when jervis is not mentally well, he’ll start rhyming his words effortlessly in his speech.

jervis tetch goes by the mad hatter and typically kidnaps blonde women to be his alice and play into his fantasies. when they refuse to play the part or don’t play it well enough- he is susceptible to lapses of anger. 

he has murdered a few people but his mind blocks out the traumatic events and he has a strong reaction to being shown the horrible things he has done. 

to further escape from reality, jervis has been known to take drugs and induce his own hallucinations

now, recently out of arkham. he’s been doing a little better and is trying to stay out of wonderland. attempting not to drink any tea, or fall for any more alice’s. he lives his life in new york city, working as a real hatter. selling his hats from his place and taking his medication. trying not to inevitably slip.

       "They wouldn’t give you the same thing twice.“ Instead, Jervis would have been prescribed a higher dose and been left with three pills instead of four. The fourth pill must have done something, but the hatter was too mad to tell. Jervis Tetch was exactly the kind of patient Dr. Crane loved (if love was what one could call it). His brain was so much more interesting than the lousy borings who walked down the street every day. Insanity held a beauty, an unpredictable factor that sanity lacked. Leaning against the metal back of the chair he was sitting in, Jonathan pulled his glasses off his face. Using the inside of his shirt, he wiped off a smudge before resting them back on the bridge of his nose. "No, this isn’t therapy. I’m just curious. Nothing more.”

“You don’t know that! They’re so cruel! They would! They just want to mess with me. And I don’t want to be messed with.” He argued with an annoyed huff. Watching as his friend calmly went about cleaning his glasses. Jervis couldn’t help but fidget in his own chair. Toying with the cuff his his wrinkled shirt. Bouncing his leg as he did so. As if he was full of energy and he needed to get it out somehow. His face was still red with anger at the idea Crane might have been trying to psychoanalyze him or give him therapy. When he said it wasn’t therapy, Jervis glared at him for just a moment more before letting out a huff and crossing his arms. “Fine! If it isn’t therapy, I suppose we can keep talking! Just know, Mr. Crane. I do not want any therapy. I don’t need it because I’m sane now. Understand?”

☆ﾟ*·ﾟHOLDING ONTO HIM tightly, Edward couldn’t help the excitement that built up inside him from seeing his friend. There were very few people that he would willingly hug like this, and Jervis, was one of them. But Jervis was a very special person to Edward. As he heard him stammering, calling him a flirt, he couldn’t help the laugh that escaped his lips, a laugh full of a little bit of embarrassment. He hadn’t expected to flirt with him like that, or enjoy it, but he felt no need to be embarrassed. “It’s been a while, do you blame me?” Edward didn’t give people attention like this, but there was something very special about the way he felt comfortable around him, and the way that he could freely smile around him. Bouncing inside, he was even happier than he’d been just a second ago. What could be better than seeing an old friend that made him smile and seeing the beautiful creation he’d made? “I do? It’s going to wow me, isn’t it? You’re impeccable, so why wouldn’t it be?” Edward stated, biting the corner of his lip, trying not to blush too much. 

“Normally you are the one wanting to be showered in affection and praise, and here you are showering me! I’m so very lucky. Lucky, indeed.” Jervis pointed out with a smile on his face. He’d taken notice while in their rogue meetings ( on the rare occasion that he was lucid enough to take notice of anything at all ) that Edward enjoyed being the smartest one in the room. He seemed to always want to be told that too. Even if it was subtle, like the rest of the group being unable to solve his riddles or agreeing to one of his plans. It felt rare- at least to Jervis- that Ed might compliment someone the same way he was complimenting him now. So here Jervis was, feeling incredibly special. “Of course! I’m a Hatter after all, my dear. I take great pride in my work!” He said before walking over to his table and plucking the hat off of it to show to his friend. Keeping it behind himself as he walked over to him. He stood firmly in front of him, craning his neck to look up at him. A smile stretching across his face before finally, he moved the hat from behind himself and showed him his new creation. “What do you think! Beautiful isn’t she?”

“no no. I figured that Darling. But why new york?” she tried to explain to him. She could tell he was very proud and smiled, following him deeper into the apartment. She knew  looked at the stickies, heart pulling at the little statements all them. He was trying but somehow, it was still heart breaking. “And what will we be having dear?” she asked as she sat down at the table.

“Oh! Why didn’t you just say so? Gotham was quite sad after they let me out of Arkham. I noticed quickly that it was missing a great deal of my friends. So, I set off to find you all here. Although, I must say! It took me some time to find you.” Jervis said, “You weren’t hiding from me, were you?” He asked as he started setting the table. He pulled out some hot chocolate powder. “Hot Coca, I even have tiny little marshmallows to go in it! What a treat!”

“That’s such a shame, one should always be able to enjoy the small pleasures in life, that’s how I’ve lived this long I think” Oswald mused watching the other take in the scene he’d created for him. Of course, Jervis was always a fun friend to have, the male at the best of times was harmless but once unleashed in Wonderland he had the potential to do such damage. “Ahh that’s right, well shoot my whole plan to surprise you seemed to have gone awry” he pouted a bit moving to his little penglet that he was able to start eating his sweet. “How about it’s just a cup of tea between friends?? Surely there can’t be anything wrong with that Jervis?  You don’t need to be him to gain my friends you know? I rather like your new outfit by the way.”

“But if one indulges too much in one’s pleasures, one may start to go mad.” Jervis replied with a sigh. Fighting it was exhausting. Terribly tiresome and the Cheshire Cat had once said that all the best people were mad. So why even fight it? Why was he without his hat? He could hardly recall a time before it. His memories felt foggy. He was a scientist. He knew that much. He discovered something horrible and had to escape it but he’d been away for so long now that he wasn’t sure anymore what it was he ran from. “Your plan was very kind indeed and your friendship is not only appreciated but also reciprocated.” Jervis told him, his voice softer then it normally was. The smell of the tea that he’d poured for himself was so very tempting. He let out the sigh he didn’t know he was holding in. “Thank you, I quite like it myself. So, enough of me talk! Let’s talk about you! How have you been, dear Penguin And who might I add, is this little hare? He’s much too small to be the REAL March Hare.”

Jim’s eyes narrowed as Jervis chanted his name, a soft sigh leaving his lips as one hand came up to scrub through his hair. “I really feel like I do,” he said dryly, though he moved further into the room. “Thank you for inviting me into my own office. You’re a real gentleman.” He didn’t sit down even as Jervis gestured to the chairs in front of his desk, instead standing behind them with his arms folded across his chest. He rolled his eyes as Jervis went on, looking over at him. “Yeah, what do you want?” he said. “I sincerely doubt I can help you without a degree in psychology, but out with it, I guess.” He tugged at the paperwork trapped under Jervis’s feet. “And since you won’t get the hell out of my office, at least get your feet off my desk.”

“You’re welcome! I do get that a lot. Believe it or not!” Jervis said with a smile stretching across his lips. “Oh you don’t need a degree,” Jervis said with a swipe of his hand as if he was fanning off the very idea of it. “Not to help little ol’ me. You see... of my delusions, I am free. No more pesky insanity.” Jim asked him to get his feet off his desk and he let out a small, “Oh.” Before doing as he asked, taking them off and instead standing up to try and reach his height. Still a little too short- despite the heels of his boots adding length to him. Perhaps a hat... No, Jervis! NO HAT! NO TEA! He placed the tea in front of Jim instead of in his own hand where it was a deadly temptation. Leaning in over the desk to get try and get a bit closer. “Have some tea, would you like some tea while I plead?” He asked. “You see, Jimmy. I haven’t done a thing wrong! Not in months since I was let out of that dreadful place! And I think I hear Batman. Walking around my apartment floor! Pow, pow, pow! Go his footsteps in the night and I can’t SLEEP! Might you please just... tell him to stop watching me? Since you’re friends and all. I’ll promise to be a good Hatter!” He held his ears for emphasize on how loud the steps were in his apartment.

As soon as Jim opened his office door, even before he turned on the lights, the scent of tea assaulted his nose, so fresh that he could see the faint curl of steam caught in the watery, early morning sunlight streaming in through the high window. A faint huff left his lips. “What do you want, Jervis?” he said, flicking the light switch up and bathing his small office with the tepid glow of fluorescents. “How did you get in here?” The china cup sat in the center of his desk, with the Hatter himself not far from it. “I hope you have a good reason for lurking in my office, otherwise there’s a cell downstairs with your name on it.”

“Jim, Jim, Jim...” Jervis spoke. He couldn’t help but repeat the name. It was just too much fun not to. Picking up the spoon that he’d laid next to the cup. He plopped it into the cup and started stirring it. He really shouldn’t drink it. In fact, he shouldn’t be here. “You needn’t stand at the doorway. Do come sit.” He said, gesturing to the chairs in front of Jim’s desk before making himself a little more comfortable. Leaning back, cup in hand and placing his feet on the Commissioner’s paperwork. “I have a problem I need solving and I figured calling you wouldn’t work. So here I am, Jim dear! In the flesh. Hoping to ask you a question and for you to answer it without too much of a fuss.”

“Mhm.” Bridgit had known Jervis long enough to become USED TO his rhyming but that didn’t mean she enjoyed it, not at all. It was more like she had become accustomed due to prolonged exposure to the curse of his rhyming. Though not an actual curse, THOSE could be broken. “You do know I’m not currently in the supervillain buzz, right?”  Though possibly that was why he had called her, that and she wouldn’t destroy his place without a valid cause. She looked around, snooping for an answer (aware that she wasn’t the best person for this investigation as well). “Hm…” She looked around, but found nothing to prove. “I could stay here tonight,” She offered. “Keep an eye?” God knows Jervis got a lack of sleep as it was, he shouldn’t be adding to it. Or more like subtracting. 

“You’re not?” He asked, bringing his hand up to chew on his nails. “Oh, no. Oh, dear me. I didn’t mean to drag you back in... I just wanted a second opinion.” The usual person he’d call for this kind of reassurance wasn’t picking up. Which was typical of Crane. he was known to be rather busy. He also figured that if he was housing the Batman without knowing. Firefly would have an easier time dealing with it than the rest of the rogues would. He’d never tried killing the bat with fire before. Surely, that might work. “Could you?” Jervis perked up immediately at her offer. “That would be delightful! Thank you, thank you!”

☆ﾟ*·ﾟIF THERE WAS one thing that The Riddler liked to be known by, other than his fantastical riddles, it was the fantastic wardrobe he was constantly seen in. But now, his favorite hat was getting a bit old, and he needed one that would showcase how much he’d changed. Edward was a lot different than he’d been in the last few years. After hearing about the best hat maker in the city, a villain, no doubt, he knew it would be the best option. However, when he learned of the name, Edward knew that no one else could make his hat better. This man singlehandedly was one of his favorite people, let alone villains. As he sauntered over to his place, a bright smile on his face, he couldn’t wait to see what the hat looked like. He wanted it to be different, unique, and special like he thought he’d become. Knocking on the door, he grinned brightly, practically swaying from side to side with excitement. “Jervis!” Edward squealed, bouncing up and down like an idiot. He opened his arms wide for a hug, not caring if he didn’t want one. “It’s been too long, really. And might I say, you’ve gotten even more handsome.”

Jervis let out an excited laugh as soon as he laid his eyes on Ed but he wasn’t expecting the sudden hug. Leaning into the affection he so rarely got, he wrapped his arms around the other and considered not letting go for a good long while. Leaning his head on his shoulder. “Oh! My! You- you flirt.” He stammered. Compliments were just as rare as physical affection. For whatever reason, most people kept their distance from Jervis Tetch. Whether it be for the crimes he’d committed or for the way he genuinely acted. It saddened him to some extent. He preferred being around people to being alone. Even more so if they actually liked him. (Though, that wasn’t a requirement. Just a lovely bonus!) After a long moment, he pulled back and gave his friend a grin that might even rival the Cheshire Cat’s. “Do come in, I just completed your hat. I must say you have impeccable timing! It’s one of your many talents.”

       “I’m not sure.” He admitted honestly. It would have been a lie to say anything else. When Jonathan had been released from Arkham he hadn’t received any sort of rehabilitation certificate as proof of his sanity. Maybe it was because he was conscious of his insanity, not living in a fantasy that his insanity was sanity. It was a coping mechanism that he had not resorted to. Being aware of his insanity had actually been useful. He was able to act sane thanks to his expertise in psychology. It was like a light switch her could flip on and off when it was needed. It was the reason he had been able to hide in plain sight at Arkham Asylum for so long, until he was inevitably caught. It had always been a matter of when, not a matter of if. “Two blue can do two different things.” Crane replied. “The color doesn’t matter so much as the ingredients. Unless you’re afraid that they prescribed you two of the same pills and made you think they’re different. Is that a fear you have?” The man asked, a pleased shiver running through him. 

“Well, I suppose you might be right. I may be frightened that they’re giving me the same thing twice. You know how damaging that could be to the mind... They look the very same so, I just thought-” Jervis felt himself sink into the chair he was sitting in. This was starting to feel oddly familiar. There was an itch somewhere in the back of his brain that needed to be scratched. Luckily without a hat, one could reach the back of their head a bit better. But even scratching the back of his head physically didn’t bring back the memory he was trying to recall. Why did this feel like something he didn’t like or want all of a sudden? He was trying to have a chat with his friend but the way he was speaking felt so- OH! “Jonathan Crane! Don’t tell me you’re trying to give me therapy right now!” He accused. “How dare you!”

Oswald knew he spoiled Jervis a bit more than most but then again it was hard not too when it came down to it. He was rather kind to Oswald and he had simple loves which were easy to give into without too much issue. He may have stolen Little Peter knowing that his Dad would be a bit busy to pick him up after school so a little cake tea party sounded like a great idea to the boy. “Of course I did, You’ve made the trek to New York City to join us, You deserve a proper welcome.” He replied smiling softly “Do you like Jervis? I’ve ensured to have plenty of treats I know you like, I also hope you don’t mind the company. My little Penglet also deserved a little treat.”

“That I did... Gotham felt different when I was freed. The colours weren’t vibrant and the sun wasn’t shining- not the way it outta been. Nothing was right. Not even the grass was green.” He explained. Jervis took a few more steps into the room, closer to the set table. With all it’s various wonders and treats. Maybe it was just him, but it looked like even the cakes were marked with the words ‘eat me’. The cute little kid (who looked oddly familiar) was dressed as the March Hare, further making it all seem more and more like Wonderland. Just one cup couldn’t hurt. One tiny sip? One little drop on his tongue? “I do like... I do. There’s just one small little issue.” Jervis explained. Bringing his hands up to play with a few strands of his long wild hair. “I’m not supposed to be him right now. I’m supposed to be a man brand new.” He said before taking his seat at the head of the table and pouring himself some tea anyway.

Zatanna had been surprised to receive an invitation to tea at her apartment. Not many knew where it was, not because it was a secret but she commonly met with her friends at the Tower. She was always receiving invitations to events, it came with the territory of being a celebrity. But this one had caught her eye, because the door man said it came with a white rabbit. Immediately she knew who it was from. She went to the address listed, knocking on the door and waiting for him to answer. “Of course I came love, but I am a bit confused.” she said not expecting to see him in the city. “what are you doing in here?” she questioned.

Jervis reached forwards and pulled her into a quick and sudden hug before leaning back. His hands still on her shoulders. “Here? My dear, Zatanna. I live here. Don’t lets be silly.” He replied quickly. “Anyway, do come in. I’ll set the table for the two of us. We have much to catch one another up on! Much, indeed! I even cleaned for you!” Letting go of her, he gestured for her to walk in. His place was in shambles with sticky notes plastered all over it. Each one reminding him not to drink the tea or to wear the hat. It was all a slippery slope after all and he was trying not to get caught up with another Alice.

     “What are you doing, Jervis? Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Selina shook her head as she drew closer to the edge of the rooftop. She’d put money on him making it to the next roof by jumping before she’d put any faith into that piece of ply wood, but she supposed that not everybody was in the habit of leaping across rooftops as she so often did. “Dare I ask what you’re running from?” Himself, most likely.

“You don’t sound like you a smidge of faith in me. A smidge!” He told his old friend with a bit of a pout. “Can’t you see that I made a bridge?” Jervis replied, gesturing to the plywood in one dramatic motion before taking his foot off of it and planting himself more firmly on the rooftop next to her. She asked what he was running from and he glanced at the the door he got to the roof by. “The jabberwocky.” He whispered the word like it were a curse, “I’m not in Wonderland and yet it followed me here! That or it’s the Bat? Either way, there’s malice in it’s steps, my dear. I’m sure about that!”

Taking a swig of liquid courage before tossing the bottle to the side, Jervis weighed his options again. On one hand- he could risk going out the front door of his building and bumping into whatever was walking the halls of his apartment building last night. And on the other. He could cross the large piece of ply wood that he put together to connect the roof of his building to the next. The latter seemed a lot less dangerous when he took into consideration who that person could have been. “One step,” He said lifting his foot and placing it down onto the wood. “Two step-” Suddenly he heard something from behind him. The soft thud of someone landing on the rooftop and Jervis sprung around in shock. Catching the gaze of a cat he knew well. “Selina!”

Jervis found himself humming along to a tune his record was playing. Reaching up with his entire body to dust off the framed certificate from Arkham. What a wonderful life he was having on the other side of the looking glass. Tucked away from the tempting temptations of Wonderland. Perhaps it wasn’t reality itself that he found intolerable but instead the world of research science. Chemicals and synopsis and rabbits didn’t quite compare to the magic of creating hats. Speaking of which. A delicate knock tapped on his door and he jumped, dropping his duster onto the floor with the rest of his piles of stuff. Quickly running to answer it. Nearly tripping as he did. Opening the door, his eyes widened at the sight of her. “You came, you really came! Oh, what a treat!”
