These are selections of wonderful and very intact photographs taken during the Victorian Era, mainly from the years 1860 to 1901. Photos of Women of Color from this era are hard to come by, especially “family” photographs. Sadly these beautiful and touching images go unnamed.

SO this is one of my best friends who was pulled out of ALL of her afternoon classes and sent to In-School Suspension today because she was wearing this exact outfit. Ridiculous? Read on.

Every year, there is a dress code seminar at the beginning of the year reminding all of the students what is expected of them to wear or not wear. This year, the topic of leggings came up.

We’d been told not to wear leggings before, but the reasoning was a little different this year. We were told, and I quote, that it “makes the male administration uncomfortable” when we “dress in clothes so revealing.” Well, okay.

I’ll definitely have you know that this dress code is highly unevenly enforced. This is partly due to the fact that many girls ignore the sexist rule and avoid the admin that they know will make them change the best they can. Other times the “dress code infractions” are simply ignored by some admin. You may as well walk down a hallway and witness quite a few girls wearing leggings. Nobody else seems to be made uncomfortable by them other than the ones enforcing it. Hmmmm, interesting.

She and I were calmly chatting on our way to our fifth period classes when she got stopped by an administrator in regards to her outfit (which, might I say, was cute as hell). In a few minutes, she was promptly escorted to have a chat with said adminstrator in order for her to change. She refused and stated her reasons why: that it was sexist and unfair. Her punishment? In-school Suspension.

The main thing that I have a problem with is that you are making the education system all about yourself and not a child’s education by asserting that some ways that teenage girls dress makes you uncomfortable. Who are you to be sexualizing 16 year-old girls anyway?

Even if this statement was logical, there is nothing revealing at all about her attire. Everything is covered by the rest of her clothes except for her thighs. If she had been wearing black skinny jeans, nothing would have happened. It’s literally all about her leggings. It’s a way to control us.

Secondly, what is the school district’s main goal? To educate the youth, not indocrinate them. It is to inform us, not suppress us and make us conform to your twisted and outdated standards of “appropriate attire.” By sending a teenage girl to detention for half a day because she was wearing leggings, you are not only implying that she is not worthy of receiving an education if she is not dressed to your liking, you are also telling her that the males who are supposedly “distracted” by this are completely permitted to act like savages without any control. The only catch is that they are still more worthy of an education.
