Response to Spatial Observation Post 1
I have chosen the posts “Got Books?” “Rose Garden”, “One-Five Oasis”. “Got Books” was taken in the library, and this space represents the life of a college student. The “Got Books” post got my attention because of the way it was taken. I really liked that it represented what a library looks like very well. Many people see a library as a quite place with many books, not to mention students studying and preparing presentations with other classmates. Since our time is spent reading books, analyzing articles and obtaining research, I find that most students have learned to call this place home. The library shows how much we are all connected as college students. The library brings about commonalities of college a student. Simply looking at this image, we see hundreds of books, stories, and sources of information. I understood why this space would be chosen over others, due to our similarity of spaces. I feel as if my church space closely resembles a library space, because both places carry a deeper meaning. Also, like a church, a library serves many purposes for others, but also can serve as a place of concentration and reflection, which is similar to Foucault’s writing, where he talks about spaces and how they are interpreted. Also, Foucault explains how spaces can be the result of a combination of spaces, and I think this image depicts that perfectly.
Next is the One-Five Oasis, which is a picture of a backyard scene. This scene captures the beauty in nature. It is a relaxing, non-distracting, and calming environment that will help with ideas. When I fist saw this scene, I felt relaxed by the pool in the back. The trees let the sunlight shine through ever so eloquently and add a natural feel to the scenery in general. I favor this image because is depict the simple fact that we may not always have to go to a scenic place to experience the beauty of nature. Some of the greatest things are right in front of us. Also, compared to my image, I found little commonalties. My house of worship and this backyard only share a couple attributes, one being that they both bring about a mood or feeling when entered, and also the fact that more than one person can experience this space. Unlike the backyard, my image showcases a space that demands a certain attitude or behavior. I appreciate the simplicity and beauty of this image, and acknowledge the scenery.
This last post depicts the Rose Garden here on our Chico State Campus. With walkways throughout the entire garden, it is a great place for students to experience nature in a new way. I compare this space to the backyard that we talked about earlier; because of the role that nature plays. I also see a large amount of freedom in these images due to the fact that they both reside outdoors. This space contrasts my space by not having the boundaries that the church has. I find that all three of these spaces have the similarities and differences, but all depict spaces open for multiple purposes and interpretations.
