You will never know what’s under my skin

I stay up late at night and listen to him breathe. I turn the light on to see his sweet face and he gets upset with me for he is trying to sleep. I feel his soft warm skin against mine. His fingers twitch in his sleep as he holds me and it sends lighting throughout my body. He breathes softly as his body raises and falls with each breath like the ocean coming and going in such gentle rhythm. A violent snore interrupts the peacefulness and makes me giggle. I talk to him in his sleep and tell him that I love him more than anything and that I'm sorry I keep him up so late. My eyes well up with tears and I squeeze him closer and feel his heart so gentle and loving. But I know, soon he will be a memory and I don't know how to possibly absorb enough of these moments to not miss him. I don't know how to feel him any deeper or to memorize his touch enough for it to be okay. Imagination isn't enough to feel his skin, and listen to his soft whispers of sleep. I'm sorry I can't sleep because I honestly can't let myself miss a single second with him. The soldiers volunteer, but I was drafted. 12:29am JG
