One time, when we were kids, my friend and I were playing the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, and I was whooping his ass, and he had accepted that he was going to lose, but decided to go out with a bang, so right before he drew, he shouted “I put my faith in the heart of the cards!” and wound up drawing the one card in his deck that would completely derail my strategy and he actually won that duel and that’s why I don’t laugh at these things anymore.
Not quite a narcissist
So recently there’s been a wonderful personality chart circling around that states the personalities of the YGO characters. And while the chart is very interesting and useful, there’s been one thing we’ve found out that’s both surprising and confusing; out of all the characters, Ryou Bakura was ranked as having the highest level of narcissism, with altruism being the opposing trait.
Now what’s interesting about this is that he’s also ranked as being the most unselfish. Which makes no sense, seeing as “ showing a disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others; unselfish.” So how on earth can Ryou be “narcissistic” (which is completely the wrong term mind you) and be unselfish?
Ryou Bakura isn’t narcissistic; what he is, is self serving. He does things that benefits himself above anyone else, and sometimes these things can put others into a dangerous position. Such as Ryou keeping the Ring regardless of Yami Bakura’s presence in it, out of a sense of wanting to keep Bakura around so he wouldn’t be alone. Ryou isn’t however self preserving - he has absolutely no self preserverence and at the end of the day will sacrifice himself if it means to stop Bakura from harming his friends. This strikes a fairly odd balance, seeing as Ryou ends up being self serving up until a certain point. Ryou has his own motives for following along with the others, driven more by his desire to learn the origins of the items rather than the sense of serving the greater good. Being a hero is not in Ryou’s interest nor is Ryou interested in it. He wants to get something out of it, and he is willing to do underhanded things if they serve his purpose. But he isn’t outwardly selfish. All of this self serving Ryou does is completely internalized, dealing with Bakura and with his own motives, rather than being externalized. Externally, he’s polite and courteous and doesn’t want much from people.
This chart also brings up another very good point that I have been touching upon throughout this analysis series: Ryou and Bakura are extremely alike. They share a similar sense of being self-serving (narcissistic as it’s poorly put) and having lofty ideals/not really being there all the time. The only difference is that while Ryou is “selfless” or rather, without self preservation, Bakura is greedy, and he will tear down the world to get what he wants.
So essentially I want to make it a point that in the Bakurae being labeled “narcissistic” it’s not really the narcissism that’s self involved and vain like we are led to think of it being. It’s an internalized form of self serving that could be considered a survivalist mindset. They work for themselves and for themselves only. That’s what it means by narcissism.

Down a Rabbit Hole I Went
I screwed up. I didn't think that using an ancient language on a piece of tumblr merch was necessary but I forgot what site I was on :) . This is tumblr, of course it has to be in linguistically accurate cuneiform. I went and hired an expert on Ancient Semitic Languages and Cultures. There aren't as many as you'd think that are willing to translate text for an internet gag so I'm so happy I found Paul.
Notes on the translation from the translator:
I used the ventive suffix on the imperative "give (rib+am)" which is a special feature of Akkadian that indicates the motion of direction. It makes it a little bit more authentic. The longer version actually includes the words "to me (ana iasim)", but a typical Akkadian speaker probably wouldn't have needed to say that.
Also, for the word "money" I used the Sumerian (KUG.BABBAR) instead of spelling out the Akkadian, because that was a common feature in Akkadian scribal writing. For the font I was happily surprised that Google has a Cuneiform font, so not only is it correct but it looks pretty neat too. Right now you can buy both versions in the shop but cuneiform version won't ship for a week or so as I have to order new stock with the new design.

HOW IS THIS NOT GAY
Reblogging because these two are gay as fuck for each other in this anime.
Look at the babies crying and holding hands, and telling each other they want to be with together forever.
“Puzzleshipping is not canon”
Me: *immediately pulls up this scene* Any questions?
Ooooh man it hits so different from the manga.
This is gay af, won’t deny it.
But there something about Yami being straight up confident saying it that annoys me. (sure I should watch a video to hear his voice, it could be different)
In the manga he looks as shy as Yugi, almost like he doesn’t want to confess it and Yugi crying in the next page is AAAAAAAAA so fucking adorable.
Of course Toei’s take on Yami is completely different from the manga and I should take them separately, but I’ll always love more the manga.

Everyone has their own tastes and for their own reasons of course.
A lot of fandom wants and enjoys snuggly huggy Seto and Mokuba content.
Meanwhile I want depressed and withdrawn Seto and Mokuba is aware of Seto’s state but neither of them knows how to fix this. Give me. WANT.
In this vein, I personally really like these panels. Mokuba just being quietly tired.
