wips, most of which tumblr will probably never hear about. but don't worry about it!!! ✧ i mostly write (or try to write) novels. i dabble in short stories occasionally, but i don't think i'm very good with them. i also write poetry when the mood strikes, but i definitely wouldn't consider myself A Poet. ✧ i'm very bisexual, i love being bisexual and i love my fellow bisexuals, and that frequently bleeds into my wips (you will not find a single project devoid of a bisexual protagonist <3) ✧ staples of my wips include: women's wrongs (and rights), offputting romances, vampires (or vampire-adjacent storylines), shameless references to other authors/media, etc.

no intro post/synopsis yet but trust that it's ALWAYS on my mind. follows the brides of dracula (and mina harker!!) as they navigate the modern world and find themselves unable to escape the past. bisexual vampire women being messy!!!

thea harrower has spent the last four years happily married to the love of her life, jules. she has a comfortable house, a flexible-yet-stable career, and one of her best friends in the form of her dog; she's also managed to avoid marrying one of those controlling, domineering men she's always hearing about. in other words, she is happier than she ever could've dreamed of being. but even perfection can't last forever, and her tranquil domestic life will be thrown into upheaval when she suspects her husband of being replaced by a doppelgänger, a man who is jules in every aspect except the one that matters.

I think part of getting better is complete ego death. Like you’re not above setting a timer for 5 minutes and focusing on a task. You’re not above doing a very simple 3 minute workout to start. You’re not above reading for 10 minutes a day when you first get out of your reading slump, even if you used to read for hours. You’re not above starting slow and then building up to where you want to be/where you once were. What you are above is total inertia. Doing something really is better than doing nothing. Radically accept where you are, radically accept your limits, and go from there. Don’t let your ego get in the way.

Free writing advice while I've got my editing hat on: it is never a bad idea to add some sensory detail at the beginning of a new scene.

It doesn't have to be a full pause to describe the scene in excruciating detail, but a smell, a sight, a sound, a sensation, something will help to ground the scene and avoid having everything happen on an empty stage.

It is very easy to forget that the reader cannot see the inside of your head but if you make it a rule to put sensory details at the beginning of each new scene, let's say somewhere in the first two paragraphs, you will at least have given the reader something to latch onto and imagine along with you.

WIP INTRO | NATASIA & THE GLADEKING

SYNOPSIS

when natasia, a chambermaid of the timeworn castle pernskel, falls pregnant out of wedlock, life as she knows it is already slipping through her fingers. in her desperation, she inadvertantly summons a creature known to her only as the gladeking, a deity of the forest with a penchant for abducting children. what begins as a simple bargain with the gladeking quickly spirals into a much more complex game of manipulation, obsession, and if they aren't careful, devotion. (also known as "medieval maiden gets a magical elfbortion")

CHARACTERS

natasia | ( 24 ) the protagonist; striving for a standard she cannot reach. not who she believes herself to be, and braver than she thinks. the gladeking | ( ? ) a love interest of sorts; dangerous and wants to be even more so. understands much of others and little of himself.

I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
