Project 5: Jose and Nancy
Performance Piece
“Mr. Eric’s Cannabis Street”
The concept I wanted to explore was bringing part of one’s private life into the public. What better way than this? The format is meant to parody both Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. The juxtaposition tickled me.
Great Performance Art! I enjoyed the fact you made your audience laugh!!
This is the coolest thing I've seen all day! it’s brilliant and just amazing!
Artist Statement #5
For this project, my sister and I wanted to do something completely unique and unordinary at the same time and just see what would happen. Our idea was basic and simple, but also feel like it really mirrors Marina’s concept of performance art. Originally, we wanted to use different types of paint and throw it all over each other’s body, but it was hard to figure out where we would do it because of the mess. So we decided to use what had at home and use only our faces instead of our whole body. Overall, Nancy and I are both happy with how it turned out because we both did something we had never done before and it was a great way to show how simple performance art could be.

Reading and Response #5
The reason many people find Marina’s art to be very weird and often times scary, is because of how different and unique it is. Marina completely redefined the world of art with her unique ideas with performance art and took a great risk because a lot of critics had a problem with what she was doing and almost didn’t consider it to be art. It was that negativity that pushed Marina even more that eventually led to her big success and becoming more well known around the world. Performance art has been around us for so long and many of us don’t even know that it’s there. The article and the movie about Marina and her great success in performance art, truly opened my eyes to now see what performance art is really like and how easy it is to appreciate it.
Project #4: Video Art
For this project, I wanted to incorporate something that I have been doing as a child. I was taught to build the Rubik's cube since I was very little and that it was also my way of adding color to this project. Creating videos is something I don't have much experience in, so it was a bit of a challenge even with something as simple as recording myself building the Rubik’s cube. Picking this song in particular just felt like the right song for a video like this. I’m happy with the way it came out, but I also feel like it may just be too simple to others who have more experience with videography.
Reading and Response #4
Projection: Vanishing and Becoming
This reading was definitely challenging to interpret, but very interesting as far as understanding the first forms of real life art. Natural lighting and shadows have always been present, thus becoming the first medium. What I really liked about this reading was the reference it made to Plato and the Allegory of the Cave and how the shadows and different projections were used as a way to create the illusion that there was really something there. These different projections from light and shadows set the base for what came next after that. It’s easy to believe that drawings were the first form of art and I myself fell into that belief, but after reading this article, it made sense that natural light mixed with shadows to create different projections, really was the birth of art.

This drawing is amazing!
My gif series for project three is a selection of moments from a few of the official Blizzard Overwatch animated cinematics. I chose to approach the ‘gif’ aspect as a moving picture, much like it is, and chose, in many to keep the figure still while elements in the environment continued to move. For the few that break from this trend (ie, Robo-birb and No! No! No!) I chose simply to mirror the animation and reverse the “still subject, dynamic background” focus. I chose the edit the scenes I did based on the feel, the intrigue, and the symbolism of the moments. To fully understand each of the more meaningful gifs one must be familiar with the animations themselves (Overwatch Animations:Rise and Shine, Hero, Dragons, The Last Bastion, and Recall). While wonderful works on their own, the animations don’t really lend themselves well to being ‘pictures’ and thusly, with a small touch of editing some of the more iconic scenes and feelings could be captured and witnessed in a more digestible form. The beauty of some of the more minimal gifs is in their subtlety: by making an almost completely still ‘picture’ a sort of moment can be captured, but by having an element of animation, an element of life, present in the piece the picture is transformed and thusly the medium that is gif is vindicated.
