Being on birth control and pro birth control can be so contradictory sometimes. Birth control has changed my life for the better, but the medical misogyny that comes with it has changed my life for the worse.

Getting the combined pill at 15 gave me some semblance of my life back, where I didn’t just dread my period 24/7 and dread the debilitating pain before and after. It made my cycle regular and manageable. But after sticking me on the pill, they never investigated me further and I only found out I have polycystic ovaries this year, 6 years later.

As my pain became worse and periods were more unbearable, with times I was bedbound or writhing on the ground, I needed more help. In January, I had an IUD fitted and my life changed immensely for the better! I can go on walks now, penetration is less agonising, my periods are all but gone. This isn’t to say my pain has disappeared, but it’s so much more manageable.

But to get here, to get this IUD I had to have it inserted with no prescribed pain relief. My legs shook so much they had to keep putting them back onto the bed and the pain was so excruciating that they had to keep me lying down afterwards because I very nearly fainted. The doctor himself said he didn’t think I would be able to make it through it, oh so many pats on the back for my bravery followed but it wasn’t bravery, it was survival.

Birth control has given me my life back, and it has given me a whole new level of medical trauma. I will both never be the same and never be the same.

the whole "kindness is punk" thing pisses me off cuz punk both as a political movement and as a music genre is founded in being angry and violent and deliberately pissing people off. kindness isnt rly up there. its just that what a lot of tumblr punks think is progressive and subversive is limited to white, sober, housed people missing a swing at a cop and being released from jail the next morning with a slap on the wrist. a lot of self proclaimed punks ive met still flinch away from homeless drug addicts and think incarceration means immorality and havent ever done direct action beyond signing .gov petittions

Being kind to a trans woman pisses people off, giving money to the homeless is a fuck you to the status quo, volunteering with rehabilitation programmes is fighting against the persecution of addicts. Kindness can be punk as fuck and not everyone can do direct action, some people can only sign petitions and put their money and time towards causes they believe in. They are still punk IMO.

the kindness is punk thing is purely a definition issue. its more like... punks can (and should) be kind too rather than "kindness is punk" because the definition/origin of the TERM punk (as a subculture/genre) is p much the opposite of that. its specifically about being loud angry annoying and obnoxious and above all pissing people off on purpose. it is deliberately controversial. donating and volunteering and being nice isnt rly under that umbrella (cuz its all state sanctioned lol) but it is absolutely something people can and should do. ppl online conflate the term "punk" with anything leftist or morally good and its more of a pet peeve than anything its not a big deal just annoying to me personally. for clarity there are issues with the punk community and i am not a punk but there are plenty of people i know and respect who are

was a completely unrelated issue and idk why i included it lmao. ig its a similar group of people - those who really inflate their bare minimum actions as radical so they continue to look as woke/punk/leftist as they want to be without actually... doing anything. even just dismantling their own privileged biases. obviously, there is no standard one-size-fits-all minimum amount of activism someone can do, many cannot do anything for various reasons. to each according to their need and from each according to their ability etc etc. but a lot of ppl online prefer the optics of radical action to the actual action itself. i think thats partly bc of this idea that in order to Make A Difference you have to be a front lines activist doing direct destructive action when in reality there are SO many things for people who dont want to/cant do that. would be fun to make a list of all the volunteering options like that honestly its interesting to me

Ah fair enough now that you’ve clarified I don’t disagree. I think your kindness can be part of you being punk but yeah, being loud and pissing people off is a requirement too. I don’t think you’re punk if you don’t put your money where your mouth is or help the people around you (within reason and to the best of your ability of course) that’s kinda the difference between being punk and being an asshole.
