how to tell you're living in a dystopia: working your contracted hours and meeting your job description is considered "quitting"
"But helping poor people should be voluntary."
And even when it is, people still have a problem with it.
i love you people who hold doors i love you people who let others pass on the driveway i love you people who make funny faces at babies i love you people who pick up litter i love you people who say please and thank you i love you people patient with service workers i love you people who share an umbrella i love you people who are casually kind

i need y'all to get that headlines about climate change are supposed to spur people to action, and scientists sound the alarm because humanity still CAN do something, not because it's inevitable and Literally Everyone Will Die
Do NOT let people let you forget that our world is still as habitable as it is today because of the work of scientists and activists of the past, that things would be MUCH WORSE now if people hadn't acted.
Remember the ozone hole? Remember that? You haven't heard about that in a little bit huh? THAT'S BECAUSE WE FIXED THE PROBLEM. If no one had done anything, there would be holes in the ozone layer all over the place and we would be slowly irradiated by the sun. THE EARTH WOULD HAVE BEEN UNINHABITABLE BY MIDCENTURY.
Every time you repeat the line that "Unless we end capitalism worldwide, there's literally nothing we can do to help climate change!" the people that devoted their lives to saving species that would be gone now, preserving habitat that would be obliterated now, and fixing problems that would have been well along the way to making us extinct by now beam psychic rays of contempt in your direction
“the world is not a pleasant place to be without someone to hold and be held by.” ― Nikki Giovanni
Fun history facts: One of the 31 people arrested at Stonewall on June 28th 1969 was American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, who was not at the Stonewall Inn at the time and was cis & straight as far as I'm aware. He'd been eating dinner at a nearby restaurant when he noticed a riot happening, said "Well I suppose I should go see what the fuss is about," stepped outside, and immediately started throwing bricks at the cops.
Important update on abortion rights in Texas: the Bexar county sheriff said he won’t prosecute anyone who gets an abortion
Saw someone in the tags saying please don’t be fake so just so we’re clear:
It’s worth noting that San Antonio is the second biggest city and has the third largest metropolitan area in the state. Bexar county takes up majority if not all of the city. This impacts at least 1.4mil people. This is a very good thing the sheriff is doing.
Alt text is added to the images
(ID: two screenshots, one from a news article in the Houston Chronicle and the other from Facebook.
The Chronicle is headlined “Bexar County Sheriff will not ‘persecute’ San Antonio women who have abortions”, followed by a subline that reads “Salazar says it’s none of his business”. There is a photo of the sheriff in uniform with his cowboy hat in hand as he speaks to the press.
The Facebook post is from Sheriff Javier Salazar and reads
“I’m the Sheriff of Bexar County, but also a Dad of two beautiful and intelligent young women. As their Dad I will defend my daughter’s ability to do what they feel is right with their bodies and to love whomever they choose. As their Dad, I have no control over their adult bodies. As their Sheriff, it is absolutely none of my business. I will not persecute Texas women or anyone else pursuing those same rights.
Shame on the Supreme Court and the bureaucrats in Washington D.C. and Austin who are attempting to impose their own supposed morals on others. They will not use my badge or the color of my office to do so. My job is chasing predators, rapists, and human traffickers, not someone exercising a right.
If it’s religion those career politicians would like to enforce, then they should remember that there are many other commandments in scripture that they themselves have very publicly chosen to ignore.
If it’s truly about protecting children, how about starting with the ones in our schools?”
The text is then followed by a picture of the sheriff with his daughters and wife.
End ID.)

(tags: #also this is one of the 10 largest cities in the country #THE COUNTRY)
7th biggest, to be exact! Also the city of council of Austin is putting forth legislation to decriminalize abortion in the city, affecting just under 1mil people.
Austin and San Antonio are about an hour’s drive a part, with the surrounding metro areas of both cities having a combined population of about 4.8 million people (2.28 mil and 2.55mil, respectively), providing two abortion havens of some type for the time being
Majority of Texans live within the Texas Triangle, so it provides a small sliver of hope for about a 1/4 of those that do live in the region. Hopefully El Paso and the other two major cities follow, I’m especially wanting Houston to take action
In related news, a lower court blocked the trigger law Texas had in place, reinstating the 5 week ban over the total ban that was going to go into effect this month
The Travis county (Austin), Dallas county, Ft Bend county (Sugar Land), and Nueces county (Corpus Christi) DAs also said they will not prosecute abortion cases.
Curious that Harris County (Houston) DA, Kim Ogg who is a Democrat btw, has said she will prosecute cases. But, Fort Bend (where I grew up) is a Houston suburb that's a 10-15 minute drive from Downtown Houston and they said they will not.
Not to make this sound like "go comment on fanfic if you want more," but "go publicly and loudly praise the good things if you want them to keep happening." I cannot express to you that the only people who show up to say anything about school curriculum 98% of the time in my district want it mostly wiped out in favor of white supremacy with a hug. (Pretty sure that's Dena Simmons' phrase for SEL, not mine.) Be loud. Be supportive. Show up on your local levels. Write to people doing good work on other local levels so that they feel like it's still worth taking a stand, especially if that stand is public and political. Whether it's in writing or in local committees and definitely at the polls: show up.
young adulthood is extremely lonely but also wildly freeing. i’ve gotten coffee at three different cafes today
Guy came up to me and yelled so loudly that it made me jump. All caps isn't enough I need wordart to describe how loud he was. This was not "I can't tell I'm being loud" this was "In another life I was the town crier" loud. Hear ye hear ye loud. He was friendly, but holy crap
