Ethos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section, I will be sure to employ the use of ethos by keeping it true to myself and who I am as a person. I will make sure everything is neat, correct, in terms of grammar and things of that nature, as well as keeping it light hearted but professional at the same time.

Assignment Reflections: When doing the assignment reflections, I plan to maintain ethos throughout it by reviewing the assignments that I have completed and basing my reflections solely off of the new and fresh ideas of the assignments in my head so that no information is missing.

Reading Reflections: When completing the reflections on my readings, I plan to use ethos by re-referencing the ebook as well as the WIT book in order to properly reflect and remember the readings that have been assigned throughout the semester.

Pathos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section, I plan on employing the use of pathos through how I set my website up in terms of fonts, colors, sections, and images. I will make everything clear and concise while keeping it lighthearted in nature.

Assignment Reflections: With this section, I will reflect on everything that I have done that has brought me to where I am in the semester and also as to how much hard work and time each of the assignments really took.

Reading Reflections: For this section, I will employ the use of pathos through discussing some of the readings and as to how they assisted in my completement of the assignments as well as how they helped me throughout the class in general.

Logos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section I will utilize logos by maintaining a specific layout throughout my whole website as well as making sure that all of the information on it is up to date and accurate for the reader to soak in. I will also compare the websites that have been provided for us in order to make sure that I am on the right track to creating a great website.

Assignment Reflections: In this section, logos can be applied through using examples. The examples or evidence can come from the tumblr pdf files as well as other assignment files that had been posted in order to ensure that everything is correct.

Reading Reflections: Similarly to assignment reflections, I will be referencing the ebook as well as the hard copy book in order to ensure that all of the information and examples I have for the readings are accurate and helpful.

Section B: 

Ethos: As a designer, I will employ ethos through the use of correct information and trustworthy sources. Also, as always, correct grammar and punctuation are a must so those will be employed as well to ensure that my website design will follow the rules of ethos.

Pathos: As a designer, pathos will come in handy because I can showcase it through the layout of my website, the colors of the website, and the total content of the website. I plan on keeping the design of my website mostly monochromatic and simple so I think that in the context of pathos, my website will be successful.

Logos: As a designer, I will employ the use of logos by maintaining a neat and simple layout that is easy to navigate. I will only be using things that are correct and helpful and I will also make sure to give credit to my sources.

Week 14: The Road to my Website

Since creating this website is the last assignment of the semester, I am so happy to finish!

In the process of creating my website, I must remember to use the five principles of design which are 

1) CONTRAST-  Design such as font style and size are different from one another.

2) CONSISTENCY-  Making sure design is consistent and similar.

3) BALANCE-  When images and text have equal weight, such as spreading out the content.

4) GROUPING-  Keeping sets of like items on the same page and not scattered.

5) ALIGNMENT-  Lining up elements on the page either vertically of horizontally.

Hey Chris! I definitely agree that the first website was not at all laid out well and has many colors going on that takes away from the message of the website. Thinking about my website

I will be using five principles of design such as contrast, consistency, balance, grouping and alignment to make sure my website gets a good grade.

Section A:

I will be analyzing this website  http://trendlines.ca/ .

Questions for analysis:

1. Identify and describe the balance of the site. 

The website is somewhat balanced because the text is very clear to read yet they used different colors in the text and everything is easily accessible.  The colors used in this website are fairly well because they are not gloomy or flashy and certainly grab my attention.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

The contrast on the site is okay but not the best due to the fact they used a light purple background for information given such as price components. The designer of this website could have done better by using other colors.The font size is small and readable. 

3. Evaluate the site’s use of consistency.

The use of consistency is not consistent because they use various colors on the website making it hard for the audience to focus on just one thing.

4. Describe the site’s utilization of alignment and grouping.

Alignment of this site is not good because most of the text is spread out with different templates and the grouping of images and numbers in the graph are not at all consistent and are very confusing.

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site. 

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of the site is very weak and gives me an idea of what not to do in my site such as using different colored text and have the information scattered everywhere.

The contrast of this website is clean and very organized. The format used for this website is appropriate and the designer used a great color of background because everything is easy to read and access.

The consistency of this site is great because the text used in this site was not too small and I was able to read everything not to mention the nice colors he used in this website.

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of this site is very good. It showed me how clean and simple my website should be. This gives me an idea of what my website should look like.

Section B: Implications for my own design

1. What will you have to do to ensure that your website is balanced?

I will have to use the same size of images I will be displaying on my website as well as using same format of text. Also I will make sure there is not too much on the site because that will throw off the balance.

2. How will you use contrast on your website?

I will use the contrast on my website such as maintaining the same theme and using same colored text and format so that it looks organized.

3. Where will you employ consistency on your website?

I will employ consistency on my website by maintaining the same layout on every page

4. How can you use alignment and grouping to make your website more effective?

I can use alignment and grouping to make my website more effective because it will make it look very organized and to the point. Readers will have easy access to pages.

5. What colors will you use for your website? Why?

Colors I will use for my website are still undecided but I will make sure not to use the blinding yellow with pink text. I will use colors such as grey or beige or something along those lines to keep it simple.

6. How else can you ensure that your website is well-designed?

I will ensure my website is well-designed by following the website supplemental guidelines and asking the professor any questions regarding the website.

CREATING A PLAN OF ACTION

a.     My partner and I will meet on Saturday, the 19th, and get most of the filming done on that day. If need be, we will meet the week of the 21st to 25th as well.

b.     Saturday we will be working as a group to get some filming done for the documentary, while the week of the 21st-25th we plan on editing the documentary by ourselves.

c.     On Saturday, we are going to be addressing mostly the Claim and Advocate section of the documentary. The week of the 21st through the 25th, we plan on adding different video clips, voiceovers, and pictures to the documentary we will be editing through iMovie.

d.     On Saturday, Victoria and I will take videos of us each explaining our “claims” on the subject. Specifically, Victoria will make her claim about why it is important to have increased gender diversity in medicine, while I will explain why it is important to have ethnic diversity in the medical field. We will also specifically film each other “advocating” to our intended audience; which are parents, teachers of K-12 schools, financial aid committees, and finally medical school admission committees. We will both be ready to discuss initiatives/solutions on the issue, pertaining to the specific audience. Next week, we will specifically be working on the introduction, support, and conclusion section of the documentary. We plan on doing this by collecting short video clips, pictures, and using voiceovers to help state our specific claims on the topic of diversity in the medical field. A great example of how I want to include our claims is in the picture below. It will be like an interview, with “UTEP student researcher” next to us!

e.     In my opinion, I am mostly concerned about our target audience. Since we want to appeal to parents of students in K-12 grades, teachers of those students, financial aid committees, and finally medical school admissions committees, I believe it might be a struggle to relate to all four of the different communities. I believe the only way to address this concern is to create different appeals for each different community, and concisely give them a reason to understand why it is important that they contribute to our society by helping the future of medicine be more gender and ethnically diverse. We will have to be quick with each appeal, as to not take up too much time on this section.

f.      I am most comfortable with our statistics, and our claims. From reading many articles about the subject (thanks to the literature review), I feel that there are tons of evidence that will help our claim on the topic that the U.S. needs a more diverse gender and ethnic workforce. Using these statistics and journals to our advantage, I believe our introduction, claim, and support sections of our documentary will be the strongest, and the sections I feel the most comfortable with!

Wrapping up the film: Creating a plan of action

A. What days and times will you commit to the project?

The days and times vary depending on the days I go to school. I usually work on the project in between classes and after school during the week.

B. What days/times are you working as a group and when will you work alone?

The days and times that we are working as a group are usually Sunday’s at noon. And we will also be meeting on Saturdays in the morning at UTEP. I work alone throughout the week after school and sometimes in the weekend in the evening.

C. Specifically, what aspect the project will you address on each of those days?

On the days my partner and I get together, we will work on the advocacy section, breaking down each point and going more in depth on the issue regarding ethnic and gender diversity in the medical field. We will also look for the type of music and images that will go with our video. The aspect I will address in those days of the project include editing the video on iMovie and adding more details towards the gender diversity topic.

D. Specifically, what will you do to complete those aspects of the project?

I will complete the aspects of the project by meeting with my partner and edit the video. I will also be organizing the claim on why gender diversity is important in the medical field as well as advocating the audience on what they can do to increase gender diversity in the medical field. My partner will work on the claim on why increasing ethnic diversity is important in the medical field.

E. What specific aspects of the assignment are you most concerned about? What can you do to address those concerns?

The specific aspect of the assignment I am most concerned about is the audience. It will be a challenge to appeal to our audience which includes students in the grades K-12, parents of the students, financial aid committee, and the medical school admissions committee because we must relate all of the audience together. To address these concerns, we will create appeals to each community regarding why it is important to increase ethnic and gender diversity in the medical field.

F. What specific aspects of the assignment are you most comfortable with? Why?

The specific aspects of the project I am most comfortable with are the support because our partner and I have scholarly articles and graphs that will strongly support our claims regarding our topic on the assignment.

According to Dr. Dana D Brooks, “Today, America is witnessing a historical and dramatic shift in the ethnic minority population, particularly Hispanics and Asian Americans, and with it comes a comingling of social identities and citizenship.”

With the lack of gender diversity in the health care field, gender disparities are more likely to occur. This means that the patients will have their own personal preferences. 

Due to these gender disparities, it could create intimidation of the opposing gender to pursue a career in the healthcare field.

 A. Topic: Increasing Ethnic and Gender Diversity in the Medical Field

B. Purpose: To increase ethnic and gender diversity in the medical field

C. Audience: Different ethnicity nurse practitioners, students, parents of students and female and male nurses that want to pursue a career in the medical field. This is our targeted audience because they can make a change that can impact society in many ways.

D. Solution: Our audience should host meetings to motivate the community and discuss issues with city representatives to help pass laws allowing disadvantaged schools to have more access to monetary resources for educational purposes.

Research Skills Reflection

WHAT

What I have learnt throughout the semester and all the project that we have done is that at first I really did not know how hard minorities have it when it comes to fight for what they deserve. Like for example women in engineering are still fighting against the perception people has of the field itself. However, there are some good things as well, for example the number of women in engineering is increasing with each passing day. Developing this Literature Review was a challenge, but at the same time it was interesting and fun. I learnt to analyze different points of views and transform them to one of my own, to be able to correctly research but not research just anything I was doing actually something that will be with me the rest of my career…

SO WHAT

What I learnt from this course is important because this is something that all the people should know, how to create a Lit Review, Genre Analysis etc. This is important not only because it will help me throughout my life but also because it will help other students later on. You are able to work with different types of sources, take what you learn from the research and apply it to your life. As a future graduate, a lot more paper will be required and every time they will be harder and harder so this is a great place to start when it comes to learn how to research properly and to write Lit Reviews. Also the interview that I did with Dr. Villanueva was very helpful and influence my career, since she is already went through what I will be going through when I graduate, her experience and knowledge in the field really is important.

NOW WHAT

Now that I know more about my field of research, I now that I can surely making and impact in the engineering field just by deciding to follow this path. I know there are still problems regarding this community but eventually they will disappear and I wish to be part of that solution in the future. I know, however that for now the only way to help is to keep fighting and studying in order to get my degree and finally do the difference in a world full of conflicts and disagreements.

Reflecting on our research skills

1. WHAT: I have learned so much throughout the course of researching on my semester topic, Gender Diversity in the medical field. I have learned that many workplaces such as health care settings have gender bias and not everyone receives equal opportunities. Creating the literature review was stressful but in the end, it came out well. Thanks to Dr. Diaz Martinez for allowing me to interview her and use her information in my review.

SO WHAT: What I have learned so far is important for this course because it gives me many different perspectives about what can be expected from the medical field and other workplaces. It is also important because it helps me, as a future grad and as a future professional to never give up on the career I want to pursue no matter how many obstacles I face.I also learned some communication skills conducting the interview and that can benefit me for this course. Interviewing Dr. Martinez made me realize that if you really want something to be possible, you have to be prepared for all the obstacles that you will face and that nothing comes easy.

NOW WHAT: Now that I have some knowledge about gender diversity in the medical field, I can make a change in the community by raising awareness regarding gender diversity in health care settings. With this knowledge, I will also be more aware about my surroundings and study hard to get me through these years in the university. I will now know what to expect once I enter the medical field and will be prepared for whatever comes.

#Week10  Abstract, Cover Page & References

Don’t fully understand where, why, and how to create a Cover Page, Abstract, and References? 

Don’t worry and read my post! Not only will this help you guys but it will also help me truly understand these requirements! 

LET’S START! 

First I went into blackboard, then I went to the weekly content folder in which I later clicked on the link, “ Literature Review Supplement Guidelines.” 

Knowing what my subject was and what I had to cover in this post, I looked to see where the Cover Page, Abstracts and references’ requirements were.

This information was pretty helpful but wasn’t very detailed… so I went ahead and checked in my RWS book I found the specific information I needed in page 230. I found the Title page, also known as the Cover Page. Yet still it wasn’t very specific on how it was supposed to look. The abstract information was very straight forward and very detailed! 

There wasn’t any information about how the reference page and what the appropriate references to choose when writing this paper.. so I had to go into the web to find specific instructions.

#PreparingForMyInterview

In order to prepare for an interview, the first step that I needed to take was to send my number one chosen scholar an email to request an interview so I went on to do so. 

After completing this step, my next step was to download and save the interview release form so on I went and I saved it to dropbox as well. 

From here I went ahead and condensed my research questions and interview questions onto a word document that would be suitable to send my chosen scholar. 

The next step in my interview checklist said to read and download the Interview Confirmation and to upload it to my dropbox as well. 

After this, my next step would be to document my recording materials. 

Thankfully my scholar replied the same day so we were able to agree on a form of the interview. Unfortunately, she is out of town until after this assignment is due so we settled on an interview via email, therefore I will only need my laptop to document this interview. 

My nerves have been settled now that I have had contact with my scholar!

Documenting my interview preparation!

I will begin documenting my interview preparation so I can be ready to go for when I interview my first chosen scholar!

I began by writing out the email that I will be sending to Professor Garza.

I then continued to save the Interview Release Form in dropbox! 

I also saved the Interview Confirmation to dropbox.

After saving the documents, I went over the questions and quotes I would be asking the professor. I realized I had to make some corrections in order for this interview to be successful!

I then gathered the materials I would be using to interview the scholar.

Starting off with section 1:

My major is Psychology and that would belong to the College of Liberal Arts and it would also fall under the Department of Psychology. When it comes to advising, the Academic Advising Center is the place to go. In the below picture are the college and the contact information.

When it came time to find the three scholars that research and study what interests myself in the field of psychology, I had a hard time navigating the website at first. 

However, after a bit of clicking around, I was able to pinpoint where to find the psychology faculty! 

From there, I went through each of the listed names and read each of the professor’s biographies in order to get a sense of if they were or were not the right fit for me and this assignment.

Starting off with the first professor I found: 

My reason for choosing Professor Lloyd was fueled by a couple of reasons. For one, his interest of research pertains to the legal aspect of psychology, which is what I happen to be interested in. Also, I had him as my professor for my Introduction to Psychology class my first semester of college and I thoroughly enjoyed his class because of his knowledge and because he tied in bits and pieces of his work, making it that much more interesting to learn about. I just had to include him as one of my top three scholars!

The second scholar I happened to stumble upon is Dr.Louden.

My reason for choosing Dr. Louden is once again because she has an interest in the legal side of psychology and her research shows that. More in depth, her interest is in criminal justice and mental health or offenders with mental disorders which is another area I am quite interested in. I think she was a great match for me just based off of these terms. 

So far the search seemed to be going really well and I was on my way to finding my third and final scholar.

Last, but certainly not least, is Dr.Wood. My reason for choosing Professor Wood falls under the category as the previous two professors; forensics. However, his field of work is just a tad different in the fact that he deals with forensics in relation children. This isn’t exactly what I thought I would be interested in but I did think that his work could give me some insight on some insight on another field I could find interest in. 

Overall, this process was easier and not as stressful to me as I thought it may be and I learned quite a bit in the process!

Hello Jnais! I’d love to mention that I loved all the gifs you used in your tumblr post! It’s pretty awesome that you are a psychology major! Good job in presenting your academic network, it was pretty clear and easy to follow. I think its great how you chose a professor you already had class with because you have insight of how he gets his work done. Would be nice if I chose a professor I already had a class with but the time will soon come, I know it.  Good thing we can both agree that this assignment wasn’t as stressful.
