#Week 15: Ethos, Pathos, Logos FTW!

Almost done with this semester and this picture describes exactly how the end of the semester has me! The feels are real!

Section A: As a Writer…

The way I will achieve using rhetorical appeal throughout my website is to make sure that each piece of writing that goes one each page is liable and has enough detail backed up with supported evidence (if needed). For instance with the “About Me” page, I can have the use of pathos involved since I’m talking about my future and what I plan on achieving. Ethos and Logos can be implemented within the assignment and course reading reflections since my writing will be credible (it goes through ethos) and I’ll be implementing logical information–facts, statistics, and photos that are valid (ties to logos). The viewer will be able to see little clips of each rhetorical appeal and have an idea of the concepts that I am using. 

Section B: As a Designer…

The way that I will achieve ethos, pathos and logos is by using the 5 special elements that make a website, the perfect website. Having an even portion of text and photos will go very nicely in a website, just so the reader doesn’t feel overwhelmed with a huge amount of photos or text. I will make sure to keep my website consistent within every section and make sure that it has a special flow to it in order to keep the viewer/audience engaged. As far as color details go, I won’t be implementing flashy colors–instead I’ll use more soft and professional kind of colors. I want the audience to feel informed and stay engaged as much as possible. I will make sure to follow each of the guidelines required for my website and will take some thought into expanding my vision more–without making it to flashy, but have it more eye-catching to the viewer.

Great job on your post! I like the gifs you included. I like how you are going to employ pathos on your “About me” page by including details about yourself and your future. I definitely believe this is a great way to get your audience to feel some sort of emotions while reading the text of your website. My design section of my Tumblr post was very similar to yours, except I did not include the part about the color! I don’t know if you knew this, but certain websites use the color blue to display a professional, calming design of their website. Examples of this are on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook! I really believe for my website I will make the background blue in order to give the audience some sort of pathos (calming). Great job on your post, and good luck during finals week!

Thinking about my website

I will be using five principles of design such as contrast, consistency, balance, grouping and alignment to make sure my website gets a good grade.

Section A:

I will be analyzing this website  http://trendlines.ca/ .

Questions for analysis:

1. Identify and describe the balance of the site. 

The website is somewhat balanced because the text is very clear to read yet they used different colors in the text and everything is easily accessible.  The colors used in this website are fairly well because they are not gloomy or flashy and certainly grab my attention.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

The contrast on the site is okay but not the best due to the fact they used a light purple background for information given such as price components. The designer of this website could have done better by using other colors.The font size is small and readable. 

3. Evaluate the site’s use of consistency.

The use of consistency is not consistent because they use various colors on the website making it hard for the audience to focus on just one thing.

4. Describe the site’s utilization of alignment and grouping.

Alignment of this site is not good because most of the text is spread out with different templates and the grouping of images and numbers in the graph are not at all consistent and are very confusing.

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site. 

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of the site is very weak and gives me an idea of what not to do in my site such as using different colored text and have the information scattered everywhere.

The contrast of this website is clean and very organized. The format used for this website is appropriate and the designer used a great color of background because everything is easy to read and access.

The consistency of this site is great because the text used in this site was not too small and I was able to read everything not to mention the nice colors he used in this website.

The alignment and grouping of this website was very good because everything was accessible and easy to follow through.

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site.

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of this site is very good. It showed me how clean and simple my website should be. This gives me an idea of what my website should look like.

Section B: Implications for my own design

1. What will you have to do to ensure that your website is balanced?

I will have to use the same size of images I will be displaying on my website as well as using same format of text. Also I will make sure there is not too much on the site because that will throw off the balance.

2. How will you use contrast on your website?

I will use the contrast on my website such as maintaining the same theme and using same colored text and format so that it looks organized.

3. Where will you employ consistency on your website?

I will employ consistency on my website by maintaining the same layout on every page

4. How can you use alignment and grouping to make your website more effective?

I can use alignment and grouping to make my website more effective because it will make it look very organized and to the point. Readers will have easy access to pages.

5. What colors will you use for your website? Why?

Colors I will use for my website are still undecided but I will make sure not to use the blinding yellow with pink text. I will use colors such as grey or beige or something along those lines to keep it simple.

6. How else can you ensure that your website is well-designed?

I will ensure my website is well-designed by following the website supplemental guidelines and asking the professor any questions regarding the website.

I agree with your answers for the first website; I thought it could be better organized. For the second website, I thought it was much better than the second in terms of nearly everything. Wrapping up the film: Creating a plan of action

A. What days and times will you commit to the project?

The days and times vary depending on the days I go to school. I usually work on the project in between classes and after school during the week.

B. What days/times are you working as a group and when will you work alone?

The days and times that we are working as a group are usually Sunday’s at noon. And we will also be meeting on Saturdays in the morning at UTEP. I work alone throughout the week after school and sometimes in the weekend in the evening.

C. Specifically, what aspect the project will you address on each of those days?

On the days my partner and I get together, we will work on the advocacy section, breaking down each point and going more in depth on the issue regarding ethnic and gender diversity in the medical field. We will also look for the type of music and images that will go with our video. The aspect I will address in those days of the project include editing the video on iMovie and adding more details towards the gender diversity topic.

D. Specifically, what will you do to complete those aspects of the project?

I will complete the aspects of the project by meeting with my partner and edit the video. I will also be organizing the claim on why gender diversity is important in the medical field as well as advocating the audience on what they can do to increase gender diversity in the medical field. My partner will work on the claim on why increasing ethnic diversity is important in the medical field.

E. What specific aspects of the assignment are you most concerned about? What can you do to address those concerns?

The specific aspect of the assignment I am most concerned about is the audience. It will be a challenge to appeal to our audience which includes students in the grades K-12, parents of the students, financial aid committee, and the medical school admissions committee because we must relate all of the audience together. To address these concerns, we will create appeals to each community regarding why it is important to increase ethnic and gender diversity in the medical field.

F. What specific aspects of the assignment are you most comfortable with? Why?

The specific aspects of the project I am most comfortable with are the support because our partner and I have scholarly articles and graphs that will strongly support our claims regarding our topic on the assignment.

Hey Victoria, 

Great job on your post! I can’t believe most of our answers are basically pretty much the same! Knowing that you are concerned for the audience as well, I think it is very important that we put our heads together in order to come up with a great solution that will help us to appeal to all of our different audience communities. Our articles and statistics should help us a lot, I am glad you felt the same way about the support section! We definitely have that section down. On Saturday we will get most of the filming done, and if need be we can also meet next week. I am confident our documentary will get done on time and that we will be able to appeal to all of our audience. I will see you Thursday, and on Saturday I will be ready to film the documentary! One of these days we definitely have to read each others literature reviews, I feel they are going to be a huge help in our support section. Well I’ll see you in class on Thursday!

CREATING A PLAN OF ACTION

a.     My partner and I will meet on Saturday, the 19th, and get most of the filming done on that day. If need be, we will meet the week of the 21st to 25th as well.

b.     Saturday we will be working as a group to get some filming done for the documentary, while the week of the 21st-25th we plan on editing the documentary by ourselves.

c.     On Saturday, we are going to be addressing mostly the Claim and Advocate section of the documentary. The week of the 21st through the 25th, we plan on adding different video clips, voiceovers, and pictures to the documentary we will be editing through iMovie.

d.     On Saturday, Victoria and I will take videos of us each explaining our “claims” on the subject. Specifically, Victoria will make her claim about why it is important to have increased gender diversity in medicine, while I will explain why it is important to have ethnic diversity in the medical field. We will also specifically film each other “advocating” to our intended audience; which are parents, teachers of K-12 schools, financial aid committees, and finally medical school admission committees. We will both be ready to discuss initiatives/solutions on the issue, pertaining to the specific audience. Next week, we will specifically be working on the introduction, support, and conclusion section of the documentary. We plan on doing this by collecting short video clips, pictures, and using voiceovers to help state our specific claims on the topic of diversity in the medical field. A great example of how I want to include our claims is in the picture below. It will be like an interview, with “UTEP student researcher” next to us!

 e.     In my opinion, I am mostly concerned about our target audience. Since we want to appeal to parents of students in K-12 grades, teachers of those students, financial aid committees, and finally medical school admissions committees, I believe it might be a struggle to relate to all four of the different communities. I believe the only way to address this concern is to create different appeals for each different community, and concisely give them a reason to understand why it is important that they contribute to our society by helping the future of medicine be more gender and ethnically diverse. We will have to be quick with each appeal, as to not take up too much time on this section.

 f.      I am most comfortable with our statistics, and our claims. From reading many articles about the subject (thanks to the literature review), I feel that there are tons of evidence that will help our claim on the topic that the U.S. needs a more diverse gender and ethnic workforce. Using these statistics and journals to our advantage, I believe our introduction, claim, and support sections of our documentary will be the strongest, and the sections I feel the most comfortable with!

Week 12: Building a Production Team!!

Topic: Racial Diversity in Higher Education

Purpose: Racial Minorities must start getting hired for THE position desired. Minorities such as African Americans, Asian, Pacific islander and the biggest ethnic minority known as Latinos here in El Paso, Texas. Graphic Design, Anthropology, Social work and education are in need of a more diverse staff in order o succeed economically and socially.

Audience: We are trying to persuade college students, specifically minorities that attend collage, because we are the future and possible change that many industries need to thrive.  

Solution:Our audience must begin “checking the box” in any application. Not because they meet a quota, but because empowering a cultural background is super powerful. Embracing that you are a minority, you must be aware that you are bringing skills to the table that are needed and requested by our society, especially if you are planning to grow professionally near borders that unite bilingual, multicultural growing citizens. Scholarships are also available for minorities.

***My group is covering the following four majors in our documentary: Graphic design, education, anthropology, and social work. I will be going into depth for my own major which is social work.***

According to a few authors is the article Social Work Practice with Latinos: Key Issues For Social Workers (Furman et al.,2009) “Recommendations on how agencies and universities can recruit and promote bilingual practitioners are introduced” This means a more diverse staff is needed to cover the needs of the culturally diverse patients in a more effective manner and these authors begin introducing methods in 2009.

Great job on your post! The quotes you have included are going to help a lot with the logos of your documentary. I am going to make sure to include as much logos in my documentary as possible. I think pathos would help your documentary a lot, especially in a city like El Paso where there are people who have language barriers, causing them to not be able to obtain a higher education. Research Skills Reflection

#Week11

WHAT

What I have learnt throughout the semester and all the project that we have done is that at first I really did not know how hard minorities have it when it comes to fight for what they deserve. Like for example women in engineering are still fighting against the perception people has of the field itself. However, there are some good things as well, for example the number of women in engineering is increasing with each passing day. Developing this Literature Review was a challenge, but at the same time it was interesting and fun. I learnt to analyze different points of views and transform them to one of my own, to be able to correctly research but not research just anything I was doing actually something that will be with me the rest of my career…

SO WHAT

What I learnt from this course is important because this is something that all the people should know, how to create a Lit Review, Genre Analysis etc. This is important not only because it will help me throughout my life but also because it will help other students later on. You are able to work with different types of sources, take what you learn from the research and apply it to your life. As a future graduate, a lot more paper will be required and every time they will be harder and harder so this is a great place to start when it comes to learn how to research properly and to write Lit Reviews. Also the interview that I did with Dr. Villanueva was very helpful and influence my career, since she is already went through what I will be going through when I graduate, her experience and knowledge in the field really is important.

NOW WHAT

Now that I know more about my field of research, I now that I can surely making and impact in the engineering field just by deciding to follow this path. I know there are still problems regarding this community but eventually they will disappear and I wish to be part of that solution in the future. I know, however that for now the only way to help is to keep fighting and studying in order to get my degree and finally do the difference in a world full of conflicts and disagreements.

Great job on your post! I enjoyed reading it very much. I am glad that engineering field for women is increasing in diversity every day. The field I was researching in is not growing as fast as it should be, and its great knowing there is at least one field in STEM that is still growing fast. I hope you are able to get your engineering degree efficiently and without problems. The things we have learned in this class should help you a lot, and researching shouldn't be a problem anymore! Week 11

WHAT: 

I have learned a ton I didn’t know about my topic this semester. I have learned that my field is not as diverse as I originally thought.  I had no idea that the Hispanic population was the smallest represented minority group in the medical profession. Barriers are usually created when a physician can’t speak the same language as their patient, or don’t understand the culture the patients follow. This is why it is important to have a diverse physician workforce, because we need our physicians to be able to understand different cultures. I thought there would not be that much data on my semester topic, Diversity of Hispanics in Medicine, but researching I was able to find a lot of scholarly and open references, and it was very easy to make a literature review based off those references. Obtaining primary research through interview was a great experience. The scholars here at the University of Texas at El Paso are very nice, and are open to student’s interviewing them about their respective fields. My scholar, Ms. Mary Wells, scheduled my interview as quickly as she could and answered all my questions effectively and with passion. She really wanted to discuss the topic of diversity in the medical field. Researching with Academic Source Complete has been a big help toward my research, since the program filters out most of the crappy papers out there and leaves you with the good ones. Other than that, finding good scholarly and open sources through the internet has been really easy, and I have enjoyed researching and learning about my topic. 

SO WHAT:

What I have learned is important for the course because I can apply the research skills I have learned in graduate/medical school. I feel like the resources I have come to identify with will help me very much in the future. Other than that, I feel like knowing about the workforce I will be joining is going to be a major help. I researched a lot about medical school admissions processes, and now I know what medical schools are looking for in a minority applicant. I know what it’s going to take to become a doctor within the Hispanic population. I am going to have to be fluent with Spanish if I want to help my city, and I must identify with the culture around my city in order to be a good physician to my patients in the area. Without this trust formed between the physician and patient, the patient will not feel welcome, and will be unlikely to follow treatment plans. I have learned what it will take to become a great, Hispanic-culture physician.

NOW WHAT:

I can put the knowledge I have learned from this course in mainly three ways: Now that I know how easy it is to get in contact with a scholar in the field, I feel that many physicians in the region will be open to me shadowing them while they practice. I feel like the RWS class has given me the skills to be able to email and ask physicians, respectfully, if I could follow them in the field. Second, I feel like learning about how to research in the course is going to help me with the actual research I do in the biosciences building at UTEP. I will now be able to research papers on biology more efficiently, without ever having to look at crappy papers. Finally, I am going to take advantage of the many resources out there, such as the library and its many resources that help students, like the writing center. The library has tons of data, and it will help with my education and future.

Introduction and In-Text Citation

I will begin with the introduction, An introduction goes after the abstract page. To have a good introduction you must make sure it introduces your topic and ends in a thesis statement. An introduction is usually more than half a page but less than a whole page. I found this valuable introduction in our RWS Ebook in page: 226

The thesis statement basically tells the reader what it is that the paper will focus on in one or two sentences. This information was also found in page 226 in the RWS eBook.

For the literature Review you body text must be in APA Format, you can get guidance in the UWC by clicking under Useful Web links in our class shell and clicking the writing center.

You can submit your work via email or go straight to the writing center. As you can see they can definitely help!

You can also find instructions and help in Perdueowl.com also found in Useful Web links.

Now I will explain how to successfully add In-Text Citations. Make sure the quotes you choose do not exceed three lines. This is very important because once there is more quote lines than your own words it is no longer your work but the sources author and that’s not the point right? Ok so now that you’ve made sure you got good quotes! You Introduce your quote to your audience because your audience does not know what the article was about, then you insert your quote and you finish by explaining it very well. Make sure it all makes sense to keep your writing very flooooowyy ! You must add the author and year the work was published for t to be APA style. The pictures below explain exactly how to do it and easy for you it is already explained in APA style! I hope his helped.

Hello, 

Great job on your post! It definitely had a ton of information to look over. I definitely like how you included the information needed to write a good thesis statement. I was just summarizing my whole paper in my thesis statement, but now I know it is basically the most important part of your introduction, and how to make a phenomenal thesis statement! Also the APA format guidelines will be very helpful, I honestly didn’t know we had that information given to us! Our instructor is very helpful. I’ve used the Purdue Owl before, and I can agree with you, it is very helpful when writing a paper! Finally, I thought the in-text citations I had for my Genre Analysis were pretty weak, and now with your Tumblr Post I will be able to master the art of making great in-text citations. Graphic Image & Conclusions

For this weeks Tumblr Tuesday, I started looking for graphic image and conclusion requirements from the material we all have in our possession.

I will start with the Graphic. The screenshot below was found in the RWS handbook that we all have, and it described the requirements for the Graphic. 

How will you achieve a great Graphic you ask? Just make sure to include everything listed on the list, on the most very column to the left! This will get you an A on the Graphic portion of your Literature Review! This is from the Rubric in our RWS handbook for the literature review. 

Finally, I included some examples of great Graphics by looking at the examples of Literature Reviews in the RWS handbook.

Lets move on to the Conclusion portion of the assignment. Here are some requirements for the conclusion, taken from the RWS handbook and The Literature Review Guidelines from the folder titled Week 10, provided to us from our instructor!

 To get a great score and achieve an “A” on your conclusion, just follow the criteria above! Finally, I list two examples below of great conclusions. These are from the examples in our RWS handbook for the Literature Review!

Just make sure to write your conclusion to the caliber of the conclusions stated above, and you should be good! Reiterate your thesis and more, and wrap up your literature review! Good luck everyone!

Week 9: Preparation for my interview

To start off my interview preparation I emailed my interview request to Dr. Villanueva who is my first choice scholar.

After that I downloaded the Release Form and the Interview Confirmation in my Dropbox folder. So I can access them whenever and wherever I go!

Next I went ahead and look for my questions and rewrite them, so they will be easy to understand and to follow along.

YESS finally!! After all this preparation I just need one more thing… The materials I will be using!

Great job on your post! I enjoyed reading your process. I especially like how you went ahead and took the time to put your interview questions together! All I did was screenshot the interview questions from the Matrix I made. After seeing your post, I am going to go back and put all my questions on one piece of paper, so they could all be in one place. Interview Prep!

I started off by emailing my #1 scholar. 

I continued by saving the Interview Release Form to my Dropbox. 

Then I collected my drafted Interview Questions. 

Then I saved the Interview Confirmation document to my Dropbox. 

Here is a picture of the materials I will use to record the interview. I am also considering renting a camcorder from the library to film the interview as well!

You did a great job on your post! I looked over your questions, and I believe most of them will lead to open-ended answers by the scholar you will be interviewing, compared to just yes/ no answers by them. For the ones where you ask if they agree, maybe you can find a way to elaborate more when they answer the question, so that you can possibly get some more discussion about it. I’m sorry that you had to change some of your articles; but at least now you are on the right track and ready for the literature review!     The reason I chose Professor Ward is because I’ve overheard his lectures before. He’s not only a very intelligent man but also the way he teaches is very uplifting and motivating! He walked in one of my classes one time and started advising us and telling us what classes he recommends us to take and which path to take in our journey of majoring Computer Science. He searches human- computer interaction, along with other areas, it’s a very interesting topic and would like to know more about his work.

Natalia Villanueva, of course I would like ti learn more about her and not to mention, she is a very inspiring person( She is my CS professor). Her distinctive areas of research are data-and-ontology based knowledge negotiation. I’ve never heard of such, since I am open to learn new things I would like to learn about her topic and see what options are in CS based on her knowledge and experience. 

Martine Ceberio, she has done applications in software which I’m highly interested in. Also part of the many inspirational women who encourage other women to join Computer Science which is something very important to me!
