MAKE AND REMAKE PROCESS:

I think that the make and remake project has been difficult in the sense that working in groups can already be difficult as is, so when you’re trying to create a typeface. I think that the hardest part to this project is making sure all of the letters look as if they are the same styles, and that can be difficult to do when working amongst 5 people all together. We are supposed to gather together on Sunday to finalize the letter designs and Vector them for final submission. Overall I think this was project was very cool to create our own lettering.

Course Reflection

For the class reflection I want to say that I have enjoyed being able to create things in this class and work alongside wonderful individuals in this class as well. I think that I learned a lot about typography and a lot more about using a grid and working with layouts and spreads. Going into this class I was a bit nervous because I didn’t take ARTS 245 before, and I was worried I would be behind in the content, but I seemed to fit right in seamlessly. I am super excited to take ARTS 245 next semester to compare the content and hopefully create even more.

Typographic Design Process

I think that the design process is different for each individual and I find it interesting to see how people used different programs and create something so beautiful! I think that it’s important for people to understand just how different each creative process is for each individual. I think that through college I have learned from professors who encourage me to have creative freedom and I definitely have had some professors who push their creative design process onto us as their students and then it becomes very difficult to find pleasure in that course if you’re not able to find yourself in it some sort of way. Overall I think that the design process of not just design but in this case majority of this semester is typographic design and I think seeing different classmates create different things with their type has taught me a lot about the design process.

Works in Progress

This week I have decided to take another approach to the process journal. I decided to keep a few things that I had before but after a while I decided that a new color scheme and a new illustration page that felt more like me is what I needed. After making a color scheme of black white and a sage green color I then made a simple illustration page that then allowed me to use these simple shapes in the rest of my spread making it look more unified. I have had a slow start to this project just because I’m trying to turn in other works in progress for other classes but I hope to get back on track!

Charette Exhibition

I think that participating in the Charrette for my school was a great opportunity to expand my works and actually speak on a topic that is personal to me. I chose to create my project on “Being biracial or multi-racial in a racial polarizing society”. With this I wanted to highlight that being biracial in this time has cause a lot of self-esteem issues with biracial and multi-racial individuals. I chose to speak on racial imposter syndrome. As a biracial woman of white and black I have felt this before. Not feeling like I fit with either of my races simply by the fact I wasn’t “fully” one race. I wanted to create an awareness conceptual poster that allowed others who may be victim of the same circumstances that they are not alone. I chose to use neutral colors and a bold typeface with an illustration. Nothing to crazy but also getting the point across.

Works in Progress for this week

This week has been a lot for me since this semester is coming to an end. I think that the process for our final process journals can be a bit frustrating due to the fact that the creation process is unique, but this is the joy of college, trying to complete tasks through someone else process and being able to complete the assignment anyways. I think that the process journal I create will have to be modified several times to try to adjust to my creation process. I know I will be able to complete something wonderful to showcase my work from this course and hopefully create a beginning portfolio. I just have to push through the many assignments expected of me for this class while also trying to maintain my other courses.

Chapter 11: Typographic Design Education

I think that this week’s reading could be a lot of help when working on our alphabet in our make and remake groups. I think that there is so much information packed into single letterforms of different typefaces that is not often looked into by someone not into design. But as someone who wants to pursue a career in design work, I think that it’s very important to appreciate different letterforms and how they are portrayed in different work. I think that a lot of the examples in this chapter were very interesting to look at. And I think that I will be using this when constructing my letters for my group members.

Works in Progress

This week was the week we presented out final Zines to the class. I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment! I think that it was fun in the sense we pretty much had free reign as far as which topic we discussed. I chose to do “Understanding Cats”, a zine about understanding cat body language. I enjoyed speaking on this subject due to personal connection of being a cat parent of two. I also enjoyed finding illustrations for the zine and tweaking them to make them look and feel the same. Overall, I was happy with what I came up with.

Case Studies in typographic Design

I liked this reading! I can relate to some of the things discussed in this reading. I think even with many things we were assigned for this course, I had to figure out how to piece various traits to my typography to create a story. I think that it’s not something that can be done easily I think it’s something you have to practice getting better at. But I think that being introduced to these techniques later in my undergrad career made me feel as if I was behind but all-in-all it genially is a skill you must acquire over time.

Taeyoon Choi: Strategies for Embracing Our Contradictions

I think that this talk was beautiful in the sense of viewing ALL parts of life and ALL parts of once self’s should be praised. I agree with this because I find that in today’s society, we struggle with no embracing our flaws and only embracing the “good” points in us or in life. I think that finding beauty in all parts of life and in once self is not only good practice but true. I also feel that this is another thought process that has led to a lot of mental health issues in society because we are not embracing who we are as a whole instead of parts of us.

Process for this week

This week was a bit interesting given we were fresh off of spring break. However, I did get a lot accomplished for this project. I ended up creating (in my opinion) one of the cutest projects I have ever done. and I’m not saying that just because its main topic is cats.) I created a simple layout on InDesign and incorporate the PNG images I created in procreate. I think that my process for creating things needs to start with a mood board because I used a mood board when conceptualizing this Zine projects and I think that it really has helped me a lot as far as color theme and images that fit well together.

Works in Progress - Zine (3/4/22)

This week we began to focus on more of the layout for our Zines, and as I began trying to think about my layout of my zine, I then realized I need to have the content that I want before I can think of the layout (that’s just how my brain works). Therefore, I began to work on the cute little cat images and the essay behind my zine. With this being said I used various images to create these cute little cat pngs and I also have written a ½ pages that we are supposed to write for this assignment. I really am excited to see what I come up with for this zine because I really enjoy doing conceptual content for viewers and putting things onto a layout to make them more visual pleasing. I hope that over spring break I will have some time to continue my work.

Reading Response: Typography in Time and Motion (chapter 9)

This reading was very cool and very interesting at the same time. I think that as a designer in learning the ability to create a voice or motion for the text that I use is a huge skill to have. I think that this is a genius tool and ability to be able to do as a designer. One of the examples from the reading that I found the most interesting was an image of the words ‘TEETH’ in a 3-dimensional view that incorporated the image of floss in between the ‘H’. I thought that this was a very smart way to bring the concept behind what the designer is trying to call to action, and in this case, we have floss flossing the teeth text. I just like the fact that designers have thought of this to begin with, I always enjoy seeing things and I never would have thought of until seeing it.

Works in progress : 2/25/22

This week we had a new project introduced and I am really excited about it. We get the choice to pick from a few numbers of categories (but we are able to choose something more broad inside of these categories). I chose cats to be my topic. I want to create a zine giving the reader the information on the behavior of their cats. Being a college student, I think that having a pet cat has thoroughly helped my mental health. I also am thankful that cats are very low maintenance so it became very easy for me to take care of them. So, I think that giving my readers the information on how to care for their cats or maybe be interesting in getting at cat when they are in college I want to be a source of good information.

Reading Response: Typography on Screen

I think that being effective in knowing which typeface to use in which environment is very important when learning to become a graphic designer. I have definitely learned that there is a time and place to use different typefaces. I think that over the few semesters of me studying in the graphic design field I am confident that I am progressing with what I know. I find myself looking at different advertisements and different forms of media using typography and just analyze and thing about why the artist chose to use that typeface. Sometimes I am inspired to incorporate things into my work. I can’t wait to see how my skills have improved as I continue in this field.

Works in Progress 02/17/22:

This week was interesting in the sense of being able to get where I am now from where I was. I think that the critiques in class have helped me a lot to seeing new things and being able to look at other works and be able to find different techniques that I like and mix them into my work. I think the most changes that I made to my posters was the informational poster. I decided to be similar for my conceptual and informational but then later realized they look TOO similar so I’m going to edit my informational poster to be more complex and use a lot more Type in my informational that shows off the elegance of the typeface that I chose which is Raleway. I hope I’m able to generate some good ideas as to where to start, my classmates have already given me some just have to put the work to the poster!

Reading Response: The Typographic Message

I found it really cool how in this chapter the examples shown to represent symbols and the use of semiotics through typography is just flat out amazing. I like how a word to describe “Families” can be edited through type height and make the “I’s” appear to look like a small family. I like the play typography to be a sign for either that particular word or representing something else. I think that using type as a language through designing things like logos is very beneficial because it’s like an Easter egg for the viewer to find. For example, the ben and Jerrys logo are a “BR”, but the coloring of the type makes the BR look as if there is a “31” inside of the type. This is because ben and Jerry’s are known to have 31 flavors of ice cream. The play on color and the type itself allows for a really nice play with semiotics.
