Charlotte held her tongue and listened attentively. That Jenny had… experience cleaning up magic was intriguing, to say the least. Especially since she was the one to bring up trouble caused by magic. Charlotte glanced over, quickly gauging Jenny’s expression to see just how serious of a question this was. “Jenny Du, are you implying I’m a troublemaker?” She asked, playfully scandalized.
“That’s right,” Charlotte confirmed, letting out a short laugh at the mention of a pager. She hadn’t seen one of those outside a hospital in… eons. “August 28th, I’ll give you my number. Then you can call me or beep me if you wanna reach me.” Her reply was just as serious–an accomplishment, as she refrained from giggling at her own reference. “It’s their daughter, mostly. We went to high school together and she, uh, didn’t quite graduate out of the mindset.” It surprised Charlotte how easily she was able to tell a relative stranger these things. It was as refreshing as it was dangerous. Now it was her turn to give Jenny a pointed look. “But you didn’t hear that from me.”
Now that was a cool job, Charlotte thought. “You might want to try some of the gyms and see if they’re looking for any new instructors?” She tucked that information away for later, knowing full well how out of practice she was with self defense. In her time back home, she’d fallen back on old habits and relying on magic. Complacency was more dangerous than she imagined, and the weight of it grew heavier with Jenny’s question.
After a moment, Charlotte finally responded. “I don’t know.” She said truthfully. Her eyes kept moving, scanning the flow of traffic, and briefly flickered over to Jenny. What she wanted to say leapt to her tongue, I honestly don’t know. It doesn’t feel like my being here has made any impact on why I came back in the first place. I think about leaving every day.
Instead, she said: “But it’s been fun catching up with old friends, I haven’t seen some of these folks in years. Once you get settled in you should come out with us some time, it’s always a blast. And hey, maybe you’ll find some new clients!”
“My finely honed instincts say yes.” Some Elders painted the Kingsleys to be a troublesome family, some pointedly suggested to her not to take them as her charges. The same sentiment she communicated to them was echoed to Charlotte. “I can handle a troublemaker,” she said offhandedly, not quite catching up to the intimacy the sentence implied until after she said it.
The Kim Possible reference went over her head and was overpowered by the idea of already getting Charlotte’s number. Jenny beamed unabashedly. “Stuck in high school and treats you like it, got it.” It made Jenny curious as to what Charlie was like in high school, if she had been the quiet girl that read in the library or gregarious and on the yearbook with a large circle of friends. Jenny just barreled in and asked. “Were you in her group of friends? Or what group of friends were you in? You know, if you had to define your high school experience by a Breakfast Club trope.”
“I prefer to stay freelance with my classes, so I can pick my schedule.” Usually Jenny just taught her charges, but she was known to take on other students - never for pay. It just made her feel good to know she was making someone else stronger, maybe wiser. “Besides, I’m content to enjoy Edgewood - for now. You’re the local, you’ll have to show me the best spots.”
Jenny was shocked at the honesty that bled through Charlie’s simple I don’t know. Her eyes stayed locked on her charge’s face while she continued to speak, softening. Jenny could only imagine what Charlie had been going through since Jeremy Danver’s disappearance. “I hope you find what you’re looking for here,” Jenny said in a low voice, returning Charlotte’s honesty with some of her own.
“Thank you,” Jenny’s voice was emphatic. “For giving a ride to a stranger.” The whitelighter paused, the gears in her head visibly turning. “But you probably shouldn’t do this again, giving rides to strangers is ill advised.” They started to get closer the apartments as she spoke, her shoulders dropping in disappointment. It always felt like she needed more time, but Jenny tried to remind herself there would be more opportunities to be with Charlie.
