Two characters that wear a metaphorical mask. One drowns in numbness while the other drowns in sorrow. But the question I included in the title points to a deeper meaning the show has been hinting at. That is: their perspective on each other.
Jax picks on Gangle because she doesn't give him pushback. Allowing him to feel in control since he can't control much of anything else. The quote, "she likes it" is him either misreading her submissive attitude when he enacts the bullying or an insecure reaction to the harm he's actively causing. Trying to save face, if you will. I think it's a combination, but that's just me.
Highlight misreading in your brain, I'll get back to that.
Now, Gangle for her part doesn't go out of her way to harm Jax when she gets the upper hand. Like being Spudsy's manager. She goes a bit too far in micromanagement and the promise of punishment, but this screenshot does make it seem like she felt bad by the end of the adventure. (We don't know what those hands did to Jax, but I doubt it was malicious. Since he recovers fairly quickly and its never brought up again. My headcannon is they tickled him to make him smile, but that's just a Film Theory :)
I find astounding, but perfectly logical, that they don't see the other's mask. Jax was stumped as to why Gangle acted happy all of a sudden. Gangle is terrified of him because she thinks Jax is invincible. Lacking that human vulnerability. They've given up on any sort of actual connection due to these misreadings.
This sweet ribbon girl knows the rabbit bully wants her around. To make himself happy by making her miserable. Her self-confidence and experiences of feeling inadequate are being tied to Jax and that's why she doesn't argue. She's 'helping' him as a determinant to herself.
They're waiting for the shoe to drop. The tension is subtly there. He's egging her on to reveal her inner 'demon'/learn to be numb. Gangle is praying that one day, his humanity will show instead of vanishing. But, like everyone else Jax has tormented away, she has little belief that his sadistic mask, is actually a mask. "That's just who he is".
Pomni and the audience know the truth, but Gangle obviously needs evidence. Jax has been able to push his villainous narrative for far too long.
I would rocket off the walls if Gangle said something like "Y-y-your mask is off," when he can't hide anymore. Burst into the stratosphere if we get a scene where Jax apologizes and begrudgingly attempts to understand that Gangle's depression isn't something that ever permanently leaves. No 'toughing up' fixes it.
My opinion on Jax having a redemption arc and how that relates to Gangle is this: She needs time to process what his character-trope mentality meant. How it affected her for (presumably) years. Forgiveness is a slow process. They may never become full-fledged friends. Gangle may want to cut ties, and that's perfectly okay. I think the most impactful thing for this show to do is to outright confirm that Jax never wanted Gangle to abstract and vice versa. Now they finally understand who the other really is. Not a weakling or a monster. Just broken people.
