ok I feel like I might be going crazy and I don’t want to start any sort of witch hunt so I’m not gonna ask for or give any names but have you seen any st/byler fanart recently that has raised suspicion about ai use? because I feel like it’s there and I can see it but no one is talking about it? i feel like it’s necessary to mention that I say this as an experienced digital artist and I feel like I’m working off of solid evidence that I’d bet on rather than paranoia or loose straws, but I also could always be wrong. also worth mentioning that the VAST majority of artists are innocent of this and even having conversations about it sometimes feels dangerous because I don’t want to contribute to a culture in which artists feel they constantly have to defend their work, as an artist myself it’s exhausting and fucking depressing and fanart is one of those rare beautiful things we still have in this monetised internet hellscape. Idk though I figured you might have thoughts considering this is happening in the fic world too, but what do you feel is the best approach in cases like this? It’s been on my mind so much recently

I have definitely seen art that has raised flags for me, because it shares a similarity with AI style art. I also know that “AI-style” art is similar to popular fanart styles. It’s like AI fic in this way, but I don’t really know how to identify it definitively the way I feel I can do (for the most part) with writing. I’m not as tapped in to the processes. It makes sense that this is the same reason you feel it’s easier to spot, and I share an equivalent helpless sort of frustration with you.

I guess it’s on writers to call out AI fic and on artists to call out AI art. It’s a complicated issue, but stolen valor doesn’t feel complicated in the least. I don’t understand feeling fear that your own fanworks will get accused of being AI in a “witch hunt” because I don’t use AI. However I really want to stay as far away from the “if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear” authoritarian mindset and policing each other panopticism.

This is a new problem. There’s no precedent, not yet. It’s different from other plagiarism, because the victim is the reader, not the LLM. With art, it feels even more dangerous to me. And I don’t feel confident enough in my own discernment to make any sort of public declaration that “x fanart was made at least partially with AI.” I just don’t.
