An open letter to President Elect Trump: Please do not forget about us

 Dear President Elect Trump,

      Congratulations on your victory last night. It is my fervent hope that you use the power acquired by your position for good. In all honesty I was a fan in the beginning; less so towards the end. None of that matters now. You are who the people of the United States voted for, and I respect the decision and outcome of the election and stand by that choice and with those who elected you.

      While Obamacare is far from perfect, the most important provision for my family has been the preexisting conditions clause. Without it, my family would never be able to get coverage; and if we did find coverage we could never afford it. You stated during your campaign that you would repeal Obamacare. If that is the case, please ensure that aspect remains. So many would be hurt by loosing that provision.

      My husband is self employed; the only health insurance we have access to is through the marketplace. I took some time to look over the new plans offered a few days ago and it took all of my strength not to start crying. And I would have had my girls not been in the room with me. My choices come from three companies. One that I've never heard of, another that is great insurance there's just no one near me who takes it, and the other is a big-named insurance company who is only offering HMO plans this year. I would be fine with that, I have no problem needing a referral to get a specialist. The problem lies in the fact that there arenospecialists I need on the plans currently offered.

      I was diagnosed this year with severe cervical spinal stenosis; I am only 41 years-old so this was a surprise to me. It took years to finally diagnose, and was only found while getting an MRI of my cervical spine to check for Multiple Sclerosis. Certain parts of my spinal cord are being pressed on in several areas by my discs, bone spurs, collapsing of my ligaments, etc...my MRI report was three pages long, so let's leave it at it wasn't a good report. The neurosurgeon I saw said surgery was imminent to prevent future damage and if I ever hoped to get back any of what I've lost it needed to be sooner than later. The problem was, he was in-network with my insurance provider, but none of the facilities where he performs surgery are. I met with this frustration over and over again with several separate issues this year.

      I spent almost four years trying anything and everything in my power just to find out what was wrong with me. I spent the first half of that time being told I was depressed and had anxiety that was causing my symptoms. After a year of trying every antidepressant on the market, none of which were effective, I stopped them all. They did not make me better. If anything I was worse than when I started. The last half was spent going from specialist to specialist, each having their own opinions as to what was going on.

The closest I came to a real diagnosis was from my last neurologist who diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and also with "Clinically Isolated Syndrome" which means I have had at least one episode of Multiple Sclerosis (I also have lesions on my brain found on MRI) but until the next MRI shows a new lesion my diagnosis cannot be confirmed. Problem is, I cannot afford another MRI and will have to wait. MS can't be taken lightly. The earlier the treatment the better.

      I am ok with waiting for another MRI, I do not relish the idea of a MS diagnosis. However, my spinal issues cannot wait. I have two baby girls who need me. They need me alive and well, and fully present for them and I have not been able to be the mother they need for such a long time it seems and it truly breaks my heart. The areas of my neck which are damaged are affecting certain nerves which are causing occipital and  Trigeminal neuralgia. Imagine walking around, going about your daily business when out of the blue, with no warning, someone sneaks up behind you and hits you on the head with a cattle prod. It is the most intense pain I have ever felt. It brings me to my knees when it hits. It can be isolated and happen once, or it can last days at a time. There is no medicine to treat it, surgery is the only option. People refer to these two neuralgias as "the suicude disease" and I can say that I understand. I've never wanted to take my own life but if I had to deal with this for a lifetime who knows what it would do to my mental state

      I must have this procedure if I want to have any hope of a normal life. I am in constant pain but have refused pain medicine, I do not need anything else possibly taking more of me away from my girls. I deal with the pain and go about my day as best as I can. My fear is that one wrong move and I could become paralyzed. My damage is that severe and in just the right areas to make that an unfortunate reality. It's bad enough that I tumble down the stairs about once a week because I loose feeling in my right leg.

        How am I going to have this surgery when there are no neurosurgeons on any plan of any of the three insurance carriers? There is one neurologist on the plan but she's off the plan at the end of the year. My family doctor who I found and adore will not take any of the offered plans which means weeks, if not longer, of trying to find a new primary care doctor and waiting for an appointment just to wait again to get a referral to a specialist. I have no problem with that, if only there were specialists to go to!

      I was in third year of my PhD program when I had to drop out suddenly and I've never quit anything, EVER. I had no idea what was wrong with me but I knew something was and whatever it was wasn't good. Now I have almost $100,000 in student loan debt (much more by now with interest and penalties) but cannot work to pay them back. By now I would have earned my PhD and would've (hopefully) secured a position where I could help take care of my family financially and repay my student loan. That wasn't in the cards for me. I spend my day now answering the dozen calls I get about my loans, despairing about what to do. I don't remember who said it but I thought it was hilarious and so true to my situation, "nothin' from nothin' equals nothin'!" That's me in a nutshell.

      My family and I have brainstormed ways to pay for the surgery myself and be able to choose the surgeon I feel is best for my particular case. I'm not sure I want an insurance company blindly choosing a doctor for me who will be working on my brain/spinal cord! The hospital said they would accept a payment plan...with 80% down. I wish I had 8% of it in my bank account right now! We are a middle class, hardworking family. We provide the necessities for our girls and ourselves but that's about as far as it goes. Even with the help of extended family, whom most of which are in the same financial boat we are in, we couldn't come up with a fraction of the near $100,000 needed to finally make me better. So I will sit and wait for another year to pass, hoping that the next brings with it insurance that will allow me to get better.

      Please, not only for myself, but for all the others who are going through the same ordeal, please help us. The longer I wait the more disability I face. I am only 41 years old and up until this process began I was an active, happy mom, student and wife. Now my kids worry about me falling and getting hurt when they're at school (they are 5 & 7, they should never have to have those worries!). My youngest girl is afraid to hug me and hold me around the neck. It breaks me heart. And you know what, I let her and tell her to do it, it will be ok. Not just because I love it, and oh, boy do I love it, but because she loves it and needs it!

      Having surgery will not fix everything medically that's going on with me, but it will at least remove the almost constant, teeth-clinching pain I'm in and hopefully keep me from falling down stairs and throwing water and cake plates, and spoons...at my family because my hand has a mind of its own now. At least it gives us something to laugh about!

      So my plea to you, is please do not forget about us, please fix this issue within our healthcare system so I can be the mother I need to be and be a productive member of society and hopefully be able to get a job and get the relentless student loan folks off my back!

      I wish you well as you embark on an amazing journey as President of the United States. Please do not forget about me, or all of those like me. We need you in our corner.

DIY Homemade Water Softener Recipe

Does your laundry come out of the wash a little stiff? You probably have hard water; here's a do-it-yourself, frugal recipe to solve that problem!

Using a labeled 1 gallon container combine:

1/2 pound arm and Hammer washing soda

1/4 pound 20 Mule team Borax

1 gallon of warm water

**Plastic milk jugs in gallon sizes that have been washed out work well for this.

 To use the water softener, add 1 cup of the solution to each load of wash water along with your normal laundry detergent.

What to do When Fabric Softener Leaves Spots on Your Clothes

What to do when your fabric softener leaves spots on your clothes

  If you find a greasy spot from your liquid fabric softener or dryer softener sheets on your clothes here's what to do.

 For liquid softener spots, take the item and rub with gently with diluted dish washing liquid and then rewash. You could also use a mild shampoo in place of the dishwashing liquid. The one thing not to do is to rub it with laundry detergent; it will not remove the spot and can even set the stain into the clothes.

 For spots left from fabric softener sheets rub the area with a wet bar of soap such as Dove, and then rewash.

 ***To avoid spots from fabric softener sheets in the first place, be sure to place the sheet on top of the clothes in the dryer rather than mixing it in and be sure to start the dryer immediately. And be sure not to use a fabric softener sheet if you're using the air fluff cycle without any heat.

 Another tip: Do not use dryer sheets on children's pajamas or any other garment labeled as flame resistant because this could reduce the flame resistance of the fabric. They are also not nontoxic so be sure to keep them out of reach of children and pets. Dryer sheets also contain perfumes that can irritate a baby's skin.

 First try running the nozzle under a forceful stream of hot water. Or you could try soaking it in a little rubbing alcohol. If these don't work carefully insert a sewing needle into the end that is clogged. Gently rock the needle back-and-forth then rinse the nozzle again with hot water. And of course always use care when working with an aerosol can.

Increase Your Pinterest Following and Repins with the Help of Board Booster!

I had never heard of Board Booster four months ago, How, I have no idea…it seems like everyone was in on this little secret but no one bothered to let me in on it! It has made an enormous impact on my Pinterest following and the rate of repins and exposure I was getting. I was surprised to find it was super easy to set up and made pinning faster, easier and more productive. When I started using Board Booster, I was averaging about 100 or so repins per week…fast forward four months later and I am averaging about 1,000 repins per month! I was pleasantly surprised to say the least! And, as an additional bonus I have increased my followers from less than 500 to 2700+ during that same time frame. I can't wait to see where my stats are in another four months! This is a pretty long post but I would like to really highlight the features I use most often to give you a sense of how the site works and the many benefits of each feature and how it can help you succeed on Pinterest.

The features I use most often are the Scheduler and Looping. The scheduler allows you to create secret boards, then add your pins to it and it will automatically repin them to the specified board for you. You can set up the number of pins you want it to add per day and during the hours you specify. Now that I have started using this feature, I rarely add a pin without putting it into a Board Booster secret board. I usually spend my mornings browsing Pinterest before my kids wake up so I am adding roughly 50 pins during that time (a time where lots of folks-the smart ones! -are still sound asleep…why I set my alarm for 4:30am is a mystery to me! It’s just so quiet and peaceful…)

Anyway…instead of having everything I have pinned show up in my followers feed at the crack of dawn, it spreads them out throughout the day so there are more people seeing them, increasing my rate of repins. Looping is another great feature. Looping allows you to repin pins you have added long ago that our newly added followers have never seen! We all have pins we have long forgotten about, hidden away deep within our boards and this is a great way to bring them back out into view without having to do it manually which can be quite time consuming…I know that all too well! This feature also keeps you from duplicating pins by removing the pin that has the lower number of repins and keeping the one with the most. You set the time frame and number of repins required to keep the pin.

They have added a new feature which I am in love with! It is called Pin Sourcing and it is fabulous! There are two options. The first, Board Monitor Agent, will scan any 3rd party board you follow and automatically add them to the board you specify. This is a big help with group boards, you can repin the contributions by the other members of the board automatically, saving you time and effort! This is also a great way to entice the other members of the board to repin your pins once they see you are taking the time and effort to repin what they have added.

The second feature is my absolute favorite! It is their Search Agent feature. This feature allows you to submit keywords and phrases into their system. The system will then monitor Pinterest for any new pins related to that search and add them to the board you specify. They look closely for viral pins, which is always a good thing to have on your boards! None of the pins they find for you with either feature are pins to public boards without your approval so no worries about some random, totally unrelated (or worse!) pin showing up in your feed. They are charging one penny per pin, I think that’s a price we would all be willing to pay to take some of the work out of searching for the hottest pins to add to our boards!

I love Board Booster for helping me keep track of my pins to the group boards I am a contributor to. I don’t have to worry about overwhelming the board with my pins or forgetting to add them all together, which I have been known to do…I set up these particular boards to add 3 pins per day to each board. As soon as I add a pin that would be appropriate for any of the group boards I go ahead and add it to my group board I have set up through the scheduler that way it is done and I don’t have yet another thing to remember to do! I have seen several boards boot folks off for adding way too many pins per day, this will keep you in good graces with the person who started the board and you don’t have to worry about putting people off by totally filling their feeds with your pins.

Board Booster offers two campaign features to help you with this, Random Campaigns and Scheduled Campaigns. They work similarly, one randomly adds the pins to the boards throughout the day and the other allows you to set the pins to post during certain hours.

I feel like I need to have my say on the looming DEA ban on Kratom. I will be stepping onto my soapbox now...

This is not a typical blog post for me. I usually write about crafts & what gifts you can get your mom for Mother's Day. But I have something to say, and this seems to be the best way to do it.  

 I am not a particularly political person, nor am I someone who will typically jump on my soapbox about something I know very little about. Until today.

I suffer from fibromyalgia, severe spinal stenosis of my cervical spine coupled with osteoarthritis and Clinically Isolated Syndrome which means I have an 80-90% chance of a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis within the next few years. I am no stranger to pain. I live with it every single day. Some days I have head pain that feels like someone sneaks up behind me and hits me with a cattle prod every five minutes, some days I can barely walk because my leg is numb but yet I can feel the cramps so bad it is all I can do not to crumple onto the floor and cry.

I do not take any prescription pain medicine, even though every doctor I have seen has been shocked when I tell them I am not prescribed any. Would I give anything to stop the pain, try any means necessary just for some relief? Absolutely. The reason I do not take pain medicine is simple. I do not want to become an addict. I have no reason to believe I would have a problem but I cannot risk it. I have two young daughters who need me. It seems like every other day I read another story about a woman like me who is suffering from chronic, intractable pain, who just wants it to stop. She is prescribed pain medicine, takes it as directed for a while but when it begins to loose it's effectiveness she ups the dose. Little by little until it is out of control. It scares the hell out of me. Life with a chronic illness is bad enough, I do not need to become addicted to pain medicine along with it.

This brings me to the issue I am having with our federal government, the DEA in particular. I had never heard the word Kratom up until about a month ago when a dear friend whose wife also suffers from fibromyalgia told me about it. It has helped her to live an almost normal existence which is difficult with a chronic illness. I am always the skeptic. I have taken countless herbal "remedies" and prescription medications only to be disappointed, or somehow made worse. Our friend was nice enough to give me a little just to see if it helped. I figured it couldn't hurt. I took it one day but was not really in any severe pain and really felt no effects; I would've been perfectly happy with a placebo effect! I put it away and thought no more about it.

Then I began doing some research about it. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. So many lives changed by a plant God put on our beautiful planet for us. A plant that has helped people who were on the brink of death from opiate addiction but were able to finally say goodbye to their demon, alcoholics who got clean,  depressed and anxious people living again, and those with chronic pain like myself getting out of bed and finally enjoying their lives.

I spent the better part of my afternoon that day reading thread after thread of stories like this. Were there a few posts from idiots looking for the best combo to mix it with to get high? Yep. But only a few. I knew a couple many years ago and the husband was hooked on just about everything. His wife said if he thought he could get high from her Premarin he would take it. There are always going to be these kinds of people out searching for their next new and exciting ride. The sad part is, they are going to find it. Legally or illegally. However, the people who were recounting their stories about Kratom were different. I can't remember the last time I saw so many "Praise Jesus!!" comments in one place. This one little plant that has helped so many.

That's when I happened upon a story from the Huffington Post about the DEA taking action to put this substance on Schedule I. My first thought was seriously? People are dropping like flies from heroin overdoses yet they are spending their very expensive time and effort on this?!? Apparently it is addictive, has no medicinal value and can harm public health. Really...

I couldn't help but think of the hundreds of 'legal' substances that fit that criteria yet I can run down to my local Walgreens or 7/11 and purchase them. I put my phone down and went on about my business, happy I hadn't had an amazing experience when I tried it...I wouldn't be able to get it so why bother. I didn't think anything else about it.

Until...we had our first cold front of the year over this past weekend. Temperatures dropped 20+ degrees and rain was coming. Just when I thought my pain couldn't get any worse it hit me like a freight train; the most severe, intense flare I have had since my fibromyalgia diagnosis. I couldn't even feel my constant neck pain over the new pain coursing through every nerve, joint and muscle in my body. It was like every symptom and every separate pain I have dealt with hit at once and it truly knocked me to the ground.

I took an extra dose of gabapentin. Nothing. Tylenol? Nope. Aleve or naproxen? Nada. I was afraid my liver was on the brink of combustion after dosing and redosing the entire day. Then I remembered I still had the Kratom and thought to myself, "What the hell could it hurt? I couldn't feel any worse than I do right now! If it makes me throw up maybe I'll forget about the pain for a little while!" I mixed a half teaspoon in a cup with a little water and downed it. It was not a particularly pleasant taste but at that point I would've drank mud if I thought it would help. I laid back down, still feeling totally defeated.

But you know what happened? Within 30 minutes, I got up. It wasn't a conscious thought, like "oh, Lord, the pain is gone! I can get up!" I just got up. And I started moving. It actually took me a little while to even realize the pain was better. Not completely gone, but more than manageable. I couldn't believe it. Honestly, I didn't really believe it. I figured the mega doses of Tylenol and  Naproxen had finally decided to kick in. I was able to do some household chores that an hour before would have been out of the question. After a while the pain began to settle back in and I spent most of the night tossing and turning trying to go to sleep while every single joint in my body felt like they were simultaneously being hit by a sledge hammer.

The next day was more of the same. I could barely get out of bed, but pain or no pain, my girls need me so I got up and suffered through the rest of the day. By the next day it was unbearable. I took another dose of Kratom and just like before, the pain eased. I even caught myself saying "Praise Jesus!"

That's when I realized I had found something that worked. Finally! But the real kick in the pants was when I realized I would not have access to it after September 30, 2016. That's when I decided to do my own research and see just how "dangerous" this plant really is.

According to the CDC, poison control received 263 Kratom related calls during 2015. During that same year, poison control took 12,594 calls over laundry detergent pods (about one every 45 minutes) and what about glow sticks, Mr. Clean & kid's bubbles? Are they being banned? No way.

How many people die every year from "legal" substances such as alcohol or tobacco? Alcohol related deaths-over 88,000 in 2015. Smoking? Approximately 280,000 deaths per year with another 42,000 due to second hand smoke. That is 1300 deaths a day due to a legal substance!  There have been approximately 15 reported deaths involving Kratom. What many fail to mention when they rattle off that statistic is that the vast majority of those individuals had other substances in their bodies. Well, if I take my "legally" prescribed Klonopin and chase it down with a case of beer I just might not wake up the next morning!

I'm not going to get into the ins-and-outs of Kratom, it's chemical profile, uses, etc...my focus here is on the seemingly illogical methods by which the DEA chooses which drugs to ban and which not to. I don't care if I never get another dose of the stuff. That's not the point. My point is, there are thousands if not more people using Kratom right now for legitimate reasons and come Friday, they will be criminals, put into the same category as meth users. This just does not sit well with me.

There comes a time when government needs to either back off or at least ask for consumer and researcher's input before making decisions that could possibly affect thousands of individuals.

I guess I will end my rant now. Please, do your own research and come up with your own opinion. I'm not saying that I am right. I just feel like I need to say these things. If not for me, for the thousands of others who will be lost on Friday, September 30th. It breaks my heart.

Please, write, email or call the 51 members of congress who are trying to stop the DEA or at least get a fair hearing and process before it is automatically listed as schedule I. They deserve our thanks. They see the benefit and the good that can come from this God sent plant and they see what we are not all junkies looking for a quick fix. We are people in pain. We are people fighting off the demons of addiction. WE could be YOU someday. You would want the same thought and consideration.
