BRUCE IS COMING IN SEPTEMBER.
Returning to this, because it helps, always. And it is simply the most stunning performance Iâve ever seen.
Hands down my favorite poetry slam performance piece. Loyce Gayo is breathtaking.
I tell you I am happy, and you tell me you are happy, and I am told Iâm supposed to hate you, since hate is the body that stays when love leaves, but by now that skin has a new name, and if the story of us begins in summer, then Iâm the one who left. Iâm the one who buried everything that had a face.

Cedar Crest College: Emphasizing Womenâs Leadership
Germ U
âIn a time where other womenâs colleges are facing decisions like becoming co-educational or closing their doors forever, President Carmen Twillie Ambar insists that Cedar Crest is going strong. As a leader in womenâs education, it is no surprise that the institution encourages leadership development in their students.â
A friendly reminder from Daniel Gurwin: Youâre Doing Just Fine.Â
I think I need this in my life.

Skipping the Burns?
The Husband and I are supposed to attend our friend's annual Burns Supper tonight. Normally, this would make me happy because a) we rarely have outings together without the boys, and b) I fucking love a good Burns Supper. Seriously. The poetry, the whiskey, the haggis (OK, just a pea-sized portion for me because I can't quite get past the appearance), the cock-a-leekie soup, neeps & tatties...it's just glorious. It's also now the only time we see many of our friends from HS since everyone has scattered.
However, now that we have kids, I feel guilty for stay out late. I feel guilty that someone has to stay up late to watch over the boys. At the Burns Supper, I feel guilty for having to ask folks to move their cars so that we can leave (it's a rather crowded, small lot).Â
So, I'll likely try to talk The Husband into staying home tonight, which may or may not turn into an Issue. I could just tell him to go, and I'll stay home to be with the boys (and, honestly, to grade because ALL THE GRADING this week).
Aging Mush Brain
Today was the first day I looked at my hair and thought Shit. I need to make an appointment for a color to cover this gray.
How am I almost 40?
I've noticed lately that my brain shuts down by 5pm. Not so convenient when I still have grading, prepping, reading, or writing to do in the evening. I made a note to Google ways to make my brain work again. Maybe I need to eat more vegetables. Or get more sleep.
For almost five years, I've been sleeping in 2-3 hour segments at night. Yay, motherhood. The boys sleep through the night now, mostly, but I don't. I wake up, not quite functional enough to do work, but functional enough to start stressing about things, mourning a cat that died six years ago, having arguments in my head, and generally just not very productive things.
Which, really, all points toward --> slow down. Stop teaching so much. Start living more.
Not going to happen in the Semester of Teaching 24 Credits Because I'm Afraid If I Say No They Won't Ask Me Back.
But this fall...maybe.

Snow Day and Things
One of my goals this year was to not stress over ALL THE THINGS. This is going to be a challenge today.
We were supposed to get a blizzard, at least a foot of snow. There was even a travel ban! When I woke up this morning, I expected several texts with notifications of closed campuses. Nope. I looked out the window and saw snow, but not a foot, not even close. Classes were only delayed.
I have no childcare available, though, due to the snow. So, I'm cancelling my classes today. I hate to do it, especially since the semester just started, but I have no choice. I've posted assignments online for my students. I'm sure the commuters will appreciate the cancellation. But I still feel guilty. Every time I have to cancel a class, I wait for a "you're fired!" email.
The boys are still asleep, and I've spent the morning posting assignments, enjoying my coffee, and noting journals I'd like to submit some work to. I've been submitting at least two poems per month, and I'd like to keep that up this year. Even though my schedule is horrific, I'm taking two online workshops right now. I'm also considering starting a writers group. I attended a meeting of a new one last week, but the founder was so...well, not someone I'd like to hang out with. Bossy, narcissistic, and I think we'd clash a bit. I was the only poet at the meeting anyway. So, a friend and I might try to start a group this summer.
Another goal I should put out there, just for accountability, is to look for freelance writing and editing gigs. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to maintain this level of adjunct work. Or, how much longer I'll want to.
Off to make more coffee...
Last Love, let me never roll out of this heavy dream of you, let the day I was born mean my life will end where you end. Let the man behind the church do what he did if it brings me to you. Let the girls in the locker room corner me again if it brings me to you. Let this wild depression throw me beneath its hooves if it brings me to you. Let me pronounce my hoarded joy if it brings me to you. Let my father break me again and again if it brings me to you.

The Rumblrâs in-house astrologer, Madame Clairevoyant, presents her VERY SPECIAL NEW YEARâS dispatch from the stars.
Aries: This might be a year for focusing on the things that you donât understand. It might be a year for focusing on the places where your vision gets blurry, the spaces where your thoughts get bendy and wild, the moments when your words falter. Itâs a year for choosing the world that is unknown to you, a year for choosing the strange over the safe, as much and as often as you can. This is where you can surprise yourself. This is how you can feel your heart beating. This is how your world can grow.
Taurus: If itâs been hard to see where youâve been going, if itâs been hard to see what itâs all for, that might start to change, this year. You might start to see your hard work begin to take shape, and you might start to see what all your sorrows and doubts have been for. If youâre willing to search and willing to dig, this year can bring treasure. If your eyes are open and your heart is true, everything youâve done and everything youâve been through can start to make sense, can start to mend, can start to bloom.
Gemini: This is going to be a year for honesty and a year for truth and a year for looking with clear eyes at the things that hurt you, the things that haunt you, the things that make your world strange. Try not to hide your brightest self. Try to see what is hidden. This is going to be a year for making choices and a year for speaking your own name out loud. This year will make you grow and this year might make you ache and this year will can leave you strong and happy and brave.
Cancer: This is a year for recognizing the truth of who you are, the truth of who you want to be, the truth of what you need to live. Everything you want, everything you love, is already good enough. There is knowledge that already lives in your skin, thereâs knowledge thatâs already buried deep in your guts, and you pay attention, you can feel it vibrating inside of you. Itâs a year for learning new ways to listen and new ways to live in your body. Itâs a year for telling the world who you are.
Leo: This is a year to keep working, a year to keep trying, a year to keep searching. This is a year to remind yourself how much it all matters, even when youâre tired, even when the nights are long. There is strength in your body, and thereâs electricity in your words, and you have all the tools you need, even if they arenât clear to you yet. You can make the world around you so much larger, so much warmer, so much wilder, and try to remember that itâs also enough just to keep moving.
Virgo: This year, your heart can be filled with brightness, and your eyes can be clear and shining, and as you move through this world, youâll be even more powerful than you know, even more powerful than you can see. Try to trust your own body, and you can be so brave. Try to trust everything youâve learned about yourself, and you wonât have to do anything out of fear. You wonât have to make your life smaller. You can make the choices that scare you. You can open yourself up to wild things and strange things and unexpected joy.
Libra: This can be a strange year, a serious year, a big year. Time can stretch out around you this year, and your days can feel long and full and sweet. There will be so much space to grow into. There will be so much space to work. You can relax into your movements; you can take your time. You donât have to rush and you donât have to worry. Youâll have plenty of time to do everything you need to. Youâll have plenty of time as long as you keep moving.
Scorpio: This year can be bright and this year can be loud and this year can shimmer and glow, but when youâre alone, when your days are quiet, practice letting your feelings thaw out a little. Practice letting your world be unclear, letting your dreams get blurry and soft, letting time move slowly. This doesnât mean that youâll be less brave, it doesnât mean that you canât find answers, just that this is a year for wondering, a year for seeing in new ways. Trust what you know and be gentle with the people around you.
Sagittarius: The world might feel so big this year, all bright and strange and golden. The world might start to open up, but you wonât notice unless you look. You can use your own time how you want, you can draw your own maps, you can make the rules of your own life. Itâs a year for remembering all of the muscles in your body. Itâs a year for remembering all the things that your heart can do. Practice asking for more from your life, this year. Practice asking for more from yourself.
Capricorn: The hard times and the strange times and the wild times youâve been through can start to pay off, this year. Everything youâve done and everything youâve felt has been worth something, has added warmth to your heart or color to your dreams or bright power to your body. Something might shift in the earth and something might change in the water and you can find some kind of rare hope, some kind of bright energy, some kind of electric love for yourself and for your world, something that will be enough to help you keep living.
Aquarius: This year is about making decisions and moving forward and moving on, even if you arenât ready, even if youâre afraid. The world is going to ask for bravery from you, and itâs going to ask for you to stretch and expand yourself, and itâs going to ask for you to try very hard. So many new things will enter your life, and all you have to do is keep moving. All you have to do is trust yourself to live your own life, trust your skin to know what you need, trust your feet to carry you forward.
Pisces: This year, the ground underneath you might shift and the sky overhead might brighten. The emotional structures youâve built your whole life on might wobble and shake, just a little, just enough to make you free. This year youâll be able to do things you never thought you would. Youâll be able to live in ways that never wouldâve fit inside the boundaries of your life, before. Youâve always had the capacity for so much more than you knew. This year you can grow so much more fully into yourself.
