thinking about how Mew Mew Kissy Cutie in Undertale/Deltarune's universe is a copyrighted anime property. we've never met the "real" Mew Mew because there isn't one. she's a branded fictional character from an in-universe anime. both Mad Mew Mew from Undertale and Pink from Deltarune are NOT Mew Mew, they are at best abstractions or imitations of Mew Mew as interpreted by Maddie/Pink. even the darkner that spawns from Pink's body is not *actually* Mew Mew, it's just the flower shop dark world's interpretation of how a Mew Mew doll would act once given consciousness. I feel like it connects to Deltarune's deeper themes of narratives deriving from other narratives. Deltarune the game IS the legend IS Lord of the Hammer IS Dragon Blazers, and meanwhile they're all very different. A copy of a copy of a copy of a copy. Pink both IS and IS NOT Mew Mew. Mew Mew doesn't technically exist within Deltarune's world, we only vaguely know about the "real" Mew Mew as an in-universe character because these derivatives of her exist. we never watch Mew Mew Kissy Cutie, we just hear Alphys talk about it. a story told about a story we never get to see. every retelling slightly different. play with me in this space.

got to watch this, after reading the JOJOLands ...

three things:

taking lava rocks is illegal, and tourists did that a lot (don't you dare try it just because you read jojo)

there are ongoing issues of land grabbing (by billionaires, too), unaffordable housing prices, rising food costs, and water redirected to serve luxury resorts or for tourists instead of Hawaiians

there's environmental degradation (even water contamination) from military activities [remember, last chapter, Meryl Mei mentioned that the enemy who wants to find the lava rock is probably part of or affiliated with the marines 👀]

well, at around minute twenty-three, John said that, "yeah it's absurd" how a Native Hawaiian has been waiting for 19 years to get a chance for homesteads (lands set aside for the Natives) ... and yeah, the many personal injustices that the characters in JOJOLands faced mirrored the systemic injustices that befallen Native Hawaiians and other local residents, the high level of injustices and the low level of people's awareness/care for these are absurd.

i hope Araki-sensei talked with some Native Hawaiians, but it seemed like he had done quite some research to an extent. there's also a history of Japanese and Hawaiians that i'm not sure if the story will go deeper into.

i wonder whether there are Native Hawaiians who are reading JOJOLands, and really want to know your thoughts about the story being written.

i think manga will never be an activist piece, but just like any other media, it has the potential to let us talk about real issues. at best, it can properly inform; at the very least, it can raise awareness that there's an issue; at worst, it can misdirect people. hopefully it won't come to the worst scenario.
