It is a known fact that Android and iOS use very different design systems and guidelines. In this post, i will try to analyse 5 and explain them to the best of my understanding.
Google uses Material Design, iOS uses Human Interface Design:
Google and iOS use their own list of icons and buttons that are especailly reserved to them and their apps. This happens because they are big companies and have an insurmountable amount of resources.
Differences in navigation patterns:
The difference in navigation is also a big difference between the operationg systems. On iOS for example, the swiping action will make you go back on the screen and change screens, however, on Android the swiping action is used for navigating tabs, while the “back” button is added to the bottom of the screen an remains afixed there throughout.(as shown below)
Button styles in iOS and Android:
In this case, both system use 2 styles of buttons, however they follow the same rules. There are raised buttons and standard ones, while these are the most common, raised buttons are mostly used for calling the user’s attention to a certain element, so if you ever need a button to be highlighted from the rest... RAISE IT.
I believe font differences is a given, two different competitors as big as Android and iOS have their own fonts that the use and abuse in their systems. This goes to show that big systems are very cautious about how they organize their text, and how they use it for their design patterns.
