Pretty convenient that a lot of American students never learn that Einstein was a Jew who came to America and started the nuclear research after fleeing from the Nazis and having most of his research lost in the book burnings. 

Or how much of his life and work was shaped by his autism, like how it was his biggest asset because it allowed him to think differently, but also his biggest hurtle because of all the abuse he received in school from teachers who labeled him as a dunce and told him he was stupid because of his disability. Which he proved wrong by discovering the theory of relativity because of his autism instead of in spite of it.

Its almost like we have a biased school system that censors the accomplishments of marginalized groups to stop them from realizing that people like them have accomplished things.

JSTOR Makes Database Accessible to the Public

“Online academic resource JSTOR has announced it is making its database accessible to the public, amid the widespread closure of universities across the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The database, frequently used by university students for research and essay work, announced on Twitter today that it has made over 6,000 ebooks and over 150 journals accessible without the need for an online login.

Previously, students needed a university login to access these resources.

This is the first time that the database has been openly accessible to non-subscribers.

The database is also working to expand on the amount of free content available online to students accessing the database through their subscribed universities.

In a statement on its website, JSTOR said that it has “an expanded set of content that is available to institutions where students have been displaced due to COVID-19 through June 30, 2020”.

“We are working with publishers to make more than 20,000 books available at no charge for JSTOR participating academic institutions and secondary schools that do not participate in our books program”, the statement said. “The number of books available through this effort is growing daily as more publishers opt in.”

Universities that previously only had access to some areas of JSTOR will also have unlimited access to the complete archives, at no extra cost.”

You know, the thing that really aggravates me about Joe Biden’s shitty stance on universal health care is the fact that when one of his sons, who died from brain cancer, was sick and undergoing treatment, and it was starting to look like he might not be able to work as a result and would therefore have had no income to support himself and his family or proper health insurance to cover the costs of his treatment, Joe Biden planned to sell his second home to help his son’s family pay for the treatment and keep them afloat. It was the Obamas who convinced him not to do it and told him that they’d help him to cover whatever the costs were if it ever came down to it. 

Joe Biden was the goddamned Vice President of the United States of America. He literally owns more than one home. His son was working as the attorney general in Delaware. And even they came to a point where they were struggling to figure out how they would be able to pay for all this without bankrupting themselves in the process. His son couldn’t even quit his job even though he had fucking brain cancer because his family needed the money, even though his illness was starting to affect his ability to work in the first place.

And Joe Biden is the same stupid fucker who thinks universal health care is a pie in the sky fever dream that most Americans don’t deserve because protecting the assets of health insurance companies is far more important for him and the Democratic establishment than anything else.

Prediction for other Americans: In a year or two when COVID-19 is winding down either just due to burnout or a vaccine there will emerge a narrative that it was tragic, and sad, but unavoidable, and people did what they could in the face of overwhelming odds.

This will be false.

The US has been far, far too slow in responding. Contrast our response with South Korea's, with their aggressive testing, containment, and mitigation. Notice how slow we have been in implementing measures that can slow the virus's spread. Notice how lack of insurance, paid time off, and a robust safety bet will speed the virus's spread. Notice the lack of testing, and the spread of misinformation. This was, perhaps, not something that can be prevented, but it is absolutely something that can be mitigated, and our leaders and our country failed and continue to fail to take actions that can mitigate it.
