Maybe I need to make my husband watch the series again...
Gale Dekarios is such a girl dad. I feel like there's no way he wouldn't have a daughter. And he'd spoil her terribly, while still teaching her manners. He'd also talk to her like she can understand him, so baby's first word is probably something like "magic" or "Weave". "Dada" is her second word.
And then she is, of course, a daddy's girl, because Gale would do cute little illusions for her all the time. Mom, being a wild mage, is less keen on doing magic around the baby. And Gale will do the bedtime stories, starting with An Introduction to the Weave, because obviously. And baby LOVES it.
Gale carries her in a front-facing backpack thingy, so she can see everything, and go with him everywhere. He takes her to lectures when his wife is sick, and baby tries to participate in lectures. Gale treats it like legitimate discussion, especially when the students are just sitting there staring at him. Baby girl loves to babble lectures at the students, and even shakes her finger at them for emphasis.
And I have a whole other thing I'm working on for the companions meeting the baby. I've decided that her name is Eleanor, and Shadowheart is her favorite auntie.
@faereads23 mentioned wanting more Dad Gale, so I guess I'm writing fanfics again. And what better place to start than at the beginning?
For ease of storytelling, Gale is married to my wild magic sorcerer tav, Amira, because that's who I romanced him with, and their banter is adorable.
Gale had been teaching for a full two years at Blackstaff Academy, and had finally gotten a group who wasn't completely terrified of him. His wife Amira, a powerful mage in her own right, was always eager to help him brainstorm ways to get the students more interested in the lessons, and he couldn't wait to get back to the tower to tell her that her that it had finally paid off.
He found her in the library, deep in a heated debate with Tara. He smiled as the ginger woman provoked his old friend. Tara usually started it, but Amira was perhaps the more stubborn of the two. Not the best temperament for someone whose magic was highly unpredictable.
"It's always wonderful to see my favorite ladies getting along," Gale announced with a smile. He knew better than to insist that they be friends. Tara had been very disapproving of their relationship at first, always expecting the humans to part ways once the excitement of saving the world together had worn off. The tressym had been disappointed when it never happened. Fate may have brought Amira to him, but Gale knew that the love he felt for her was stronger than any magic.
"Welcome home!" Amira cried, throwing her arms around the wizard. "Did anyone fall asleep this time?"
"Not a one, my love." He held her close and kissed her cheek. "I even managed to get a few laughs today."
"Ooh, did you tell them Shadowheart's jokes?"
"The girl's jokes are hardly amusing," Tara sniffed, wrapping her tail around herself. "But I suppose Mr. Dekarios' pupils are young enough to be easily amused."
"It was actually the story of how we met," Gale admitted sheepishly.
Amira snickered. "I still can't believe you were so serious about that high five."
"I was trapped between realms!"
"You were quite clumsy in your youth, too," Tara teased.
"It's not clumsiness, it's a willingness to try new things," Gale defended.
"Speaking of trying new things..." Amira grinned up at him, almost like a feline herself. "Do you remember that package we got from Halsin and Shadowheart a while back?"
Gale flushed. He knew exactly which package his wife was referring to. The cleric had been quite insistent that the couple was "too settled", and the archdruid had been more than happy to help her with ideas. The resulting supplies had lost them plenty of sleep over the last few months. "Darling, not in front of Tara..."
Amira giggled. She was so beautiful when she laughed... "No need to fret, my love. It's not about what happened, so much as the result."
"The... result?" Gale was used to his wife's puzzles, but whatever her goal this time, he was at a loss. "Besides needing to nap in the middle of the day like a cat?"
"Oh, do take pity on him," Tara urged, sounding amused. "He'll never guess if you don't offer him more than that."
"But he's so adorable when he's solving a puzzle!"
Gale looked from his wife to his cat. "Are you two... getting along? I really am missing something, aren't I?"
"She's just come to terms with the fact that you're both stuck with me." Amira took Gale's hands. "You may have noticed a few little changes recently. Involving me and food."
"I don't see how your recent illness has anything to do with the, er..." Gale hesitated for moment. "The previous topic. I thought we had determined that it was simply dinner disagreeing with you."
Amira leaned in close, and he could smell citrus and sage. "How do you feel about children, Gale?"
The wizard frowned. "Children? My love, you've covered three topics now, without explaining-" And then realization washed over him like a thunderwave. He stared at his wife's beaming face. "Are you... Are you pregnant?" Amira giggled and nodded. Gale put a hand on her cheek. "How long have you known?"
"I just learned of it today. I went to see the physician while you were out. Though Tara has suspected for a few weeks, now."
"You're really having a child..." Gale looked down at his wife's still-flat belly. "Mother of Magic... You're going to be a mother!"
"And you're going to be a father." Amira kissed his cheek.
"A father... But what if I'm not-?" The panic was short-lived.
"Gale Dekarios," Amira said playfully flicking his forehead, "You are going to be a *wonderful* father."
Gale grinned at his wife. She never doubted him, even when he knew there was reason to. But if she was so confident about his abilities, he would hate to disappoint her. He hugged her around the waist, picking her up off her feet as he spun her around. "We're going to be parents!" He cheered. Amira laughed and threw her arms around his neck.
Tara rolled her eyes. "I suppose I should begin making preparations. Are you going to tell your mother, or shall I?"
