I would like to recommend TV Century 21 to anyone who wants to get into old British Comics.

Yes technically most of the stories are based of TV Shows but other than a single movie and one episode you don’t need to watch any of them, and in fact it improves of them in a lot of ways. Some of the strips are worth skipping (basically any of those using the TVC21 Time Machine to observer them as they are just filler, the exception is the Agent 21 strip. I would also recommend skipping Capture or Kill as it’s rubbish) but the rest are amazing. It creates a shared universe in the 2060’s with exceptional world building showcasing the history of the future. Principally via strips based of Gerry Anderson shows and the Daleks. Unlike the shows it’s based on it actually takes a deep interesting the world and backstories of the characters. Of course it being made the 60’s does lead to it being dated in places.

But if you are unfamiliar with the shows you should still give the magazine a look as it is exceptional and actual gives a backstory to many of the characters and organisations which the show does not. The only two things that are really needed for a full understanding is the movie ‘Thunderbirds and Go’ (not the animated series of the same name) as that sets up one of the strips, and the first episode of Captain Scarlet as that explains how Captain Scarlet got his powers. The place to read watch is is clear based on the marketing material inside the comic. The only other one I would suggest watching is the only one to watch before the you start the comic and that’s the first episode of Stingray as that explains who the various factions in that strip are and how they interact.

But either way if you want to read old British sci fi comics give TVC 21 a look.

I cannot see what Meggan sees in ol’ Brian. Okay yes he is very attractive. But I feel his a bit to muscle bound by this point.

He probably votes Conservative (and as this is the 80’s he’s voting for old Maggie Thatcher), he is De Facto Squire of Braddock manor in the absence of his Brother or Sister, he is racist and objectifies her, he want her to be their for him as some kind of trophy.

Being raised on a diet of Doctor Who and Fireball XL5 has not prepared Me…. Wait. Fireball XL5. That’s what she sees in him!!! it makes sense. He even looks like him.

She sees Brian Braddock as the Steve Zodiac to her Doctor Venus!!! of course unless you’ve read the tie in comics in TVC21 Magazine Zodiac and Venus had a rather unhealthy relationship. Zodiac was jerk and significantly older as well as a far higher rank in the World Space Patrol than her. It’s all clear now. She’s thinks that’s how relationships should be! Oh Steve Zodiac when I get you!!!!!!! Actually for that matter, British TV in the 60’s and 70’s when I get you!!!!

I think I know I will be crying Poor Meggan from now on.

Her power is really not helping her at all. She needs someone who respects to help her understand it and the way it works and effects her emotions. And Brian Braddock is not the man to do it. In fact he is probably one of the worst men for this job.

I don’t know who’s right but it seems Nightcrawler is trying ti have her best interests at heart however I will have to wait and see. I suspect the ideal aid would be some kind of impartial unemotional observer kind of entity.

Okay that’s Inferno Wrapped up.

Here’s my review in brief.

Unlike the prior crossover arcs this felt like a complete story, which is a good. It also kept me engaged right up to the final issue.

Likewise I enjoyed it all with one exception.

The final issue.

X-Factor 39.

In one issue it takes all the agency out of Scott and Maddie’s life and and a seems to just exist so Scott doesn’t have to hate himself for everything he’s done to Maddie and the people around him. It seems to exist just so they can say “oh Scott’s actually a good eveything morally grey and dubious he’s ever done is actually all down to Mister Sinister messing with his Brian as a kid.” And frankly I can’t imagine a more boring plot twist right at the end of an X-Men story that’s the first grip me to this extent since some of the classic New Mutant works, Dark Phoenix and the Crooked World Saga over in Captain Britain. Frankly if Inferno was one issue shorter if X-Factor #39 didn’t exist I could pass most of its flaws not to mention if it didn’t exist it would give more opportunity for everyone to angst a lot and damage everyone’s relationships with each other.

I am happy Beast is back being Blue and Furry again which happened right at the start. I feel like Warren is finally coming into his own for the first time since he was created. Iceman is still relatively nothing character who it’s clear the author is struggling to find a role for now he’s no longer the youngest member of the team. Jean’s I’m not sure what’s going on with Jean I feel they are setting something up with her but she had a nice reunion with Storm as well as a very… well intimate encounter with Psylock. Logan is still dull as always and they finally did something mildly interesting with Alex.

I’m a bit worried about Magik as she gone back to being a 9 year old when I read this I assumed it would be brief say 30 issues at most? But judging by what @daughterofheartshaven has said it’s going to hang around for a lot longer than that? Which seems a very strange decision as after Dani Magik was the most compelling of the New Mutants.

Speaking Dani I feel she’s been a bit to out of focus recently I feel the author has kind of lost track of what she wants to do with her which is really really disappointing and hope this gets resolved soon with Dani back in the limelight.

With the X-Men I have to say I really like Betsy new costume and I dislike that they are setting up conflict between Dazzler and Rogue over Longshot which feels forced as they had just made up about them trying to kill each other and where offering to dance with each other. I don’t have much more to say.

My thoughts of Maddie becoming the Goblyn Queen have already been described and can be best summed up as “poor Maddie” but Scott really did drive her to suicide didn’t he? Murder Suicide yes but suicide nonetheless. I will greatly miss her presence in these tales.

I do not like how Lorna has been treated at all. This is the second time she’s been possessed and she’s only been in two arcs significantly and in both of them she’s spent the majority of the possessed! I have ranted about this elsewhere however.

In enjoyed the X-Terminator’s mini but beyond that I have little to say. It seems they are setting them to join the New Mutants? Or at the least hang around with them for a while? I’m not sure?

Regrading the Excalibur crossover I would have liked Rachel to play a bigger role. I love her she’s amazing and I was hoping for her to reunite with her family properly. It was however nice seeing the Doctor Who references. And I want Meggan to have a full scale therapy session. I felt like in many ways it was a kind of synthesis of the whole Inferno Arc with Meggan as a Maddie stand in and Brian as a Scott. Except Brian doesn’t get to wash his hands of the guilt, as Nightcrawler reminds us, and Meggan is able to come back from being the being the Goblyn Princess. It felt like the got caught in some kind of mirror, meta tale it’s hard to describe. But it with the cinema motif and Meggan chameleoning Maddie due to her powers being beyond her control it felt like they were in a kind of story book version of Inferno. No not quite but… I don’t know. Well I do but I’m not good enough with words and writing to explain.

But overall I did enjoy it with the exception of X-Factor #39. Which I feel almost ruins the whole thing.

So Scott leaving Maddie was all Mister Sinister’s Fault? How do you make that conclusion Angel? When did Sinister do anything to Scott at that point to make him leave? He had nothing to do with Jean’s resurrection! In fact he didn’t even consider Jean coming back to life in his plans?

@daughterofheartshaven they don’t even wait two issues after her Death to start washing Scott of his sins. You were right. This makes it significantly more boring. You were so right. I should have waited to finish that final issue.

The finally issue of Inferno and it shoots itself in the foot they have a compelling in tragic conclusion with Maddie’s death then they have to tack this final issue on at the end and mess it all up.

Scott drove Maddie to Suicide and now they are trying to convince us he had no part in it? He all but killed her.

I don’t however like how Lorna has been treated since Giant Sized X-Men. She’s be paired off with Havok and written out repeatedly and when she does show back up she’s always getting mind controlled and turned evil.

I want her to be allowed to be her own character.

I can’t believe the 60’s did her better than the 70’s and 80’s.

When she was first introduced I was like “whoah she’s awesome I can’t wait to see more of her!” And then the 60’s run ends almost immediately and I don’t get to see her until she’s kidnapped during Secret Empire by a character I must assume is President Nixon! I assume she will be given a more prominent role after Giant Sized but no. Written out with the rest of the OG’s (this is fair they wanted to play around with the New Characters but Lorna was practically a new Character even if she had existed for five years she hadn’t be given a starring role since her first story) and then she gets mind controlled and written out. After that she is a minor supporting character in the Arcade arc and then she vanishes again until oh no guess what’s he’s been mind controlled again!!!!

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT ALEX SUMMERS ANGSTING OVER IS MIND CONTROLLED GIRLFRIEND!!

His introductory arc was dull and involved White Pharaoh!! It was bland dull and boring! Worst arc of the mostly decant tail end of 60’s X-Men. And then he just exists being dull next to has way cooler girlfriend but for some reason the writers want us to think that Alex is what more interesting than Lorna who is by far the more compelling character with a design a million times better.

Alex was only half ( and even then barely) interesting after Maddie ripped up his costume and made him Goblin Prince. And even then he was only mildly interesting when compared to every single other character!

Stop having Lorna be posses let her have some agency and take the lead in a plot for the first time since 1969!!!! It almost the end of the 80’s and of all the 60’s X-Men (sans Changeling) she’s the only one who hasn’t be given an actual arc focusing in her as an individual!!!!!

I ma tired of the goddam Malice Arc!!!

I was expected her to end up as a recurring antagonist like almost every other major villain at this point? But no they just kill her off and leave her dead for several decades?!!

Whilst I’m yet to finish the final issue I have actually enjoyed Inferno as a Standalone story. It does however fill me with dread regarding the aftermath with the how you’ve described the handling of the fact, I am very nervous.

Of the crossover events so far this is the only one that hasn’t left me feeling underwhelmed. With Mutant Massacre and Fall of the Mutants I felt like nothing was really concluded or resolved. In both cases stuff just happened. Secret Wars has lots of random out of character moments for Magneto involving Wasp and the whole thing was just rather… odd and toyerrrifc. And Secret Wars II beyond the stuff with the New Mutants was just plain dull.

Inferno is the first which felt like a complete story that was also engaging.

The biggest problem I do have with it is having Maddie try to kill some babies which just seems like the most ham fisted way of saying look how evil she is now. What’s next making her kick puppies? Thats bit seemed to over blown. I could see Maddie plotting the biggest Murder Suicide of all time to need the world but I struggled to see her using the baby murder ritual sacrifice spell to do it.

However what you have said about what comes after does definitely make me worry.
