Canyon Diablo

Imagine, if you will, navigating the terrestrial surface of some nearby planet and you stumble upon an enormous crater left by a violent meteor crash that occured at some point in the distant past. You gaze at the majesty and the scale of the impact site, and soon realize the true importance of the deep structure and life's ability to defend itself from such an event. You raise your camera hoping to capture on film the magnitude of the scene laid out before you, but immediately stop and curse yourself, "Damn! Only brought a nifty-fifty with!"

The Macaw

A macaw’s beak is something to respect. Capable of producing 500+ psi of raw crushing power, the Macaw can often be seen ripping through Brazil nuts and weak metal cages.

If one of these beautiful creatures were, for some reason, standing on a shoulder and the beak was disrespected, the bird would instinctively lash out and bite, snipping off an ear lobe or severing a lower lip.

Build Nice or Build Twice

The Aon Center towers over One Prudential Plaza in the downtown Chicago loop.  When the Aon Center was finished in 1974 it was the tallest building in Chicago at 83 floors.  The dignified building uses its vertical stripping to add visual height to the Chicagoland skyline and features inspiring views in all directions.  However, soon after construction completed, the marble facade began crumbling off requiring an entire replacement of white granite at a price of $60 million, half the cost of the original building construction.

I Heart Your Musk

Musk is a class of aromatic substances commonly used as base notes in perfumery. It can include glandular secretions from animals such as the musk deer, numerous plants emitting like fragrances or artificial substances with similar strong odors.  The name originates from the Sanskrit name for testicle.  Dozens of musk colognes can be purchased and applied heavily to one's body, for example, Kiehl's Musk, Muscs Koublaï Khän by Serge Lutens, and Frédéric Malle Musc Ravageur.

The Ice-Borg

He won 5-straight Wimbledons from 1976 to 1980.  With 11 Grand Slam titles, Bjorn Borg walked away from tennis at the age of 25 because he wanted a life.  It was the repetitive training-hotel-match play-airport-training cycle that ultimately effected his motivation to continue.  

To mere mortals, the decision probably seemed absurd. There is a sharp contrast in lifestyle from an elite athlete and his repetitiveness with those daily grinds of blue-collar workers on factory assembly lines living paycheck to paycheck. The lifestyle of expensive hotels, exercising in the sun, world travel, attention, fame, groupies, and the competitive fire is something most would kill for.

Because Size Matters

There are over 120 species of pufferfish, or Tetraodontidae, worldwide.  The poor swimmers are vulnerable to prey and have evolved the ability to gulp down large amounts of water or air to inflate themselves into a virtually inedible ball.  Some have even evolved thorny spikes on their bodies.

For people living on the edge, the fish is a delicacy and properly trained Fugu chefs will serve dishes to those willing to pay hundreds of dollars.  The fish contains bacteria that release a neurotoxin that is 1,200 more toxic than cyanide.  Yet, at low dosages the toxin delivers a sort of 'high' to those consuming the fish.  Even dolphins have been recorded chewing on a pufferfish and passing it around.  They have somehow learned to provoke the fish just the right amount for the chemical to be released to experience that sort of trance-like state, floating there in a daze, wondering what life is all about.
