I had to reblog instead of reply because my reply was too long BUT Goddamn that’s annoying!! I think you can edit the application for the library job though, if you have another person?? OOoor, if you can’t edit it, it’s still okay because they ask you in the interview if it’s okay to call those people, and you can say “no actually the situation has changed” or something and give them a different person to contact, if you have a different one. But ugh that’s horrible!

Well fuck them, that’s fully unprofessional and petty. I’d go with character references if you can’t think of any other work ones (I take it you’ve got someone at MBIE?) because that’s still a reference, and one that supports you as a person they want to hire.

Yeah, I figure that’s what I’ll need to do. At least with the library job there’s a million other ways I can prove that I’m the kind of person they want to hire, right?

I just found out one of my work references - the one I’ve been actively encouraging future employers to call for the best breakdown of my work ethic - have in fact been actively telling anyone that calls them not to bother with me. Because they “got some feedback from the last employer and don’t feel confident in representing me.”

FUCK.

So many jobs. I put them down as a reference on the librarian job, even! And I don’t think I can take that back, either.

This’ll be me for Beauty and the Beast, which I am assistant stage managing...

So a close friend told me I should express myself on my blog to feel better. I think she’s right. I don’t often use my Tumblr for personal stuff, if I use it at all. But frankly, I’ve had wine for dinner, and so this means expression.

Most of my mates know how important musical theatre is to me. I do it, my partner does it, we’ve had many secondary leads in the past and have been in shows together. We both adore it, it’s something we do, and do as a team. It’s a great love of ours and even more special because we get to share it together.

Last Friday we auditioned for a musical together. Last night (Monday), he got a phone call – they want him for a lead. I kept waiting, hoping my cellphone would ring, but it didn’t. I was called tonight with bad news: that I hadn’t been good enough to get in, not even as a general company member.

This has shaken me very badly. It’s a company that I’ve performed with numerous times in the past, even at highly competitive auditions, and I still got into the cast as a company member. I’ve been under the impression, from myself and from others, that over the last year and a half I’ve only been improving: getting secondary leads off my own skill, increasing my range and the like. I guess I took them too much to heart.

I am overjoyed for my partner. He deserves this lead, and I know he’ll be brilliant. But not being able to share in the experience with him has torn out my heart and left it bleeding. I know that if I get over the horror of rejection I will be on the stage crew for it, so at least I can see him shine onstage every night and be there for him regarding whatever he may need.

He’s just as disappointed as me that I won’t be there with him through rehearsals (which will last about six months). I’ll be left home alone while he goes out and does what we love on behalf of me, too.

In the slightly hungover light of day the shock’s faded into a deep disappointment. I am very upset about not getting in to this show, but I know I’ll get through. If nothing else I’ll get through it for him, to support his journey.
