THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (Movie Review)
Andy Sachs recently graduated from Northwestern University and aspires to become a journalist. However, she lands the magazine job that million girls would die for. As she tries to please her boss, Miranda Priestly, she realized that her personal life is now hanging by a thread.
Let us first discuss the background of the film and its settings. Since the story is about “a career-ladder who survives the torture of the snow queen”, it is superficial to choose New York City as the main location. Some important scenes especially the last parts were taken in Paris, France because the place itself agrees to the motif of the story which is “fashion oriented and glamorous”; and as we all know Paris is the fashion capital of the world where expensive pieces from head to toes are displayed everywhere.The locations also played a role on the development of the problem because it is where the issue occurred.
Moving on, the following problems in the story are solved in a very distant time frame. This is probably because the director wants to maintain the mood of the story which is comic/dramatic so the audience won’t get bored. It is a clever decision to let it be that way so the excitement will keep up. The movie also uses linear-sequencing pattern and no flashbacks nor foreshadowing to let the audience catch up with the movie events.
Over-all the film makes a clear execution of its essence and discusses its lessons in a comic/dramatic manner. The movie simply tells us that not all amazing things can give us happiness. In addition, the way Andrea solved the problems was a product of grace under pressure, so I can really say that the movie did a great show of morals and values.
