everyone i've talked to about this has been completely unaware so: if you didn't know already, there's going to be a solar eclipse, with totality or coverage of 90% or more in some places, over a lot of europe, on august 12th 2026. in the uk it will start just after 6pm, and the maximum will be at 7:13pm.

here is a map of the path of the eclipse (from timeanddate)

get eclipse glasses if you want to look at it. it is not safe to look at through sunglasses. ok informative post over o7

La Grace is a traditional tall ship and replica of an 18th-century brig inspired by Augustin Heřman, regarded as the first Czech seafarer. Built in Egypt between 2008 and 2010 by Czech and Slovak volunteers, she now sails as a training ship, keeping the traditions of historic seamanship alive.

Sorry I've been offline for a few days! Last week was the Ann Arbor Art Fair, and I was out on the street drawing alongside the most imaginative sidewalk chalk artists of southeast Michigan!

I'm hoping to have a similar turnout at the Berkley Street Fest this Saturday, July 25 in Berkley, Michigan! I'll be doing a demo 1:00-2:30 pm and selling/signing my books, prints, postcards, totes, and my brand new 2027 Street Art Calendar all day! Come say hi and maybe help make the world more colorful!

Bone shipmodel of (USS) Chesapeake , made by Prisoners of War c. 1814 or 1815, 1,44 m long © the middle one was made by me, the rest was made by the International Maritime Museum Hamburg

It is always assumed that this model is USS Cheasapeak which was captured by HMS Shannon. The legend says that the imprisoned crew made this model for the widow of Captain Lawrence.

It is not quite clear where this model was made. Meanwhile there is the assumption that this is HMS Cheasapeake, the repaired and in British service placed USS Cheasapeake. And that the model was built by order, by French Prisoners of War as a reminder of these important battle. Well, finally, it’s the Cheasapeake. The material is whale bone and the whole model measures 1,44m.

ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY July 14, 2026 at 05:00PM Is there an angry Sith using force lightning in the Tatacoa Desert? This is not science fiction, but a red sprite with multiple streamers! Ordinary lightning occurs when thundercloud particles collide, lose their electrons, and build up negative charge at the cloud bottom. The cloud’s negative charge repels negative charge deeper into the Earth, leaving Earth’s surface positively charged. The opposite charges attract, reaching towards each other and superheating the air into a white strike of plasma. Red sprites are millisecond events triggered by positive cloud-to-ground lightning. They extend up into the mesosphere where the air is too thin for thunder. Their red glow comes from heated molecular nitrogen. There are several potential causes for red sprites, including that the preceding positive lightning exposes the negatively charged cloud core to the positively charged upper atmosphere, allowing those charges to connect.
